    Row Three's TIFF Coverage

I just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that the TIFF section of the site is now officially open. I’m constantly (okay well not constantly but close too it) the list of movies that are being shown at this years festival.

Each movie is receiving its own post and I will post as much information as I am able to track down. If you have information about any of the movies feel free to jump in and comment on the posts and I’ll add the information in. I also want to just say thanks to Twitch for providing a great resource for the trailers. Its been a big help so far.

Please also feel free to say if you are planning on attending any of the movies in the comments section for the movie. Hopefully we can all arrange to meet up a few times through the 10 day of movie heaven.

Click here for the TIFF section.

I’ve posted a list of all the movies that I have started posts for below the seat.

  • TIFF Section?

    12

I would like to get all of your opinions on a couple things concerning TIFF (and any other festivals we might be attending).

Do you want us to provide in depth coverage of the festival?

If yes, do you want us to provide previews of each movie that we are interested in? I can’t see us previewing every movie simply due to time constraints and if it doesn’t interest us we just don’t want to
    expend the energy covering it.

If yes, do you want us to chat about life during the festival? Perhaps you will get to read about me breaking down while I attempt to make use of my 50 movie pass. ;)

If yes, would it you like to have all of our TIFF coverage to be part of the main site or would you prefer it to be a separate section of the site?

If you do not want us to cover TIFF, why?

Finally, is there anything else you want to see covered concerning festivals in general?

Thanks for your help. I’m planning on adding a bunch more previews to the TIFF section today but if everyone is really interested in the festivals I can always move it over into the main site.

  • TIFF Biggies – Aronofsky, Kaufman, Linklater, Winterbottom, Soderbergh, Boyle, Smith x2

    15
    TIFF 08 Banner

As we get closer and closer to the full Toronto International Film Festival slate being announced, the press office decided to drop a big announcement today several new and high profile films including much anticipated Synecdouche, NY from screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, the epic-length Che biopic from Steven Soderbergh, Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, Rian Johnson’s The Brothers Bloom, Michael Winterbottom’s Genova, and Kevin Smith’s Zack & Miri Make A Porno (which I’m sure will have a great Q&A, Smith does good in that department).

Fans of Babel, Amorros Perros and 21 Grams should note that writer Guillermo Arriaga is making his directorial debut with The Burning Plain; and if you have any interest in the ‘little guy vs. The Ford Corporation’ story with Greg Kinnear, then note that Flash of Genius is also playing.

There is a new Richard Linklater film, but it is a theatre/film hybrid, so attend at your own risk. The film is called Me and Orson Welles.

These will be hard films to get into unless you want to pay the heavy Special Presentation price at the Elgin, a whopping $40 per ticket or so (yie), making the other two off-screenings of the film high demand from pass/coupon holders. But I suspect that it will be easier to attend than previous festivals if you want to spend the $$$.

Lastly, actor Charles Martin Smith (Never Cry Wolf, The Last Casino) is directing the closing film, which stars Robert Carlyle, called Stone of Destiny.

The full Toronto list of 20 Special Presentations (and film descriptions) follow under the seat.

  • Row Three’s Coverage of TIFF 08

    1
    TIFF 08 Banner

I just wanted to let you all know that we have just set up the TIFF section for Row Three. It is still partially under development but right now it contains all available trailers (thanks to Twitch‘s amazing video player) and information on each of the Midnight Madness movies. The plan is for each movie that we are interested in to receive a full post with information, reviews and a trailer. We also encourage comments and discussion on each of the movies.

Once TIFF starts we will also be adding reviews and posts about our experiences in Toronto during the festival.

You can check out the section here.

  • Here Comes The Madness…

    Martyrs

It is a strange way to decompress after attending multiple art and prestige films at the Toronto International Film Festival. At midnight every night, in one of the festivals largest venues, the multitudes come out to get the latest in the extreme and fringe genre films. Programmer Collin Geddes and company always put together a classy and upscale (if that is the right phrase) collection of films to challenge genre fans and this year is no different. Personal highlights are the Thai female martial arts epic from the Ong Bak folks, Chocolate, as well as the strange Being John Malkovich-esque biopic on the Muscles from Brussels, JCVD, the documentary on Australian exploitation cinema Not Quite Hollywood, and the dark French science fiction pic Eden Log.

Here are the programme guide entries for all 10 Midnight Madness entries:

  • TIFF-o-liscious! Film Announcements Galore

    4

Toronto International Film FestivalWe have been slacking in the Toronto International Film Festival announcements, whereas the festival’s Press Office has been issuing film announcements like gangbusters. More Gala Titles, Special Presentations, Contemporary World Cinema and loads of Canadian films.

Fernando Meirelles’ Blindness is not a surprise (although likely a must-see film there) considering its Canadian pedigree of Don McKellar, but if you are a fan of classic Canadian cinema, there will be a screening of the McKellar written (and François “The Red Violin” Girard directed) 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould

A romantic comedy centering around Internet Porn? Control Alt Delete looks pretty interesting. Canada’s first Stop-Motion feature about the invention of the light-bulb, Edison and Leo, as well as the Capturing the Friedmans-esque family drama, Coopers’ Camera. Plus Deepa Mehta has a new film as well and she’s bringing some Bollywood glitter in the form of actress Preity Zinta.

Furthermore, in the higher profile entries from the rest of the world: Cannes buzz-worthy animated war film, Waltz with Bashir, Guy Ritchie’s attempt to snatch back his goofy-gangster fanbase with RockandRolla, Wong Kar-Wai’s remastered and rejiggered downer-wuxia epic Ashes of Time Redux, the sure to be talked about religion laugh-umentary, Religulous, and new Mike Leigh, Happy-Go-Lucky. Also of interest is the new Kiyoshi Kurosawa film, Tokyo Sonata, which keeps the signature style of that filmmaker, but is not a horror film, but rather a drama. Lastly, new Spike Lee and new Baltasar Kormakur are must-sees pour moi!

These are happy times for folks coming into Toronto this fall.

  • More TIFF Titles

    8

Toronto International Film FestivalA few more titles were announced today from the TIFF press office. Spike Lee’s war drama Miracle at St. Anna, Kathryn “Near Dark, Point Break, Strange Days” Bigelow’s latest action flick The Hurt Locker, a Viggo Mortensen starring Good (first I’ve heard of this British-German co production), a John Malkovich starring Australia/South Africa co-production Disgrace, and for the High Fidelity, mix-tape fanatical types (you know who you are) there is the Michael Cera starring Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist.

The proverbial much more is tucked under the seat in the form of the Press Release.

The only downside to this is that the SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS programme (for which these films all fall into) is traditionally held in the Elgin Theatre, which is off limits to regular ‘coupon’ buyers, falling more into the pricey GALA side of things. So expect the ‘off-screening’ in one of the other TIFF venues to be hard to get into.

Are you local? Hope to see/meet a lot of fellow Row-Three folks at the mega-festival in T.O.
