  • Choke Onesheet

    9

Haven’t read the book, don’t know anything about the story but I do know this comes from the same guy that wrote Fight Club. How do I know that you ask? It’s on the poster.

Can’t say I’m all that impressed though I do love the colours, but I think Andrew likes this one – just a hunch.

  • Ashes of Time Redux (One Sheet)

    Ashes of Time One Sheet

There is surprisingly little of substance out of Cannes regarding the redux version of Wong Kar-Wai’s Ashes of Time Redux. Wkw’s original version never got the kind of love that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon did despite Ashes of Time riding the Hong Kong invasion back in the mid 1990s. It was the first modern star-studded high-brow art-wuxia film (The original template being perhaps King Hu’s 1969 A Touch of Zen), and has languished unloved on one of the worst collection of DVD encodes this side of Raise the Red Lantern. I mean, the copy I have looks like a 3rd generation VHS dub. Perhaps that is why there is not any in depth comparisons made between versions (compared to say Apocalypse Now), or maybe melancholy and brooding martial art epics do not get folks fired up when it shows up against the Indy IV juggernaut.

If Sony Pictures does not put this in the local art-house cinemas (Supposedly this fall), the brand-spankin’ shiny new DVD cannot arrive soon enough.

  • Sweet One Sheet. The German poster for The Happening

    1

We do like our One Sheets around here. While this could have easily passed as a poster for Postal (as in the 1990s video game, not the soon-to-be-barely-released Uwe Boll joint), I like the Germans emphasizing the body count for what promises to be M. Night’s most graphic film to date.

  • Coco Chanel Poster

    4

First look at the marketing poster for the upcoming biopic on famous designer, Gabrielle Chanel (Coco). While I’m not a big fan of the traditional biopics, I always look forward to another French film featuring the lovely Tautou. Setting that aside, if we can get more original work along the lines of Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There which focussed on the legend of Bob Dylan and was one of the best movies of the year, another biopic of a personality that I don’t even have a particular interest in might be a good idea.

But really, this is just an excuse for me to post another picture of Audrey Tautou.

Synopsis courtesy of worstpreviews: In an orphanage, silently standing next to a perfectly made bed, is a frail and slender ten year old girl with thick black hair. Gabrielle Chanel, known as Coco, and her many lives. The story of the path taken by Coco from her obscure beginnings to the blinding lights of Paris.

  • Glorious My Winnipeg Onesheet – And I Mean GLORIOUS

    4

I questioned it at first simply because it doesn’t look quite right but it comes from a reputable source, Cinematical, and it does look like the kind of poster that should be used to announce the coming of Guy Maddin’s latest work – the fantastical My Winnipeg.

Here it is (click for super mother load sized version):

    My Winnipeg Onesheet

Still no trailer for the film which apparently opens at the IFC Centre on June 13th, but I did find a recently posted Tribeca interview with Maddin which includes snippets of footage from the film. That short video is tucked under the seat!

  • Batman Begins (his war on Terror) One Sheet

    4

It is poster day here at Row Three, and yes, this one bounced around the web yesterday, and furthermore, personally, I do not have a lot of interest in the continuation/re-branding of the Batman Movie Franchise. But give credit for this particular edgy One-Sheet design that echos 9/11 in both the visual imagery and the ominous tag-line, “Welcome to a World Without Rules“.

If Batman desires to be the comic book mascot of our vigilante/private-enterprise-goes-to-war age, then this is the poster to do it. Co-incidentally the recent War Inc. also makes light of events much more recent. I hesitate to bring up the ‘too soon’ debate that surfaces with so many things in cinema when entertainment and tragedy collide (Batman Begins also has the Heath Ledger factor going for it). I did very much like Spielberg’s holocaust and 9/11 imagery and the edge it injected into the War of the Worlds remake; the 9/11 factor made the most of Cloverfield, not to mention the still unreleased in these parts Spanish horror film [*REC] which took the famous 9-11 documentary as an aesthetic template.

  • Wanted: Originality!

    9

We do like talking about one-sheet design around here. And I’m a few days late with this one (I should really stop by Gus’ Movie Poster Addict more often). But today I saw the black & white One Sheet for Wanted featuring Angelina Jolie as ‘The Thinker’ with a fire-arm. What struck me at first glance was how similar this was to one of Tartan’s designs for the American release of Sympathy For Lady Vengeance. I do not believe the Lady Vengeance was ever used in the final marketing, as Tartan ultimately went with a different design (note Lady Vengeance was tragically unsuccessful at the Box Office, not even getting a quarter of a million dollars in ticket sales) although the image was put out publicly to get fan input on how to market the film.

So, is this a rip off, a homage, or a co-incidence?

  • Nicolas Cage is Back?

    7

This is really Kurt’s territory, but Asian directors Danny and Oxide Pang newest film entitled Bangkok Dangerous is slated for release this coming August. You might’ve seen a bit of the the Pang Brother’s other work in the original version of The Eye and its sequel; as well as quite a scary, surreal, but compelling little story about a novelist’s nightmare, translating into a pro-life message, movie entitled Re-Cycle.

At any rate, the newest from the Pang brothers bring aboard Nicolas Cage as an international hitman who falls for a local woman while in Bangkok on a job. I pulled down the poster that was just released and am posting it here for your viewing pleasure or displeasure. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Nicolas Cage and his pores:

  • New Indiana Jones 4 Poster

    10

Here’s the newest poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, by legendary poster artist Drew Struzan. It’s consistent with the feel of the older Indy posters, which is definitely a plus. Thanks to Movieweb for the heads up.

Big Trouble - Alamo Promo One SheetIt is One Sheet day here at Row Three. I was over at the mighty fine Movie Poster Addict, and there was a tribute to Tyler Stout, the designer for the brilliant Hell Ride One Sheet who just happened also designed a brand new One Sheet for the recent AICN Butt Numb-a-thon Festival back at the beginning of December. I don’t know how I missed this when it was new, but since Big Trouble in Little China is a bit of a bond between many of the Rowthree writers. Let’s face it, as a genre-mashing goes, this movie is canon.

You know what Jack Burton always says…what the hell.
