  • The People Under the Stairs Next on the Craven Remake Train?

    10

The People Under the Stairs One SheetThe first movie I ever watched to scare me stupid was Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs. Until that point, the most shocking thing I’d managed to see (thanks to my over protective parents) was 48 Hrs. and my sister and I watched that through the cracked door of our bedroom since mom and dad didn’t think we were old enough to take in all the swearing. So there we were, I was 12 and watching my first “horror movie” and it features creepy, disfigured human looking “things” living under the stairs. It’s a good thing we didn’t live in a house at the time because if we had, I doubt I ever would have gone down the stairs into the basement.

Craven’s film was on TV last year and I managed to sit through most of it wondering how that had possibly shocked or scared me; I’ve come a long way in a dozen years, but it looks as though Craven may be getting ready to scare more children with people under stairs.

The folks at Jo Blo had a chance to talk with Craven last night and he revealed that there’s talk about remaking The People Under the Stairs. Now how far this will go is anyone’s guess especially considering the long line of re-makes of Craven’s work over the last few years, but I will admit that they haven’t all been bad and I wouldn’t shy away from seeing a new take on the first film that scared me sleepless. And I have to concur with Mike Sampson: better this than a remake/reboot/rewhatever of Nightmare on Elm Street.

  • Live Action Blood: The Last Vampire Teaser

    5

Blood: The Last Vampire Movie StillThat bad habit I was talking about earlier? Well, I’m happy to say that eventually I do get around to watching some of these films as is the case with Blood: The Last Vampire. After re-watching Paprika last week, we thought to continue the anime stream by finally popping in my overly expensive copy of Hiroyuki Kitakubo’s film and I was somewhat impressed.

Though I absolutely love the idea of the character and the style of the film, I had a WTF moment as the credits started to roll. That’s it? It seemed that we were just about to get into the meat of the story when it simply ends. Yes, I was disappointed. I wanted more. Not sure if we’re going to get any more with Chris Nahon’s live-action adaptation but I’m certainly hoping so.

The film stats Gianna Jun as Saya, a vampire who, from what I gather, reluctantly belongs to a government organization that hunts demons and in her most recent assignment, is placed at a school on a military base with the task of finding a demon posing as a student.

It’s not much to go on but a 30 second teaser has popped up online and it certainly looks like it’s staying pretty close to the original material. On the one hand, that pretty freakin’ awesome since the original looked mighty sweet but on the other, I’m concerned that I’m again going to be left wanting more.

According to our friends at Twitch, Blood: The Last Vampire opens in Japan on May 29th and in some European countries in June and though it has an American distributor, no word yet on when or if it will open in these parts.

Check out the teaser tucked under the seat!

  • The Taking of Pelham 123 Trailer

    24

The Taking of Pelham 123 Movie StillI have a bad habit. I tend to buy movies on recommendation alone, which often leads them onto my shelf to sit unwatched for months if not years. That is the case with Joseph Sargent’s The Taking of Pelham 123 which was recommended at some point and which I purchased for $10. It’s still sitting on the shelf – unwrapped but also unwatched. Looks like I’ll have to put a little more effort into sitting down with that one since the trailer for the remake is now kicking around the interwebs.

Directed by Tony Scott, the modern take stars John Travolta as the leader of the kidnappers and Denzel Washington as the Metro worker who ends up as chief negotiator. Watching the trailer I had two thoughts. The first was that there was a whole lot more action going on than I expected and secondly, I’m having a hard time buying Washington as a meek sort of dude who *happens* to get caught up in all of the action. I’m now used to seeing him kick ass and this meek Washington isn’t doing much for me. The one real highlight of the trailer: James Gandolfini. I can’t figure out what role he plays but god I love that guy. The cast is nicely, very nicely actually, rounded out with Luis Guzmán and John Turturro.

Not sure this will be any good but I’m wondering if this will turn out like Domino a lovable, crazy mess of a movie. We’ll find out when The Taking of Pelham 123 opens on June 12th.

  • Review: My Bloody Valentine

    4
My Bloody Valentine 3D One Sheet

Director: Patrick Lussier (White Noise 2: The Light, Dracula 2000)
    Screenplay: Todd Farmer, Zane Smith
    Producer: Jack L. Murray
Starring: Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, Kerr Smith
    MPAA Rating: R
    Running time: 101 min.

