  • The Big Dirty Heading South With New Trailer

    4

While prepping for our January preview, Dale discovered that Canada’s very own Trailer Park Boys, whose first feature film Trailer Park Boys: The Big Dirty hit Canadian theaters during the winter of 2006, was heading South at the end of the January, even though the film has seen Canadian distribution and even a DVD release. But really, who cares as long as our friends south of the border get to enjoy in more of TPB love.

I haven’t seen it though the husband has assured me that it’s hysterically funny, especially if you’re a fan of the show. I may break down and rent it at some point, especially considering that I’ve seen the cash machine heist a couple of times and I laugh, every single time.

Rather unsurprisingly, the US distributor felt the need to cut a new, American friendly trailer, complete with “announcer voice”.

Trailer Park Boys: The Big Dirty, apparently also renamed Trailer Park Boys: The Movie, will open in limited release on January 25th.

Again for fun, here are both the original Canadian trailer and the new US trailers.

  • It’s All About the Drawing Room

    0

The Duchess of LangeaisOne of my major errors in judgment in 2007 was passing up Jacques Rivette’s The Duchess of Langeais for Catherine Breillat’s The Last Mistress. My dislike for the latter has waned a fair bit since I saw it and thinking back on it I can see where my initial thoughts on Breillat’s film may have been misguided and I look forward to a revisit at some point but I hope to have a chance to see Rivette’s film first.

Based on Honoré de Balzac’s novel, this is the story of star-crossed lovers, a wounded war hero played by Guillaume Depardieu and a coquettish socialite played by Jeanne Balibar, whose romance is played out in the drawing rooms of Restoration Paris. Apparently, the film is pretty talkie but I love these period dramas/romances of high society, especially when the emotions are roped in and “proper” to the period. One of the reasons I had so much dislike for Breillat’s film is that all of its players are loud and obnoxious and thinking back, that may be exactly what she intended hence the need for a second viewing.

The Duchess of Langeais has been picked up by IFC and is scheduled for a limited release starting on February 22nd. Hopefully, this won’t be like François Ozon’s Angel which has been picked up for Canadian distribution by Seville Pictures but is still lacking a release date.

Since I’m at it, here are the trailers for all three films mentioned above.

  • The Bank Job: Statham as a Bank Robber

    2

Right off the bat, Roger Donaldson is not a familiar name but looking back at his filmography I’m surprised that he’s not a name that I recall because he’s directed a bunch of stuff I’ve really enjoyed including 2005′s overly sugarcoated but fun The World’s Fastest Indian, the excellent political thriller Thirteen Days, the bad but fun Species and one of my favorite Tomkat performances Cocktail.

This time around Donaldson is taking on the robberies and in particular, the story of the real life heist of the Baker Street bank in London that resulted in no arrests and no money ever found. Apparently, a government gagging order has kept the story under wraps for years and the film is an attempt to reveal what really happened.

It stars current action main man Jason Statham and Saffron Burrows along with a few other folks I don’t recognize.

Rather unfortunately, the trailer isn’t particularly appealing. It’s all over the place and feels like they’re trying too hard to squeeze in too many aspects of the story. I have a bad feeling this is going to get all convoluted. To boot, though I liked her in Deep Blue Sea, I’m not a fan of Saffron Burrows.

The Bank Job opens on March 7th.

  • Foreign Women’s Lives: Caramel Trailer

    1

In the vein of Pedro Almodóvar’s love of women’s lives and worlds comes Caramel, a Lebanese film about the day-to-day lives of five women living in Beirut.

A fresh rating and loads of positive buzz coming out of the 2007 festival circuit, folks were buzzing about this film towards the end of VIFF and I can see why. It looks like a lighthearted attempt to deal with some serious, and somewhat taboo issues in a fairly conservative country.

Roadside Attractions has picked it up for distribution in North America and the film is scheduled to open in limited release on February 1st. I’d love an opportunity to catchup with this one.

  • The Signal: Fancy New Trailer

    2

Three directors. One vision. One nasty signal that gives you the crazy.

I’m excited. A few other folks around here are excited. Now you can get excited all your own. Just prep your baseball bat.

The Signal opens in limited release on February 22nd.

  • Frontière(s) Coming Complete with NC-17 Rating

    36

Frontieres Movie StillI first heard of French helmer Xavier Gens‘ upcoming horror film when it was announced as one of the selections for the After Dark Horrorfest. Then there was some positive buzz coming out of TIFF’s Midnight Madness but the seller for me was that I enjoyed Gens’ other 2007 release, Hitman.

Now there’s news coming out of the Fangoria caves that Frontière(s)will open on May 2nd with the usually-reserved-for-porn label of NC-17.

I’m assuming that the rating is for the all out violence rather than the sex and frankly, I’m kind of done with torture films like Hostel and Saw but I’m curious to see just how over the top a movie has to be to get that sort of rating and the various reviews I’ve read have been mostly positive.

Check out the apparently newly minted trailer below and an extra teaser clip here.

  • White Noise 2 Trailer: Mediocre Sci-Fi Horror?

