  • Brody, Weisz and Ruffalo in Brothers Bloom Trailer

    19

The Brothers Bloom Movie StillIf you still haven’t seen Rian Johnson’s modern noir Brick starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I’m just not sure what you’ve been waiting for. That film is a brilliant take on the noir film and though I’ve never been a big fan of the genre, it was difficult not to enjoy Johnson’s story of mystery, murder and intrigue.

For his second film, Johnson has decided to take on something a little lighter in tone. The Brothers Bloom stars Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo as con men who have made a life for themselves swindling millionaires. But these guys don’t just steal, they take pleasure in setting up and executing complex cons. For their last bang, the duo put together a team to pull the wool over the eyes of Rachel Weisz, a millionaire who collects hobbies. Yes, you read right: she collects hobbies (you must check out the trailer – it’s hysterical). Unfortunately for them, things get complicated when they fall in love.

I have to admit, this is not what I expected for Johnson’s follow-up but I’m happy to see that he’s not sticking to one genre or look. Unsurprisingly, this looks wonderfully entertaining and I look forward to seeing Brody and Ruffalo playing off of each other.

The Brothers Bloom opens October 24th.

Trailer is tucked under the seat!

  • Review: Pineapple Express

    45
    Pineapple Express one-sheet

Director: David Gordon Green (All the Real Girls, Snow Angels)
Writers: Evan Goldberg, Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen
    Producers: Judd Apatow, Shauna Robertson
Starring: Seth Rogen, James Franco, Gary Cole, Amber Heard, Rosie Perez
    MPAA Rating: R
    Running time: 111 min

When you think of director David Gordon Green, you’ll have one of two reactions: 1) who? or 2) arty, drama film. Stoner-comedy is not the genre that springs to mind. But for all intents and purposes, that’s exactly what Pineapple Express is. An easy, three-word review would be: it was funny.

Rogen is Dale Denton. A late twenties, slob of a guy who works his day job as a process server only to make enough money to hang out with his high school aged girlfriend and buy pot from his dealer, Saul (Franco). When Dale accidentally witnesses a murder by a notorious crime boss and a lady cop who are in cahoots, he panics and flees the scene as unintentionally loudly as possible. With the criminals following the clues to Dale’s identity and his whereabouts, Dale goes to the one guy who might be able to keep him safe: stoner Saul. The two hit the road in an attempt to find out what the bad guys know or don’t know and figure a way out of their predicament. Along the way, they find that they have more than just a business partnership. Maybe they’re best friends too.

  • BEST Review of Mamma Mia! Guaranteed to Crack You Up

    11

I thank Andrew for turning me onto the reviews of BBC hired gun Mark Kermode. He’s a bit brash, sometimes rude and we often disagree but he’s fun to listen to.

Earlier today I was catching up on the podcast from last week when I experienced the most embarrassing public display of uncontrollable laughter I’ve had in months. Usually, these come at the hands of the Film Junk guys but this time around, it came care of Dr. Kermode.

Turns out that Mamma Mia! opened in the UK last week, it opens in the US on Friday, and the good doctor was good enough to review it and frankly, it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen all year. There’s witty criticism accompanied by singing and dancing. And as expected, the movie is a winner even though it’s a complete disaster.

    Have yourself a laugh:

  • Ultimate Geek: Transformer Washcloth

    4

I want to see the fanboys jump behind this one.

    Knit Transformers Cloth

That there is a transformers washcloth. If you’re a knitter, you can check out the details on how to make your very own fancy-wancy washcloth over at Make. For the rest, we’ll be holding a knitting session next week Tuesday, 7PM.

And since we’re already meeting, maybe we can also get lessons on:

    Jayne’s Hat:
    Jayne\'s Hat

    Starbuck’s Mandala Hat:
    Starbuck’s Mandala Hat

Thanks to Colleen at 353 Review for the heads up on the washcloth. The rest I already knew about. And maybe the fact that I learned to knit just so I could make myself a Jayne’s hat makes me even geekier.
