Cinecast Episode 202 – Obviously You’re Not a Golfer

It is a cornucopia, a smörgåsbord, a veritable potpourri of cinema, as the Cinecast regulars get together with nothing on the agenda other than to talk about what they have watched, in the cinema, on the DVD and streamed from the internet or (in an exciting technology development, from the Computer Hard Drive.) Andrew continues to dig into the Foreign Language Nominees with Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Biutiful. Kurt comes at Oscar a different way with the new documentary on the man with the midas touch when it comes to little gold men, Harvey Weinstein. And Gamble talks best animated film of 2011 with a preview of the flat out awesome Gore Verbinski/Nickelodeon/Industrial-Light-And-Magic Johnny Depp western, Rango. From there, we go from the occult, to Penelope Cruz DTV failures, to two vastly different takes time travel from the 1980s to Chinese shopping malls. Then it is onto Romans wandering about Scotland, Aussie crime dynasties and suburban teenage prostitution rings! It is all a part of your complete breakfast.

Cinecast Episode 198 – Pickle

Two films, different colours in the title and vastly different tones in the filmmaking. Kurt and Andrew dig into relationship (and American Ratings Board) dysfunction with Blue Valentine before Gamble saunters in to talk Michel Gondry and his Green Hornet; a film which takes almost nothing seriously but nevertheless comes across as sporadically entertaining (hmmm, echoes of this podcast). Then Gamble gives a preview of the ‘mildly funny time waster’ No Strings Attached. Other things watched include a little Martin Scorsese, a little Edward Zwick, a little David Mamet magic (featuring Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants), some Motorohead and Anime before closing with the war in the parking lot, as the goofy yet delightful documentary, The Parking Lot Movie, makes it to Netflix Instant. As always, DVD picks, tangents and other loquacious frivolities await on the Row Three Cinecast.

Cinecast Episode 173 – Killing Squirrels for Entertainment

From La-La-Land and subbing in for Gamble this week, is RowThree contributor and all around special lady Jandy Stone. Kurt & Jandy immediately get down to business talking Christians and heavenly bodies in Spanish toga epic, Agora (note *SPOILERS*). They move into the Ozarks for another (spoiler-free) look at Debra Granik’s Sundance winner, Winter’s Bone. Jandy then highlights some of her favourite indies and foreign fare taken in at last weeks Los Angeles Film Festival. The LOST Chronicles continue with Kurt eating crow, swallowing most of his past-gripes and actually enjoying Season 4 (“The Freighter“) and particularly enjoy the hell out of Season 5 (“Back to the Future“) of the show. Note: Minutiae (and *SPOILERS*) ensue. DVD Picks and more round out a darn near 3 hour gangly-sized episode.
