Undoubtedly (to me anyway) Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring will act as the Yin to Harmony Korine’s Yang in the shallow soul meltdown of post-MTV America. I’m far more looking forward to Emma Watson struting her stuff here, than swinging an axe in This is the End. What is up with Ms. Watson stealing from celebs? Is this a genre? Check out the excellent, quite stylish, trailer below.
I know that two movies does not a trend make, but doesn’t Sophia Coppola’s youth driven heist film remind one a lot of Spring Breakers? I know that Korine and Coppola are miles apart stylistically, but, at first blush, they seem birds of a feather at least spiritually. Emma Watson, Leslie Mann and Gavin Rossdale star in a plot inspired by actual events involving a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who use the internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob their homes.
In the ‘real’ story, not only was was Paris Hilton robbed, but also Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox. Is there a healthy dose of schadenfreude to be injected into the proceedings, or is it empathy for the privileged elite? It could go either way.
Down beat pop song, ethereal visuals, decadent corridors and damaged souls adrift, yes, it is the new film from Sofia Coppola! Starring Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning, Somewhere may not feature the A-List cast the directors other films, the cast simply melds into the film. I have yet to not love a film from Ms. Coppola and I am completely sold on this one.
Somewhere is an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles; Johnny Marco is a bad-boy actor stumbling through a life of excess at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood. With an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter, Johnny is forced to look at the questions we must all confront.
Trailer is tucked under the seat.
