  • ANVIL: Rockers Turned Movie Stars

    3

ANVILYou’ve seen them. I’ve seen them. Those made for tv biographies that set out to make movie stars, musicians and politicians seem like regular folk and which tend to outline how hard it was for them to overcome one problem or another to “make it”. I realize that everyone has faced some sort of adversity and I’m not knocking people that really had to work hard to get to where they are today but reading about ANVIL makes all of these folks on “Behind the Music” look like a bunch of pussies.

ANVIL is a Canadian heavy metal band which was formed in 1978 by a bunch of guys trying to make it to the big time. The band has had a steady stream of record labels and releases since the beginning but try as they might, they’ve never been “discovered”. One would figure that after nearly 30 years of working day jobs and playing gigs, they’d give up but ANVIL. These guys are don’t believe in throwing in the towel and they’re still rocking hard.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil, a documentary directed by former band roadie Sacha Gervasi, just premiered at Sundance to lots of love and positive buzz but sadly, apparently no distribution deals. It’s being toted as the real life This is Spinal Tap and I can sort of see why.

As of yet, there isn’t a real trailer for the film but there’s a great Sundace video which includes Robert Redford talking to a very shocked Gervasi about the film, the ANVIL guys being superstars and some footage from the documentary which will hopefully get some sort of release.

  • A Rambo that Doesn’t Suck: Son of Rambow Trailer

    4

Over a year before people started talking about it after its spectacularly positive Sundance debut, Garth Jennings’ Son of Rambow is finally scheduled to open in limited release in May. The film stars two young new comers, Bill Milner and Will Poulter, as friends making their version of Rambo. Apparently, that’s the simplified version of the plot as it appears that the film also has friendship, girl and growing-up issues all stuffed in there for good measure.

The trailer plastered a smile on my face from the very first bit of dialog but I nearly lost it when one of the kids enters a room and yells “I’ve come to save you Rambo!” and then cut to Rambo…the best looking Rambo ever. FANTASTIC.

Looks like seriously good fun. I just hope it manages to open up here before the year is out!

  • The Children of Huang Shi Trailer

    1

The Children Of Huang Shi Movie StillI first caught wind of The Children of Huang Shi a few months back and since my first visit to the website, very little has changed; no new stills, no new information, no new updates. However, that doesn’t mean a trailer hasn’t miraculously appeared.

The film is directed by Canadian Roger Spottiswoode and stars Yun-Fat Chow, Michelle Yeoh, Radha Mitchell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as George Hogg, a British journalist who helps an Australian nurse save some orphaned children during the Japanese occupation of China in World War II. The film apparently covers the period of 1938 to 1945, which would include the infamous Rape of Nanking.

With this much talent in front of the camera and an interesting sounding story, I’m expecting to see a good film but I’m a bit concerned about Spottiswoode. His record is a little spotty and includes good films like Under Fire and Shake Hands with the Devil and less than stellar fair such as The 6th Day and Turner & Hooch. And now that I’ve seen the trailer, I’m even more concerned that this could go very, very wrong.

The Children of Huang Shi is scheduled to open in limited release in the US on May 23rd. We’ll have to wait to see if this has the legs to widen beyond NY and LA.

  • New, and Pretty, Trailer for My Blueberry Nights

    6

My Blueberry Nights Movie PosterWong Kar Wai, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman and Jude Law. Those names excite me but add in Norah Jones and I wonder what the hell her name is mixed in amongst so much acting talent. Not to say she’s not talented but she is a singer and we all know how often the singer to actor transition actually manages to work and the average isn’t good.

Folks have been abuzz about My Blueberry Nights since the film first premiered at Cannes last May but for whatever reason, the release has been pushed back a couple of times. Now, unless someone changes their mind again, the film is rearing up for release on February 13th, just in time to rope in the crowd in the mood for Valentines Day romantic fodder.

We have a new cut of the trailer for the film which centers around a woman making a “soul-searching journey across America to resolve her questions about love while encountering a series of offbeat characters along the way”. The sappy movie lover in me is happy to give this a shot but the critical thinker isn’t impressed by any of the trailers it’s seen – including this one – and unfortunately, the aesthetic of a film alone can rarely rescue the mess. In a few weeks, we’ll know just how good, or bad, this really is.

Thanks to /Film for a heads up on the trailer.

  • Brace Yourself: Get Smart Trailer

    9

    Oh good god.

I was mildly curious about the upcoming film incarnation of the beloved TV Show but now that I’ve seen the mind numbing trailer for Get Smart, I’ve officially lost hope.

Starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terence Stamp, Bill Murray, David Koechner and Ken Davitian this crappy looking thing follows Agent 86 on his first assignment and it looks really they’ve missed the boat on the funny.

Don’t take my word for it thought, check out the trailer below. This mess opens June 20th.

