Trailer: War For The Planet of the Apes

War. What is it good for?

The rebooted Planet of the Apes series keeps on chugging, and keeps on empathizing with the Apes, while making the human villains more vile with each chapter. Here we have a genocidal Colonel played by Woody Harrelson with his military apparatus, juxtaposed against Ur-Ape, Caesar (Andy Serkis returning) taking in a human orphan. As always the motion capture animation of the Apes is astounding.

After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in a battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Oh, and writers, please, let us all place a moratorium on “I didn’t start this , but I WILL finish it.” (blech.)

Trailer: Wilson

High on my list of 2017 films is the sad-sack comedy, Wilson is based on Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel of the same name, directed by Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) and starring Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern. The trailer is pretty heavy on the slap-stick kind of humour, where you can either see Harrelson’s character be beat up, or beat people up, but there are a few zingers in there too. The trailer makes the film look a bit more uneven than (hopefully) the finished film will be. Much like Clowes’ Ghost World, it is the longer development of character and ideas about society that make that one a winner.

A lonely, neurotic and hilariously honest middle-aged man reunites with his estranged wife and meets his teenage daughter for the first time.

Wilson opens in the US on March 24th.

Cinecast Episode 463 – This One is Icy (Your Mom Was Right)

Matt Gamble from Where the Long Tail Ends makes his triumphant return to The Cinecast to sing the praises of Tom Ford and Hailee Steinfeld! Andrew and Kurt give Gamble a break for a moment while we head to Manchester by the Sea with Casey Affleck. The Watch List hits some big titles and small. With PT Anderson, Taika Waititi, Steven Spielberg, Paul Verhoeven, George Miller and competitive endurance tickling.

Breaking from tradition a bit, we cease to bring about any shouting matches or deliberate sign-outs (the Skype equivalent of slamming the door) upon Matt’s return, but nevertheless its a spirited conversation and it was fun getting the band back together. Review: Triple 9

“The monster has gone digital,” warns Woody Harrelson in a fashion that only Mr. Harrelson can. As bedraggled detective cleaning up the mess of a bank manager whose vault was just not only breached in a daylight heist, but documents of his families whereabouts are left behind by the thieves as a threat. Triple 9 is a gritty fusion of the dirty cop drama, and the ‘one last job’ thriller. Mostly it feels like the last hurrah of the ensemble heist film. With GPS, closed circuit cameras, and other omnipresent technologies, pulling off a smash-and-grab bank job seems as foolish as grabbing a few strapped stacks on impulse on the way out the door only to find them loaded with dye packs.

John Hillcoat, the hard-boiled Australian behind gritty outback western The Proposition, apocalyptic father-son survival tale The Road, and family bootlegger drama, Lawless, is determined to make his audience wallow in the complex cesspool of crime and law-enforcement of inner city Atlanta. The gangs are bad, at one point a trio of severed heads sit idly on the hood of a classic automobile, but the militarized police force is worse. Hillcoat has always been interested in the messy outcomes of complex (and not so complex) masculinity, and he has a fine ensemble of bold character actors, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Clifton Collins Jr. and Norman Reedus, a squad consisting of active and ex-police and marines who are in deep with, of all things, an orthodox Jewish faction of Russian mafia.

Sporting Star-of-David bling and exceptionally big hair, Kate Winslet’s thickly accented Irina Vlaslov is tougher than any of these compromised men as she tightens the screws on in a way that is reminiscent of Kristin Scott-Thompson’s angry-icicle matron in Only God Forgives. She has leverage on these men in a manner too convoluted to get into here, but suffice it to say that the strength of Triple 9 is that of a pot-boiler par excellence. As the plot vacillates between criminal brotherhood and domestic drama, neither in great detail, there is nevertheless an undertow towards finding out what is going to happen next.

As Harrelson’s pot-smoking, half-drunk super-cop offers advice and sniffs the air for the schemes of dirty cops, Ejoifor tries to get his Ex (a wasted Gal Gadot) to share custody of their son, and Paul continues to break bad, it is Casey Affleck who quietly steals the film as a rookie cop that is somehow both naive and world-weary (welcome to the 21st century folks.) In a different film, Affleck would be front and centre, here he blends into the background until he does not, his performance is a coup of sorts, a combination of acting talent, and directional choices.

There are some who might suggest that this would all work better in the ubiquitous long-form TV format, but I disagree. Sometimes there is a case to be made for a smaller dose of something. Triple 9’s familiar, yet akimbo, clusterfuck of organizations and individuals (with a dash of geopolitics?) has just enough visual panache – a grimy 35mm aesthetic with occasional splotches of bright pink – combined with its ensemble of abundance to pass muster as termite art. It is the kind of adult entertainment, along with the far more thoroughbred Sicario and far, far more abstruse The Counselor, that has been on the endangered species list from movie studios for some time. It is well worth spotting these rare beasts in the wild before they are gone.

