  • First trailer for Catherine Hardwicke’s “Red Riding Hood”

    9

    Red Riding Hood

I was aware that Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood was going to provide a fresh approach to the classic story but I didn’t really give it much thought beyond that. It’s probably best that I didn’t because had I thought about it or read some of the descriptions floating around, I may have been disappointed by the trailer but as it stands, I’m just a little… surprised.

Set in a medieval forest, the film stars Amanda Seyfried as Valerie, a young woman (in a red riding hood) in love with Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) an orphaned woodcutter, but her parents want her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Valerie and Peter plan to run away together but when Valerie’s sister is taken by the werewolf that stalks the woods surrounding the village, their plans are thwarted. So how does the awesome Gary Oldman fit into this picture? He’s the priest/werewolf hunter the town calls on to rid them of the beast. Other notables along for the ride include Lukas Haas, Julie Christie, Virginia Madsen and the fabulous Billy Burke (apparently Hardwicke likes Burke as much as I do).

The trailer features quite a few interesting tidbits, including more than a handful of host of Seyfried looking startled which concerns me a little but then, it’s a trailer and I generally like Seyfried so I’m happy to chalk that up to editing. The most striking aspect of this trailer are the visuals. Now, Hardwicke is recognized for her sense of aesthetic (likely stemming from her previous work as a production designer) but I’m thrilled to see that she’s paired up with award winning cinematographer Mandy Walker who also shot Baz Luhrmann’s gorgeous Australia (review) (and was glaringly overlooked for an Oscar nomination).

I have to admit I’m not expecting much from this story but my inner girl is thrilled by what she sees: supernatural overtones, period, romance. Oh yes, this has my name written all over it.

Red Riding Hood opens March 11, 2011.

Trailer is tucked under the seats but it’s also worth a look in HD over at Apple.

  • The Mechanic Trailer

With Jason Statham, you are pretty well assured you are going to get what you expect. He has been doing the same sort of mid-budget, slick, action vehicles since he jumped ship from Guy Ritchie to Corey Yuen (the Transporter films pretty much define what that for which Statham has been typecast). Here he teams up with Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland to take down the typical ‘bureaucratic gangster with dozens of henchmen.’

That this is a remake of a 1972 Michael Winner Charles Bronson film of the same name, it is kind of inspired in its obviousness, Statham is more or less the 21st century Charlie Bronson. There are many more to go if they get Statham on board with the Death Wish Franchise.

  • Cars 2 Trailer… Sigh

    6

As much of a fan I am of Pixar’s original Cars film (yes, yes, I am in the minority. Everybody hates Cars, blah blah blah), I’ll be the first to admit I have no desire for a sequel or “the further adventures of…” Pixar animation seems to excel at putting together new and original content at every outing. Outside of the Toy Story trilogy they haven’t done a sequel up to this point and frankly I’m not impressed with what I’ve seen so far. And little chirpy birds are also talking about a sequel to my favorite of the Pixar filmery: Monsters, Inc. Ouch.

So off on some super secret spy mission, Mater and Lightning McQueen head to Europe for some shenanigans of cloak and daggery proportions. This sincerely looks like a half effort of straight-to-DVD quality. God, even the opening narration (“from the creators of Wall-e, Up!….” Ugh!). At the same time, people have been saying that for a long time about many a Pixar film just based on the trailers and then are wow’d by what they see on screen.

So while I remain optimistic, I can’t help but not be excited in the least for this next outing. Cars 2 is released in fucking 3D on June 24, 2011. Watch the trailer after the jump: Could this be the first Pixar animation to not be universally hailed? Is this a symptom of the Disney “churn out as many projects as possible” virus? Or am I completely off my rocker and just by the Michael Caine and Helen Mirren factor we’ll all be amused? I doubt it…

  • Battle: Los Angeles [Trailer]

    29

We’ve seen the Monsters on the Skyline. Now it seems Los Angeles must face the onslaught for a third time in six months – though in the trailer it clearly shows that this is a world wide phenomenon.

