  • Another Comic Book Goes Big Screen – Care of John Woo

    27

    Caliber Comic Covers

If you thought that the comic book/Hollywood marriage was on its way out, or if you were holding your breath for the day the divorce came, you may want to reconsider and take a few more breaths otherwise, you aren’t going to make it. Now that we’re almost through adapting the big name comics and even digging through some of the minor characters, the time has come to start thinking about those shiny new stories hitting the shelves.

Sam Sarkar’s “Caliber” is one hot commodity. The premise: Arthurian legend transported to the Wild West. Hum, King Arthur as a gunslinger? I guess I could go with that. According to the official website for the comic

The Arthurian legend as retold in the American Old West, with all of its great symbolism, magic and spirit of adventure. The Knights of the Round Table are all gunslingers bound by a code of honor to protect the weak and defend the innocent until they are undone from within by their own moral corruption. In this tale, Caliber itself is a tattooed six-gun, given to Arthur by the Indians and imbued with supernatural power. The secret of the gun is that it is never loaded with bullets, but when a man with Justice on his side is holding it, it can fire. When it does, it fires Thunder itself and never misses.

Admitedly, this sounds like it could be fun. Not sure I can let go of my traditional vision of Arthur and his knights but I’m willing to give it a break at least until I check out the comic.

The real reason to even care about the comic to begin with is the announcement that the great John Woo is going to be directing a film based on the comic. Oh dear. John Woo and the wild west? I guess it could be cool but I pine for the long gone days of Hard-Boiled.

I’m waiting for the day when it’s announced that Michael Haneke is making a comic book adaptation. At the rate we’re going, it’s probably not too far down the road.

  • Zack Snyder’s Watchmen Trailer

    12

Watchmen Movie StillFor one reason or another, likely because everyone else and their mother is gushing about it, we haven’t posted anything on 300 director Zack Snyder’s much anticipated upcoming film Watchmen.

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel from Alan Moore (to this day the only graphic novel to have won a Hugo) the film stars a whole load of people that has me quite excited: Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Goode, (that’s quite the trio!) and Jackie Earle Haley among a load of others.

I had to read the wiki entry for the book to get a gist for what was going on because the trailer doesn’t give us non-fans much. What I can gleam from it all is that the story takes place in an alternative history United States in which “a group of past and present superheroes and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own.”

The comic is considered to be quite groundbreaking and I’ve read and enjoyed some of Moore’s other works (notably “V for Vendetta” and “Top Ten”) but this one has continued to elude me, mostly because it always seems to be sold out at my local comic haunt. I’m just not hardcore enough to order it or ask them to reserve me a copy.

Thanks to Devin at CHUD for the tip, the trailer is up over at Empire. It’s gorgeous, I give it that, but it’s also slightly mystifying. I have no idea what’s going on. I may have to break down and order that book after all.

    Watchmen opens March 6, 2009.

  • DiCaprio and Crowe in Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies Trailer

    4

Body of Lies Movie StillI had completely forgotten this film was even in production never mind getting ready for release but with the trailer premiering with The Dark Night, the web has been abuzz with talk of Ridley Scott’s new film.

An action drama titled Body of Lies, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a former journalist injured in the Iraq war who is hired by the CIA, represented in all its might by Russell Crowe, to track down an Al Qaeda leader in Jordan. The film is based on a novel by acclaimed journalist and novelist David Ignatius.

The trailer isn’t bad but it’s not particularly attention grabbing either. Watching it, I couldn’t help but think I’d seen a lot of it before in a load of other recent films. There seem to be bits of everything from Rendition to Syriana with a dash of The Bourne Ultimatum in for good measure. Frankly, this story does nothing for me and if someone else was directing and starring in this, I might completely overlook it but how does one say no to the triple threat of Scott, DiCaprio and Crowe? Can one even resist?

We’ll be finding out soon enough. Body of Lies is scheduled to open on October 10th.

