  • Tarantino Keeps His Promise

    3

Inglorious Bastards posterLike clockwork, Quentin Tarantino churns out another great film about every two years. Last year, after screening Death Proof at Cannes, Tarantino promised he’d be back in 2009 with a finished copy of his latest film, Inglorious Basterds.

Variety is reporting that QT is heading into the editing room post haste to cut a copy of the film that will be ready to be shown at The Cannes Film Festival sometime in May (13th – 24th). If that’s the case, we should see the estimated wide release date of August 21st come to light.

I always look forward to the next Tarantino project and Inglorious Basterds is no exception. Also according to Variety, the film will be split into five chapters:

Chapter 1: Once Upon a Time in Nazi Occupied France
    Chapter 2: Inglourious Basterds
Chapter 3: German Night in Paris (filmed in “French New Wave Black and White”)
    Chapter 4: Operation Kino
Chapter 5: Revenge of the Giant Face

  • Steven Soderbergh’s Che Spanish Trailer

    0

There’s been a lot of speculation, even around here, as to whether Steven Soderbergh’s vision of Che Guevara which was shown in one sitting at Cannes, will ever see the light day. Will it be one movie? Two movies? Shown separately? Together? Cut? There are many questions most of which remain unanswered.

The film still doesn’t have a distribution date for the US but I noticed while doing a bit of pocking around that there’s a bit of inconsistency in the releases. I was originally under the impression that The Argentine was the second film in the grouping but it may well be the fist since it has a Spanish release date of September 5th with no US release scheduled where as Guerrilla has no release dates scheduled at all. This is further supported by the fact that we now have a Spanish trailer for the film which went live yesterday. I could have been confused in my initial understanding of which story comes first or this could be a combination of the two films. At this point, your guess is as good as mine. What is clear is that the Spaniards will get to see this first and further, it suggests that the studio has no idea of what to do with this film for a North American audience.

The trailer itself is a bit grainy and the sound slightly distorted but it still looks good and the dialog, what little of it there is, hints at what we can expect. At one point, there’s a comment that a population that can’t read is a population that can be persuaded. Looks like Soderbergh is aiming for the jugular.

  • Brand New Blindness Poster: Fingers

    5

We’re only about a month and a half away from the wide release of Blindness and I have to say I’m kind of getting excited about it. After reading our good friend Rot’s review some time back, I have to admit to be being a bit nervous that the studio is going to crop out some of the more worthwhile material, but judging from everything I’ve seen thus far, we’re probably all in for a real treat. Something different. Something scathing. Something captivating. With the other reviews out there being sort of moxed, that probably means something good. Maybe a Children of Men meets Bug? Mmmm. Sounds good.

At any rate, another cool looking poster from the upcoming film – released September 19th:

  • Trailer for Atom Egoyan’s Adoration

    2

Adoration Movie StillThe release of a new Egoyan film is always a bit of an “event” for fans of Canadian film but I must admit I was a bit concerned that Adoration wasn’t particularly well received at Cannes and having seen the trailer, I can sort of see why.

According to a wiki entry, the film focuses on the story of Simon, a young man obsessed with the idea that he is the spawn of two historical figures. There has been talk that the film is also a look at how internet culture affects individuals and creates/breaks down relationships something which is much more in line with the themes in Egoyan’s previous works. Devon Bostick plays the role of Simon and the film also co-stars Scott Speedman, who seems to be working almost exclusively in Canada over the last few years, and Rachel Blanchard.

The Twitch folks have dug up the promotional trailer for Cannes and I have to admit, I’m not impressed. There are a few interesting moments in the trailer, namely the camera pan along a park but the rest of it comes off as amateurish. Speedman seems to be walking through his performance while Blanchard appears to be in acting in a completely different film, namely a melodrama. Hopefully the reaction is only a response to the way the trailer has been cut but at the moment, I’m not at all impressed.

Adoration is scheduled to open on January 7th.

  • Banners from Cannes

    8

There probably isn’t anyone here around Row Three who wouldn’t give up their left arm to be wandering around Cannes right now. Since that is not going to happen** I figured I’d point you over to JoBlo.com to see some banners and other cool stuff that has been set up. My favourite is:

    cannes-jcvd

One of the commenters over at JoBlo made me laugh pretty hard when they asked why Lance Henriksen was on the JCVD poster.

**While none of us are actually at Cannes (this year anyway), we do have a review for the film that opened the festival – Fernando MeirellesBlindness (here)