    0

T the first installment in this unlikely franchise was pretty bad, though the idea of EVP in and of itself is pretty damned creepy. For me, White Noisedidn’t work primarily because of Michael Keaton’s flat performance but word that number two was coming, complete with hot list big wig Nathan Fillion and the lovely Katee Sackhoff (local sci-fi fandom is abuzz!), I was curious.

Lousy reviews from the film’s UK release stopped a major release this side of the pond but Rogue Pictures feel it’s deserving of at least a DVD release and I can’t say I blame them: with these two actors on board, this is likely to get more than one fan interested.

Sadly, this doesn’t look all that good but then, I’ve seen my share of non-scary horror movies. At least with this one, there’s some other good stuff to look at. Those few who are interested can check it out on DVD tomorrow.

  • Stephen Chow is Back: CJ7 Trailer

    24

CJ7 Movie StillHot on the tracks of Kurt’s recent Finite Focus post on Kung Fu Hustle, comes the trailer for actor/director Stephen Chow’s new film, a comedy titled CJ7.

It’s the story of a Chinese laborer and how life changes when a strange new pet enters his son’s life. I watched the trailer with a WTF look on my face but I did laugh, even if I couldn’t figure out what on earth was going on. Apparently, we’re in for more of Chow’s unique brand of slapstick comedy. I had fun with both Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle so yeah, count me on board for more wacky fun.

According to the official website, the film is scheduled to open on January 11th in North America but I didn’t see it on any of the release schedules so I’m guessing this is a pretty quiet release. You may want to keep an eye out for it at your local arthouse/rep theater.

Thanks to our friends over at Band of Outsiders for the heads up on the trailer.

  • Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale in Snow Angels Trailer

    4

Snow Angels Movie StillOne of the films generating a load of buzz coming out of 2007’s Sundance Festival was David Gordon Green’s new film, a drama titled Snow Angels.

Based on the novel by the same title it is the intertwined story of a number of individuals all dealing with loss of innocence in small town America. Kate Beckinsale and the great Sam Rockwell play a couple dealing with relationship troubles when their daughter goes missing while up-and-comer Michael Angarano is a young man dealing with his own troubled high school relationship who also happens to be involved with Beckinsdale.

The missing girl story is not exactly new and considering how excellent Gone Baby Gone was and how well it was received, I have a feeling this may be scrutinized a little more closely and perhaps even compared but it seems to be a different type of story and from the trailer, I’m interested to see how Green manages what already sounds like a convoluted, multi-character storyline, though its current RT rating of 100% is pretty impressive and suggests that Green may have succeeded. One thing is certain, the performances look to be very good and for once, it looks like Beckinsale is doing more than just being a pretty face. Is that acting I see?!?

Snow Angels opens in limited release on March 7th. You can check out the film’s trailer here.

  • The Counterfeiters: Most Anticipated 2007 Holdover

    4

The Counterfeiters Movie StillMy list of holdovers from 2007 is long. At the top is There Will Be Blood, which doesn’t open locally for another week but along with it are a bunch of others that I missed theatrically and are now on DVD and a few more which played the festival circuit and which I still need to see. Near the top of that list are Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg, a film that Kurt and Colleen share lots of love for, but right up there for me is the German film The Counterfeiters.

Based on the life story of master counterfeiter Salomon Sorowitsch, it focuses on his time in a German concentration camp where he was in charge or running the biggest counterfeit money scam of all times. “Operation Bernhard”, as it was called, was designed to create and flood the Allied countries’ markets, thereby killing their economies and forcing them to pull out of the war.

Flipping through the VIFF preview guide, this was the one film I wanted to see but scheduling didn’t allow for it. Thankfully, Sony Pictures Classics has picked it up for North American distribution. The film has a scheduled release date of February 22nd (NY and LA) and if all goes well, it should open wider come March.

Even though I haven’t seen it yet, I’m confident that this may make the Oscar Foreign Film shortlist but sadly, I won’t be able to see it until after the fact. I can’t complain much, at least I’ll have a chance to see it!

IGN has a load of new pictures from the production and the trailer is below for your viewing pleasure.

  • More Knightley in Costume: The Duchess Teaser

    3

A relatively untried director. An actress that divides audiences. An actor I love. Loads of pretty costumes in what could be a complete disaster of a film and yet, this has potential.

Based on Amanda Foreman’s book, The Duchess chronicles the life of 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, duchess of Devonshire, an ancestor of Princess Diana who also appeared to share Di’s love/hate relationship with the public. Haven’t read the book but my soft spot for period dramas draws me in more often than not and this one may be a surprise. It’s true, Keira Knightley isn’t a particularly loved actress but she’s been good in both of her previous period performances (Pirates franchise aside) and I’m curious to see how she manages here. Not to mention, Ralph Fiennes is always a big draw.

This teaser doesn’t give us much but I’ll admit that I’m more interested in seeing this than The Other Boleyn Girl.

  • Knight Rider Teaser

    1

NBC launched it’s little teaser for its upcoming, TV movie, Knight Rider. It’s a true teaser with not much to look at, but we do get a glimpse at the car, a little bit of the redeveloped music and a quick snippet of K.I.T.’s voice. Here’s the trailer in its YouTube glory:

Mike? Since when did K.I.T. refer to Michael Knight as Mike? Whatever.