  • Wicked Musical Comes to (Green) Screen

    1

Wicked The Musical One SheetI haven’t read any other works from novelist Gregory Maguire but “Wicked” was a wonderfully enjoyable read. A revisionist take on “The Wizard of Oz”, it outlined the so-called wicked witch’s life and I must admit that from her perspective, she was badly wronged. So much for that Dorothy girl getting all the attention and poor green-skin afflicted Elphaba being a bad seed; she’s just misunderstood!

I never quite figured out how Maguire’s brilliant novel skipped the movie bandwagon and went direct to Broadway musical but it seems that a movie was never completely written off and now that the story has captured millions of adoring musical fans, a movie adaptation has been announced.

The film is only mentioned in passing among a long list of other projects on the go for producer Marc Platt (and it’s not the only one that could be interesting) but details are limited at the moment. There’s no mention on who will direct or star or even if this will be a musical adaptation or if they will simply take Maguire’s original novel and adapt that for the screen. I haven’t seen the musical but considering how wildly successful it’s been, I’m willing to bet it’s pretty good. Either way, it should make for a fun trip to the movies.

I’m starting to think we need to find a young woman to replace the huge gap which has been left by Julie Andrews and the wholly unnecessary growing up business.

  • DeVito to Direct Ronan, Brosnan and Freeman

    36

Saoirse RonanIt’s been a decade since Danny DeVito directed his last film for children. Matilda had a charming lead in Mara Wilson (a child actress whose career seems to have dried up) but the film wasn’t particularly good or memorable. DeVito seems to have improved over the last few years and it looks like he’s figured the time is at hand to return to children’s fare; this time hitting up tween market.

DeVito has adapted and signed on to direct Charlotte Doyle, based on a Newbery Honor book written by acclaimed American author Edward Irving Wortis (also known by his pen name of Avi). The novel is about Charlotte, a thirteen year old girl who makes a trans-Atlantic crossing from England to America in the 1832 and finds herself caught between a charismatic but ruthless captain and a mutinous crew. The project has attracted Oscar nominated Saoirse Ronan to the title role (this girl’s on fire! She has Death Defying Acts and the great looking City of Ember coming out this year), Pierce Brosnan as the captain and Morgan Freeman as the ship’s cook.

I’m not quite sure what to make of this. On the one hand, it’s a great cast but I’m not sure a film set on a ship in the 1830′s is going to manage enough material for a film. I haven’t read the novel so I could be way off but at the moment, I don’t see it. To make matters worse, I’m also not sure this is what tweens want to watch. Heck, “it” girl of the moment Abigail Breslin couldn’t sell a movie set in the 30′s how do these guys expect to sell this one set on a ship among a group of men? This may be dead before it even hits the water.

  • Frank Miller’s Second The Spirit Trailer

    2

    The Spirit - Octopus Banner

I wasn’t sold on the first trailer for Frank Miller’s upcoming directorial debut. Admittedly the style of the film certainly looks good but style alone doesn’t make for entertaining film watching.

Starring Gabriel Macht in the title role, The Spirit is the story of a a rookie cop who is murdered and comes back as The Spirit in order to fight the “dark forces” at play in Central City. From this new trailer, it also seems that along the way, he keeps bumping into women he’s had relationships with and what a group of vengeful women they are: Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Jaime King, Paz Vega and Sarah Paulson. There seems to be a whole lot more at play here than I originally anticipated and I must admit that I’m a bit smitten by the the supernatural bend of the trailer. I’m neither a big fan of noir nor a connoisseur of Will Eisner’s classic but this new trailer comes as an unexpectedly positive surprise.

The film was originally scheduled to open in January but it looks as thought the forces that be have decided that this is good enough for a holiday release and The Spirit has been bumped up to open on December 25th.

The new trailer is tucked under the seat!

  • Choke Redband Trailer

    3

You know, that little Clark Gregg movie based on Chuck Palahniuk’s novel. You know the one I’m talking about. The one starring Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston and Kelly Macdonald.