In a rare moment of weakness immediately after the Vancouver Canucks’ eighth strait loss on home ice (which I understand is the worst streak since the 1970-71 season), I managed to convince the husband to go to a late show at the local multiplex. I should have known that convincing him in moment of weakness would end poorly.

My Bloody Valentine 3D Movie StillThe choices for a late night film are slim around these parts but we had two options: The Uninvited or My Bloody Valentine which was screening in 3D. Husband decided that it would be “cool” to see the 3D debacle. Things started to go south when I used a $25 gift card to pay for our two tickets and still had to shell out $5. Did ticket prices go up since my list trip to the theatre? Doubtful and after asking a few employees we discovered that the 3D film is indeed more expensive (probably for the use of the 3D glasses which we stupidly returned at the end of the film). After the price induced minor heart palpitation we headed into the theatre. Little did I know that that heart flutter was the most excitement I was going to get for the next 100 minutes.

  • 13 Tzameti Re-Make Announced

    2

13 Tzameti Movie StillA few years ago I took a film class which required a presentation. Basically, you’d show a scene of a film and then talk about it for 5 minutes. Looking through my DVD shelf, I decided to show the class a short clip from Géla Babluani’s first feature, a crime thriller titled 13 Tzameti. At the time, it was a fairly low-key film but I can tell you that the scene peaked a whole lot of interest and for weeks after the fact, my DVD made the rounds to a whole lot of my fellow students.

Babluani’s film is about a young man who finds some cryptic instructions and heads out on an adventure that will likely make him a whole lot of money but he doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into until he arrives at a delapedated house and discovers that he’s become involved in a game of Russian roulette. The film makes some observations on the lengths people will go to for entertainment, the lengths some will take to survive and the dire situation of immigrants and though some of these themes are handled better than others, the film’s magnetic scene of round one is a crowning achievement in tension.

It was only a matter of time before it happened but the wait is over. Screen Daily reports that Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sam Riley and 50 Cent will all be appearing in the remake, simply titled 13, that will also be directed by Babluani (another director reamking his own film for an American audience). I can’t quite figure out what roles Rourke (the organizer?), Statham (the master of the game?) and 50 Cent (??) will play but I have a nagging feeling that Sam Riley (who was brilliant in last year’s Control) will play the lead role which was orinigally filled by the director’s brother.

Considering the original wasn’t exactly a box office success, it doens’t appear to have played outside of the festival circuit in the US, chances are most people will be coming to it fresh. Though on the one hand I think the original trailer, which featured the film’s best scene, was a brilliant way to capture the audience’s attention, I’m hopefull that the Americanized version avoids using it in the trailer and saves it as a savoury surprise for film goers. I doubt it but a girl can hope.

As for those looking to catch up with the original, the film was released on DVD by Palm Pictures. To see what I’m talking about, be sure to check out the trailer under the seat.

  • The Uninvited Trailer for an Uninvited Re-Make

    6

The Uninvited Movie StillA few years ago I had a chance to see Ji-woon Kim’s fantastic A Tale of Two Sisters on the big screen. It was (surprise!) during VIFF, in a packed house at the Vogue. I walked out of that film sore from holding the seat so bloody hard. I saw it again a few years later and the movie didn’t have the same creep factor as the first time I saw it but it was still wholly enjoyable.

Sometime back it was announced that work was underway on an American remake. I was under the impression that the remake shared a title with the original but it looks like that’s not the case. The Uninvited is being directed by English brothers Charles and Thomas Guard and stars a surprisingly good cast including Elizabeth Banks and the fantastic David Strathairn. It’s not clear how much of the story is retained from the original film but it looks like the basic idea is the same: a girl returns home after a stint in a mental hospital.

I doubt that the Guard Brothers can build the tension and mood that made Jee-Woon Kim’s film so successfully creepy but it does look like they’ve gone ahead and taken entire sequences from the original film; sequences that they’ll never get just right.

