Okay, now that we're all loving The Wrestler, I suggest you go out and find Beyond The Mat which is basically a doc version of this.

for me anyways, I wouldn't say I love The Wrestler, and I get your opinion that he is a hard filmmaker to love, I would agree, but it still works despite being 'overcooked'. Gone in the Wrestler are any of the trademark 'hip-hop' montages (I forget what he called them though I know he compared them to sampling in hip-hop) and everything is subdued and you just have a broken man living a broken life, scarcely any score or adventurous camera shots, just point and shoot and have Mickey Rourke at the middle of it, that was his mission. There seems to be a trend of directors famous for their radical approaches to cinematic storytelling trying their hands at the austere (I'm thinking of P. T. Anderson's There Will Be Blood, Soderbergh's Bubble, Lynch's A Straight Story)... The Wrestler is Aronofsky's try at this minimalism.

I haven't disliked any of Aronofsky's movies, but I've found all 3 of them to be overcooked enough that I don't love any of them either. I'm hoping the Wrestler will change that.