Who am I kidding. Of course you know. I’m sure you also know it opens September 26th.

“If this movie doesn’t touch you, go ahead and touch yourself.” Great. I hope this doesn’t mean I’ll have to keep away from screening rooms full of people touching themselves. Gross.

At least it cracked me up!

Check out the trailer at the official website.

  • Robert Downey Jr. is the Next Holmes

    4

Robert Downey Jr.I started writing a post about this earlier today only to realize that Jonathan noted that Robert Downey Jr. was already in talks to star in one of the two upcoming Sherlock Holmes films – namely the “serious” one being directed by Guy Ritchie. Yeah, it’s interesting news but it’s not new yet Downey Jr. is now enough of a big player to get coverage over his every move.

I’ll follow suit, mostly to bring up something else. It has now been confirmed that the great Robert Downey Jr. will star in Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes which is in the pipeline for a 2010 release.

I love the fact that Downey Jr. has re-entered the Hollywood stratosphere and is getting the attention he deserves but I’m curious to see if he’ll ever make the return to smaller filmmaking. Like Christian Bale, have these actors become such big stars that we’ll never see them in another Chaplin or American Psycho? I’d like to think not but looking at both of these actor’s upcoming filmographies, I don’t see anything of particular interest and sadly, it feels like we’ve “lost” two great actors to the Hollywood blockbuster/celebrity machine. I sincerely hope that’s not the case but it certainly feels that way at the moment. The best I can hope for is that even within the trappings of big studio/big money productions, they continue to expand their horizons and provide viewers with the top notch performances we’ve come to expect. At least in that respect, it looks as though Downey Jr. and Bale will not disappoint.

  • Mark Wahlberg in Max Payne Trailer

    8

Max Payne Movie StillWe all know that generally speaking, films based on video games suck. It’s a very broad and general statement but for the most part, the truth hence, I wasn’t expecting much from the upcoming video game adaptation Max Payne.

Starring Mark Wahlberg in the title role, the film has a pretty sweet lineup including Beau Bridges, Mila Kunis and a guy whose career was nearly killed by another superhero movie, Chris O’Donnell. The project is being directed by John Moore whose name I didn’t recognize but, looking at his filmography, I’ve seen and enjoyed most of his films including last year’s underrated The Omen, the 2004 remake of Flight of the Phoenix which didn’t match the greatness of the original but which was great in its own way, and Behind Enemy Lines. Pretty good track record in my books.

People are saying this is the movie they had expected from Hitman (our review). I can’t really comment on that because I thoroughly enjoyed Hitman but I am impressed by the look of this trailer. Having never played the game, I’m not sure if the noir aspects are part of the original story but I do love the way this looks not to mention, they seem to be taking this down the ultra serious route which could work to the film’s benefit or, on the flip side, could kill it. I like what I see and am willing to find out for myself.

Max Payne is scheduled to open on October 17th.

  • Roller Derby Greatness Adds More Cast Members!

    3

Zoe BellI know nothing about roller derby but you say roller skates and full contact sport and I’m definitely curious to find out more. I’ve seen a couple of videos and though I haven’t read the entire wiki entry on the sport yet, it looks like I’m missing out on a whole lot of action. Hopefully, a new film on the horizon will help fix all of that.

Drew Barrymore’s feature film directorial debut Whip It! has been abuzz since it was originally announced. With a script by Shauna Cross adapted from her own novel, it’s the story of an indie-rock loving misfit who finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery when she discovers a roller derby league.

Ellen Page had already been cast in the central role but four more cast members were announced last week: Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig (busy girl!), Juliette Lewis and the fabulous Zoe Bell. I’m guessing this thing is going to be darn funny and with the inclusion of Bell in there, I’m also assuming we’ll be seeing some serious action sequences. Can you say girl fight? This one’s sounding mighty interesting!

To get you pumped, I dug through YouTube for a few clips of roller derby action and I found a few but the one below gives a nice feel for the physical contact involved in the sport.