At this point, the direct to DVD tie-in that they’re working on sounds more interesting.

  • Bond Title Revealed

    8

Daniel Craig as 007Producers of the next James Bond film, tentatively titled “Bond 22,” have revealed the title to the next installment. According to CNN, the title is Quantum of Solace. Whatever that means.

Opening sometime in November, Daniel Craig reprises his role as Bond that was a fairly decent critical and box office hit in 2006. Also returning is Judi Dench as M and and Mathieu Amalric (“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”) will be playing the villain.

I can’t say I’m super excited about this project. Bond films are fun, nothing more for me. Still, they’ve got my money; now it’s just a wait and see game.

  • Why I Want to See Rambo

    3

I‘ve committed myself to spending a whole load of time in front of the TV with “Lost” this weekend but somewhere in there, I’m going to have to pull myself away and head out to the theater to catch Rambo. I’m not expecting great things but I do expect lots of guns, lots of blood and lots, lots, lots of killing. And apparently, I’m going to get my wish.

  • Uma Thurman Comeback: Life Before Her Eyes Trailer

    6

Life Before Her Eyes Movie PosterI‘ve always been a fan of Uma Thurman but the last few years have not gone particularly well for the talented actress. Apart from her turn as The Bride in the Kill Bill films, her filmography goes from bad to worse: Paycheck, Be Cool, Prime, The Producers, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and the upcoming The Accidental Husband which doesn’t look any better than the previously mention bombs. But people have been talking that another film on the horizon has potential, loads of it.

The drama Life Before Her Eyes stars Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood playing the same character, 20 years apart. The IMDb description is pretty vague but it’s the only thing to go on at the moment and it reads:

A woman’s survivor’s guilt from a Columbine-like event twenty years ago causes her present-day idyllic life to fall apart.

The trailer, which comes care of Cinematical, only vaguely suggests a death and to be honest, I’m not all that impressed by it but I’m very hopeful that folks aren’t pulling my leg and this will indeed be better than the stuff she’s been churning out over the last few years. It certainly has potential and Thurman and Rachel Wood have the talent to make this work – if it manages to avoid clichés and sappy, over the top moments. We’ll see if director Vadim Perelman (of House of Sand and Fog fame) can pull it off.

Life Before Her Eyes is scheduled for limited release on April 18th.

And by the way, that there is the current poster and for the record, I think it sucks the big one.

  • Depp in Wonderland

    2

This is just sort of a possible hypothetical, but as you may or may not know, one of Tim Burton’s up and coming projects is a live-action version of the Lewis Carroll classic, “Alice in Wonderland.” While not slated for a release until 2010, the casting rumor mill is already in the works as filming begins in May of this year. During an interview with The Telegraph, Johnny Depp told reporters that he’d be “a superb lead” and more than interested in playing the part. Yeah, that would be Alice.

“I’d like to have a go at it, if Tim lets me. I could be the first male Alice. It would certainly give it a surreal edge.”

So at first this sounds weird, but thinking more about it, why not? He’s versatile as hell (except in singing) and he’s Burton’s bed-buddy. So I think this could actually work. He’d either actually play Alice, or they could just change the name to Alister or something. Anyway, neat idea and I wouldn’t be surprised one iota if this turns out; in fact, I’ll be surprised if this doesn’t happen. The more I think about it the more I like the thought.

Please hold your applauze on the photoshop skillz. It’s a gift I have.

  • Diary of the Dead

    3

It is horror movie and poster week at Row Three. Hot on the heels of Cloverfield‘s highly successful debut, along comes a fresh One Sheet for George A. Romero‘s verité-styled zombie film, Diary of the Dead.

I did manage to catch this at the Toronto International Film Festival and my review is posted over at Twitch.

  • Larry Who? Hell Ride Poster Awesomeness

    8

Everyone knows who Quentin Tarantino but who the heck is this Larry Bishop dude? I had to look him up to find out he’s an actor but to be honest, I don’t think that matters much. What does matter is that the poster for the Bishop’s upcoming movie, Hell Ride, is awesome. The film stars Bishop, Dennis Hopper, Michael Madsen and Vinnie Jones as a bunch of bikers with “unfinished business among them”.

I have a bit of a question about this poster though. It’s says “Carradine” at the top. Now, I’m assuming that refers to the great David Carradine but I don’t see him listed in the credit list. Did someone make a booboo? Is Carradine in or out?

Check out the sick poster (which I need to track down) below care of /Film.

Also, the folks at First Showing have some great still from the film which is scheduled to open at some point in 2008.

  • Captain JJ Abrams and his Enterprise

    18

Being the geeks that we are, it’s hard to totally disassociate ourselves from the Star Trek universe. So in light of that, I came across the first image of the Enterprise being used in the upcoming Star Trek 11 film over at moviefone. Doesn’t look much different from any other Enterprise of the past, but hey, it’s cool right?
