  • Clashing Titans…I’m Watching You!

    5

Mads MikkelsenI’d heard some rumblings that the Hollywood machine was looking to update Clash of the Titans, a movie I haven’t seen in decades but of which I still remember specific elements (mostly Harryhausen’s effects). Until this point, I hadn’t been particularly interested in the production which had already signed Louis Leterrier (of The Incredible Hulk, Transporter 2 and Danny the Dog fame) and Sam Worthington (who is certain to make a splash when Terminator Salvation opens later this year) but the announcement of a new addition to the cast has caught my attention.

News today is that in addition to Worthington playing Perseus, Mads Mikkelsen will also star in the film, taking on the role of Draco, the leader of the Praetorian Guard that accompanies the questing hero. Not exactly a role I’d have guessed Mikkelsen to be interested in but after a bit of though, I recalled his appearance in Antoine Fuqua’s King Arthur, another action/adventure epic.

The addition of Mikkelsen doesn’t completely get me on board but it helps. I’m just not sure how a mythical story like this one will play to today’s audience and though I’ve enjoyed Leterrier’s work, I’m not convinced he’s the right guy to direct. That said, they’ve got my attention.

  • Variations on Penélope

It’s the Spanish one sheet for Almodóvar’s new film Los Abrazos Rotos staring the gorgeous Oscar winning Penélope Cruz. This should tide Andrew over until the film picks up some legs and the North American media frenzy begins. That is all. For now.

  • Kaufman Speaks

    0

It’s common for individuals involved with films to enter the media circus once their film is about to or has been released and though Charlie Kaufman has been in the film business for years, I’ve never heard the man speak of the films he’s been involved with.

Last week, David Poland shared an interview which, from what I gather from the comments on post, he conducted with Mr. Kaufman. I’m not familiar with Kaufman “the man” though I have seen a number of the films he has written and though Synecdoche, New York (our review) managed to make multiple appearances on our end of year lists, it’s not a film I cared for and one that confused me to the point where I simply didn’t even care to untangle. Yet, hearing Kaufman speak I can’t but reconsider my reaction and I’ve been convinced to give the film a second chance when it eventually comes to DVD.

It’s a great interview, which doesn’t start off particularly well the opening fits my limited idea of what to expect from Kaufman.

  • Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno Trailer

    10

Seth Rogen + Elizabeth Banks + Kevin Smith should = hysterical but the red band trailer for Smith’s next flick has hit the web and frankly, it’s not funny.

Justin Long cracked me up but the only other laugh was a minor smile when Rogen walks in as the milk man and drops the milk. But it’s only a minor chuckle and it’s a lot less than I had expected from Smith and this cast of funny people. If this is the most we can expect, we’re in for a major disappointment because at the moment, this is not looking good. I’m willing to consider that this will be funny when in the context of the film but at this point, I must admit I’m a little concerned that this will be a flop.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno opens October 31st.

  • Gaming on the Big Screen

    16

GamingBecause the fat cat cinema owners need to make a few more bucks and the hordes need a new way to spend their phat nerd cash, a Canadian cinema chain is stepping up to the challenge.

Beginning Friday August 15th, Cineplex Entertainment, one of Canada’s largest theater chains, will be offering theater rentals to X-Box owners looking to play their games on the big screen. Gamers will have the opportunity to book two-hour sessions at 29 Cineplex theatres across the country for the measly cost of $179 plus tax. Each session is limited to a group of 12 and individuals will be able to play their own games or borrow them from a supplied library. I can just see the hordes of 20 something gamers playing GTAIV on the big screen with surround sound.

Scouring the Cineplex website, I notice that they haven’t updated it to include details on the rentals, namely which 29 theaters. I’m also assuming that Cineplex will provide the gaming console and you just bring your games.

A couple of things to consider: though you can have a party of up to 12, the console only allows 2 users at a time, there are also no details on whether on-line play will be allowed though I’m going to assume that it won’t be an option that is available immediately. I also have a feeling that as cool as this sounds, it’s going to appeal more to the hordes of birthday party goers (read: kids) than any actual gamers. Thought it could be cool, I highly doubt a bunch of adults will sit around, drinking non-alcoholic beverages, waiting patiently for their turn at the controls. That sounds LAME.

The rentals will be available during the theaters’ downtime which means when no movies are playing which, for the most part, is early in the morning. Yeah, let me get up early to shell out $180 to play some lame ass game on the big screen.

On the bright side of things, it’s nice to see Cineplex trying new things. I’m hoping they’ll realize that no-one cares about the X-Box anymore. Suggestion: get a few Wii’s, get people to bring their own controllers and provide a few awesome games (Mario Kart!). You’re welcome. I’ll wait for the cheque to come in the mail. Or even better, how about online gaming on the big screen?

Thanks to Dale for the heads up on this amusing development.