How the film (Battle: Los Angeles; directed by Jonathan Liebesman) will turn out remains to be seen, but this is a pretty awesome looking trailer. No sound effects or dialogue, just a haunting, robotic-sounding musical queue and imagery of world wide devastation and interplanetary war. It gives off a really great vibe and gets my excitement brewing. I’m not holding my breath for cinematic mastery here, but as of now, this looks pretty killer. It’s also got a cast full of recognizable faces, including Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Aaron Eckhart, Noel Fisher and Michael Peña.

    Take a look…

  • All Stuffed with Fluff… Just the Way We Like It

    12

Well the wonderful thing about Tiggers, is that Tiggers are wonderful things. Their tops are made out of rubber, their bottoms are made out of springs. They’re bouncy bouncy bouncy bouncy, fun fun fun fun fun. But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is that they’re in 2D and in the hands of Disney/Pixar.

Call me a conservative fogey, but I’m super excited for this film. Not only because it recaptures te imagaination of my childhood days that I love so much, but because they didn’t rape said childhood by turning this into a 3D clusterfuck and giving Pooh a NY Yankees cap or Eyore a hip looking tattoo or some such nonsense. Nope. They seem to have kept it just as it should be: in glorious 2D, hand drawn animation with water color backdrops and all the characters just as they were printed on my crib’s mobile.

So it seems the world isn’t going straight to hell in a hand basket afterall. And the best part? Jim Cummings will return to voice Pooh and John Cleese will provide the narration. I think this is possibly more exciting than the prospect of a new Muppet Movie.

  • It’s here! Trailer for Cary Fukunaga’s “Jane Eyre”

    2

Jane Eyre OnesheetIs it spring yet? Can it be spring already? Please? Pretty please?

Yes, I’m begging for spring for good reason. I promise. That reason? Cary Fukunaga’s follow up to Sin Nombre (review). A take on the famous Charlotte Brontë romance. Jane Eyre stars Mia Wasikowska as Jane, the “mousy” governess, and Michael Fassbender as her beloved Rochester along with Judi Dench, Jamie Bell and Sally Hawkins in an assortment of supporting roles.

I was already keen on seeing the film and the release of the gorgeous poster, seen to the right, yesterday peaked my interested and now, quick on the heels of the poster release, we get a trailer for the production which features everything I could have wanted and more. Lots of grey, a little melodrama, a bit of mystery and enough Fassbender in period drab to make me smile from ear to ear.

You’d better believe that Michael O’Connor, who won an Oscar for his costume design in The Duchess (review), will be a front runner yet again in 2011. As for the use of the Goblins’ Suspiria theme at the beginning…an odd but effective touch.

Jane Eyre opens March 11, 2011. Not soon enough.

  • “Ender’s Game” Trailer

    0

Don’t get too excited. It’s just a fan made mash-up, but it’s done well enough that it just has me itching for the real deal. I actually haven’t been following the progress but I know the adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s beloved novel has been in talks on-again, off-again for quite some time. Much like the “Rama” trailer, I guess we’ll settle for this for now. Interesting note that I didn’t see any The Last Starfighter in here. Too obvious?

  • 42nd Street Forever: Volume 1

    1

42nd Street Forever 1 DVD CaseHello everyone. It’s been a while.

Since I last posted on Row Three, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring the wild, crazy world of what’s commonly known as “Grindhouse”, or exploitation, cinema (both terms seem a bit overused nowadays, don’t they?). To this end, I purchased a series of DVDs, released by Synapse Films, titled 42nd Street Forever, which are essentially a collection of trailers from the Grindhouse era (starting in the late 60′s on through to the mid 80′s). It’s a terrific series of DVDs, and I really have a lot of fun watching them. So, as a way of kinda slipping back into things here on Row Three, I thought I’d devote some time to covering each volume of the 42nd Street Forever collection.

Volume 1 contains over 2 hours of trailers, covering a wide range of genres and sub-genres. Needless to say, many of these trailers stretch the boundaries of good taste to their absolute limit (there’s plenty of nudity, graphic violence, and a whole lot of what we’d today term “political incorrectness” packed into these trailers). But let’s be honest: that’s what makes them so much fun!

