After the Credits Episode 117: VIFF Wrap

VIFF 2012 Banner

I wasn’t quite able to keep up the fervered pitch with which the first few dispatched from the festival emerged, too busy with movies and stuff, but we did manage to sneak in one final show. A sort of festival wrap complete with hastily scribbled top tens, this was recorded on the streets on Vancouver mere minutes after the closing gala of Holy Motors.

I’m joined by now podcast regular Bill Harris, new comer Richard Scheib and our friend Lisa to countdown our favourites of the fest along with a couple of stinkers.

In the shuffle of enjoying what is possibly the last VIFF at Empire Granville, we lost Zack Mosley but I caught up with him later for his best and worst of the fest which you can find tucked under the seats.

VIFF Preview: Row Three Recommendations

VIFF 2012 Banner

VIFF kicks off tomrrow and as has become tradition, we’ve dug through the festival catalogue and found 10 titles, listed in alphabetical order, which have us excited. There’s much more we’re anxious to see but you won’t find any special presentations or major award winners on the list below, just a few fantastic looking titles that are flying low on the festival radar.

Happy scheduling and be sure to let us know what you’re looking foward to!

Ape
Title: Ape
Director: Joel Potrykus
Section: Cinema of Our Time
Reason to See: The story of a comedian that plays like a “twisted version of Louis C.K.’s FX show Louie…” that right there puts in on the see list but I must admit what got me were the clips for the movie that are floating around which look awkward and hilarious.

As Luck Would Have It
Title: As Luck Would Have It
Director: Alex de la Iglesia
Section: Cinema of Our time
Reason to See: The Spanish satirist returns to the film circuit with the latest lambasting of society. I have yet to catch up with Iglesia’s previous film which didn’t even play VIFF, but I’m thrilled to see that Iglesia’s newest venture, which focuses on fame, is looking like a hilarious winner.

Blackbird
Title: Blackbird
Director: Jason Buxton
Section: Canadian Images
Reason to See: The story of a teen who is wrongly accused of planning a school shooting, Buxton’s movie is bound to push a few buttons but what caught my attention is that it stars Connor Jessup who I have liked on “Falling Skies” and have wanted to see more from. Looks promising.