The trailer looks like your run of the mill horror remake aimed at the teen market, but I have to admit I’m curious. I actually want to see Banks and Strathairn together, plus I’d like to see if any part of this film manages to be creepy (the fact that the film was shot locally also holds some mild appeal).

The Uninvited opens on January 30th.

I’ve tucked both the trailer for the original film and the upcoming remake, under the seat. Watch them both and then go out and rent the original. I doubt the remake will be anywhere near as good (though I’m always up for being surprised).

  • Alex Winter Writing Re-Make of Rock ‘n’ Roll Highschool

    0

Rock \'n\' Roll High School (1979) Movie StillMy first thought was “Wait, isn’t that a Ramones song?” Don’t get yourself all worked up in a tizzy – I now know that it also happened to be a movie, made in 1979 starring the Ramones helping a group of rock-music-loving students take over their school. I’m not a Ramones fan and this one obviously isn’t one of the most memorable of films since I’d never even heard about it until yesterday but there we go, the back story.

The really interesting bit that’s come up is that shock radio show host Howard Stern is behind an upcoming remake of the movie. I didn’t care much for that announcement (Stern doesn’t carry the clout he used to) but what did catch my attention was news over at /Film that Alex Winter, Keanu Reeve’s partner in the Bill & Ted movies, would be writing the script. That, in and of itself would probably be no big deal except that I recently caught up with Winter’s cult classic Freaked, an experience that nearly blinded me with its weirdness.

I’m not sure what to expect from this. Apparently Stern is considering doing the remake with the help of a new rock group. Depending on who they go with, I could, perhaps be curious about the project but as it stands now, I’m just scratching my head wondering what on earth Winter will deliver. If Freaked is any indication, I’m definitely going to have to skip this one.

If you don’t recall the original, worry not. I’ve dragged up the trailer, full of cheesy goodness, which you can check out after the jump!

  • Darren Aronofsky’s Robocop confirmed

    0

Robocop 2I‘m still struggling with the fact that Darren Aronofsky has committed to direct a remake/reboot/whatever of Robocop for MGM. The project is being fast-tracked for a 2010 release date (due to the success of Ironman, perhaps?)

    ScreenDaily
    has confirmed this former rumour.

While Row Three has a love of Robocop (Finite Focus) and all things Paul Verhoeven, and Darren Aronofsky usually makes visually snappy and interesting films, I can’t say that I’m thrilled about this project. Time will tell what approach they will take to the material.

  • Bound to Piss People Off: RoboCop Remake

    11

Robocop Movie StillNot just people either but notably Kurt and Andrew, self proclaimed RoboCop fanboys.

Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic is pretty popular around here and for good reason, it’s a kick ass flick, but it looks like someone feels that the movie is ripe for a remake. Amongst this rabble of news is a silver lining of sorts. We don’t have some hack director wanting to remake this masterpiece but rather a well respected and, around here, well loved director.

News around the web is that Darren Aronofsky, the genious behind Pi, Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain is interested, or at least curious, about the new production. Turns out that Aronofsky recently visited MGM to discuss the franchise reboot.

How much weight could we put on this story? Probably not very much but the thought that Aronofsky could possibly be attached to the remake certainly makes me a little giddy. My fingers are crossed!

  • Russia’s 12 Angry Men Remake Gets a Trailer

    4

12 Movie StillSidney Lumet’s classic 12 Angry Men is one of those films one doesn’t really expect to see remade. The original still holds up beautifully and the fact that it is considered a classic puts it even further off the remake train but what happens when another culture takes the familiar story and puts their own twist on it?

Last year’s Foreign Language Oscar race was an odd one in that I had only heard of one of the films, never mind seen any of them. Out of the five, Beaufort, The Counterfeiters (our review) and Mongol (our review) have all been released in North America but no sign of either Katyn or 12 – until now.

Oscar winning director Nikita Mikhalkov’s film still doesn’t have an official release date but the folks at Sony Pictures Classics have released an English subtitled trailer for the film and it looks fantastic. Gorgeously shot and just enough of a twist on the original story to make it fresh, this is certainly one to keep your eyes peeled for later this year.

I’ll be sure to pass along the release date as soon as it’s available but for the time being, take a look at the gorgeous trailer below.
