Cinecast Episode 359 – Downtown China

Not sure even where to start with the monologue this week. Let’s see, there’s The Bay-Man’s fourth installment in the giant robots fiasco; which inexplicably is really easy to get worked up about. It’s not really worthy of hate, nothing to love, yet so easy to rant about. There’s a “sick, twisted desire” to torture ourselves over this movie – plus always an opportunity to delve into Andrew’s sordid history with the franchise.

Before all of this is Bong Joon-Ho’s English language debut with Snowpiercer and it’s overly satirical view of our apocalyptic, dystopian future on a crazy train. And Chris Evans is there. And protein bars made of shitty CGI.

The 1984 project continues with Val Kilmer’s first starring role in Top Secret!. He sings, dances, talks backwards, bar fights underwater and delivers punchlines that will be stolen by countless films for the next thirty years.

The Watch List sees Kurt wrapping up Breaking Bad, Andrew living in Tiny Houses, and Matt enjoying Disney’s Amblin knock-off currently playing in theaters. It’s a 150 minute power rant. LATRINE!

Cinecast Episode 224 – Sundancey

Sorry for the delay folks. We had a problem with a batch of bandwidth gremlins, as Kurt like to call them. But fear not, the show is as strong as ever and continues on with a more positive wave length than I can remember for a long time. Since we’re in such high spirits, it’s only natural we talk about dentistry and weather patterns to start the show. But then it’s to reviews for Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Mike Cahill’s Another Earth. Beware, both of these discussions are ** VERY HEAVY ON SPOILERS!! **. If you’re worried about the spoiler thing, just fast forward ahead as we have lots to dive into with this week’s Watch List; from afro-hair to life saving taxi drivers to Donald Sutherland in a toga, it’s quite the diverse show. And because it’s Andrew’s birthday… he is always correct for the duration of this recording.

“Jumper” Sequel a Maybe

While everyone talks about the terrible trailer for Doug Liman’s new political “thriller,” Fair Game, it reminded me that I needed to check up on Jumper 2 news/rumors. And lo and behold, Hayden Christian mentioned in a quick interview with the magicians over at MTV that there are some rumblings about a script being developed for the next film.

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

“We’re talking about it right now actually…Hopefully [the story will go] somewhere a little darker. I think there’s a lot, lot, LOT you can do with it. But, ya know it was sort of set up in a way that it’s gonna be mother hunting son and possibly even maybe, ya know, sister hunting brother. We’re talking about it, trying to figure it out.”

So yeah, I admit it; I’m a fan of the original Jumper movie (in fact, I like most of Liman’s previous work) for a lot of reasons. Hayden Christiansen doesn’t happen to be one of those reasons, but I definitely look forward to more of the story. I liked the way this character used his super powers believably (before Hancock did) and I dig the rest of the cast (particularly Jaimie Bell was awesome in this). The jumping effect was used… effectively and I thought the action sequences were wicked as hell.

I know I’m in a very small minority here but the movie took in well over $200 million so the demand for a sequel is likely there. And despite what people say – because they don’t want to admit to liking a Christiansen movie – they’re gonna go back for a second round because they secretly liked the first one. Even if it was just for Rachel Bilson.