Now, instead of me just droning on about the various trailers in each series, I thought I’d take full advantage of all the internet has to offer by presenting a few of them, just to give you an idea of what you’d be in for if you chose to check Volume 1 out.

That said, I guess I better start off with the following:

Warning: the trailers presented in this post are of an adult nature, and contain violence, nudity, and sexual situations. By clicking READ MORE below, you are confirming that you are of a proper age to view this material, and are not easily offended by blah blah blah blah blah).

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get started:

  • “No Strings Attached” Trailer

    0

Like it or not, this has the potential to kill any chance of Portman being recognized for her work in Black Swan. I suppose a case could be made for Evolution, but otherwise it seems Reitman hasn’t really done anything worthy or 90 minutes of your time since Ghostbusters in 1984. So I’m not sure why I’m surprised; but this is lame – on so many levels.

  • Trailer: “The Way Back”

    31

This is about as cliché as it can possibly get kids. Peter Weir is notorious for overwrought, dramatic bullshit layered over the top of pretty heavy or epic story lines. The Way Back looks to be no different than the rest; in fact it looks like a prototype of Weir’s M.O. How many times have we seen a prison camp movie with people trying to escape or on the run? Put three zeros behind any digit and I would venture to say that guess would be pretty close to an accurate answer.

Still, if it’s been done a thousand times, there’s usually a reason. Watching human courage battling the odds (as obvious as they may be) still makes for compelling story telling. Drop in a cast of familiar faces that everyone loves (Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess and Saoirse Ronan) and you’ve probably got a critically acclaimed blockbuster on your hands.

The Way Back was scheduled to open in January, but now I guess there will be early screenings in L.A. and New York on December 29th… last minute try for the Oscars anyone? And judging from the subject matter and the straight-up “Hollywoodness” of this trailer, it’s exactly the kind of tripe that Academy eats up. At any rate, the domestic trailer was just dropped by Yahoo!, but there’s an embedded version right here. Just check under the seats…

  • How bad is it really? Trailer for Ondi Timoner’s “Cool It”

    8

    Bjorn Lomborg

Hot on the heels of Mike’s recent “5 Hidden Treasures of 2010″ post in which he highlighted this film, the time seems ripe to highlight the trailer for what certainly looks like one of the must watch documentaries of the year.

The global environmental crisis has, of late, been overshadowed by the financial crisis but that doesn’t mean that docs (and movies) aren’t still being made with an environmental message. What’s sad is that the message is one of doom, gloom and the coming apocalypse. Yes, things are bad, but how bad are they really? Director Ondi Timoner presents another side to the argument by focusing her documentary Cool It on Bjorn Lomborg, an academic and environmental writer who authored the controversial book “The Skeptical Environmentalist.”

Timoner follows Lomborg as he travels the world exploring the real facts and true science of global warming and its impact and the result may not be what we might expect, especially if we buy into the An Inconvenient Truth‘s the sky is falling, end-of-the-world scenario. I can see how some might think that Lomborg is doing a disservice to the push for change but we’re entitled to the truth – or at least both sides of the story.

Mike sings its praises and I love Ondi so this is a no brainer. Cool It opens November 12th.

  • A New Trailer for “Sucker Punch”

    35

“You will need to find five items.” Well, I think I’ve found them: some dragon fire, a little bit of Scott Glenn, exploding Nazi look-a-likes (i.e. nods to steampunk), robots, swordplay in lingerie – all tied together with Led Zeppelin. Upon subsequent viewings I am not much of a fan of 300 and pretty much loathe Watchmen on almost every level; yet consider me along for the ride with Zack Snyder and his Sucker Punch. This newest trailer isn’t a whole lot different than the one we got back in July, but this one is about twice as long and we now have a bit more of an idea of what the storyline is along with why and how it is being told. There is also a lot more guns, explosions and robots being vertically split in half.

For elaborate CGI fan-service, the trailer is tucked under the seat.