Trailer #2 for John Hillcoat’s Triple 9

Here is faster paced, more plot and character heavy UK trailer for the increasingly awesome looking new John Hillcoat picture, Triple 9. A collection of corrupt cops attempt a massive heist, and to distract the rest of the cities branches of law enforcement, they plan to murder one of their fellow officers to create a ‘999’ call which would have most of the police in the city converge in a location as far away the robbery as possible. Featuring the very well stocked cast of Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Norman Reedus, Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul, Anthony Mackey, Gal Gadot, Clifton Collins Jr., and Kate Winslet.

Triple 9 hits US theatres in February 2016, and apparently the European market will get a chance to see it as well, albeit no release date is indicated in the trailer.

This little slice of nastiness from John Hillcoat (The Proposition, The Road), a director who knows his way around balancing bleak and heart, looks to be pushing the envelope of Sicario and Training Day as far as it can go.

Triple 9 has elements of the militarization of police, the war of attrition with crime and violence (severed heads abound), and everyone thrown into the blender. Props to whoever came up with the kids ‘this little piggie’ to score this trailer, because it is damn effective with the imagery on display.

The cast is beyond stacked: Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Norman Reedus, Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul, Anthony Mackey, Gal Gadot, Clifton Collins Jr., and somewhere in there is Kate Winslet. All stuck in John Hillcoat’s murky grime. I cannot wait to wade into this urban warzone in February 2016.

Cinecast Episode 342 – Nobody is Happy After a Three Way

 
The only regret on this episode is that Matt Gamble couldn’t get Frank (from Film Junk) to cry at some point. From Kurt’s drunken obsession with the female form (seriously folks, it is profound) to Andrew’s bafflement at the hatred for Colin Farrell’s lens flares. It’s a good thing Ryan McNeil is somewhat of a veteran of the show as it takes a special type of mortal to endure this kind of full throttle podcast that only the Cinecast can deliver. Lessons learned: Kurt may or may not have had a three-way, gigolos are “amazing”, Robin Wright’s labia is probably what was in Marcellus Wallace’s brief case. Amongst all the tomfoolery, there is a debate on the merits of the Second Indiana Jones film and Amber Heard should retire yesterday. It’s all in here along with plenty more. Thanks to our guests for sticking it out late; it was a show for the ages – yet we magically come in at under three hours – this is what passes for ‘concentrated’ with this podcast…

Cinecast Episode 337 – Hand on the Tiller

Another week another episode of quality TV. Quality of course being an understatement as we bask in the best television (and Matthew McConaughey) has to offer in “True Detective.” With nothing playing in the January mutliplexes, we time travel back 30 years to continue The 1984 Project. Sitting around the marijuana campfire, we lament the demise of The Doobie Brothers, drink full bottles of Jose Cuervo and bask in the Jungle and Lite-Jazz adventure that is Romancing the Stone. The Watch List this week is brief with Joe Dante and Ken Burns. And just for fun, there is a very quick Top 5 list in the mix. No time for the ol’ in and out, we’re just here to read the meter.

Cinecast Episode 336 – The Delivery of Disapproval

Trying out a new segment this week in our 1984 Project. We’ll be reviewing a different high profile (to us, anyway) film from 1984 each week for the foreseeable future. This week, that picture is 1984’s highest grossing film, Beverly Hills Cop. Before we get there though, we talk Iran’s submission for the foreign language Oscar (not nominated), The Past (Le passé). We also have a television show for one of our main reviews in episode one of HBO’s new series, “True Detective.” Lastly, there’s a bit of a watch list tucked in there towards the end of the show as well in which Andrew finally sees the latest Spike Jonze masterpiece and Kurt travels with Julia Roberts and Ms. Streep to Osage County.

Now You See Me [trailer]

Flashy, exotic, big-budget. These are Louis Leterrier’s movies in a nutshell. I wasn’t a fan of The Incredible Hulk, but I do think the Transporter movies are fun for what they are and Clash of the Titans was unfairly railed upon. All of it high art? No of course not. But now maybe Mr. Leterrier is attempting to turn over a new leaf with Now You See Me. Kinda. It still looks flashy and ridiculous but at least it’s something new:

A high caliber cast who robs a bank. With magic. On the other side of the world. In front of a live audience. I’m sold. Nothing else to say other than that making Jesse Eiesenberg look like somewhat of a badass is a magic feat all in teslef. Check out this flashy trailer starring the following. Ready?

Cinecast Episode 277 – He’d Pass a Polygraph But He Ain’t Innocent

In which Andrew and Kurt Argo fuck ourselves trying to get at the pleasures and the frustrations of Benna-fleck’s latest film. We grade homework in the middle (lots of good choices in there). Then we encounter the same set of frustrations and pleasures in counting up the Seven Psychopaths in Martin McDonagh’s latest offbeat violent comedy. The Watchlist is mainly Kurt as he digs through a diverse trio of films (Bernie, Watchmen, The Living Daylights) before waxing rather prosaically (sorry folks) on the great George Carlin. We have a fun time chatting Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” to close out the show.
