  • Cinecast Episode 238 – Just the Tip, Please.

    51

We’ve got entirely too much content to squeeze into one single episode, and this one is busting at the seams. We kick things off with the Batman 3 Prologue before moving into our Top 5 guy performances. Ghost Protocol sees the Mission Impossible franchise (along with The Dark Knight Rises) usher IMAX 2D back into the conversation. Classically staged action set-pieces abound, and Kurt, Andrew and Gamble dig Brad Bird’s style, even if there is a lament for the Bad Robot momentum over brains approach to the actual plot and characters. More contentious is the David Fincher The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which also tastes great, and is also less filling. The boys parse exactly what is Lisbeth Salander, a self-sustaining superhero, or a broken lesbian looking for a conservative/traditional relationship and ponder if handsome and meticulous is enough to praise what is ultimately a middle-of-the-road Fincher joint. As there is a 20 car traffic-jam of new releases over the lead-up to Christmas, we spend some time with other titles floating in the multiplexes: Margin Call, The Sitter, Sherlock Holmes 2 and Tarsem’s Immortals (and Gamble goes gaga over the latter two titles.) The Watchlist, tangents on RedBox, and more homoerotic tension than you can shake a stick at, round out the show in what is, even by our standards, one of epic proportions.

  • Mamo #232: The Girl with the Mamo Tattoo

    12

There is no such girl. But wouldn’t it be lovely if there were? We look at David Fincher’s mega-zeitgeisty adaptation of the biggest book in the world, before turning our gaze to the biggest screens in the world and their recent, thunderous triumph with a certain impossible mission.

  • Mamo #231: Bane Says What?

    41

The Boys of Mamo head to the multiplexes to take in the first six minutes of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and on the way, chit-chat about annual critics’ lists, and Butt-Numb-A-Thon, and big burly men in masks with unintelligible voices. Sort of like us.

  • Mamo #230: Midnight Snack

    10

Special guest star Colin Geddes, Midnight Madness programmer of the Toronto International Film Festival, whisks us away to a secret location to drink old-timey drinks and gab about his cinematic life and times in Toronto. With bonus guest: Our mysterious benefactor! Pull up a stool!

  • Cinecast Episode 237 – One T or Two?

    56

Well, Gamble’s Back. But after the Thanksgiving Weekend blow-out there is precious little in the way of new releases, making this show a Mega-sized “The Watch List” episode. Before we go there, we delve into our favourite female performances of 2011 (of all shapes and sizes.) One small observation: We talk a lot of documentaries this episode, and go over a lot of TV series; particularly Matt who was laid up with a sports injury for over three weeks and watched a metric tonne of TV/film/etc. The latest from Errol Morris, Werner Herzog, and another go around with Bellflower. Take it away Gamble.

  • After the Credits Episode 106: Whistler Film Festival 2011 Preview

    0

    Did someone say Whistler?!?

The festival actually kicks off today with an opening night screening of Jason Reitman’s Young Adult but we, yes, I said we, are way too cool for Diablo Cody. Colleen (Mary Ostler Wood Butchery & Other Stuff) and I have been talking this festival up so much over the last year that we’ve even convinced Dale (Digital Doodles), among a few others, to join us for the fun. The line-up is spectacular (Dangerous Method, Manborg among others), the stars many (Michael Shannon and Jay Baruchel are both being honoured) and the booze will flow. Oh yes, there will be parties and I may actually make it out to one of them this year. Listen in for our rambling take on this year’s festival and stay tuned for a post fest wrap in a few days time! Full festival details by clicking on the banner below. It’s not too late to join the fun!

  • Mamo #229: Mugo Mamo Muppet Mo

    13

Yanksgiving and Black Friday are squarely behind us, and the tripartite battle between November’s family films (and Breaking Dawn) is done! Let’s look at The Muppets, and Hugo, in an all-new podtacular Mamo.

  • Cinecast Episode 236 – Ocular Coitus

    21

While our friend Matt Gamble is still on the mend (not from a boating accident), Kurt and Andrew grew a bit tired of executing these shows together all alone and reached towards the heavens above for this episodes guest host: Aaron Hartung (aka the dude who lives upstairs). Aaron also happens to work for the best cinema chain in town, Landmark Theaters; not only does he seem to know his movie stuff, he’s got a voice for radio to boot.

We missed last week’s episode due to other obligations and illness, there is a LOT to get to this week. From Lars von Trier’s visually rich disaster/depression epic to the long awaited new Alexander Payne film (it has indeed been six years) we cover your auteur cinema-making-guys. But wait, there’s more: Fifties sex icons, furry-little-singing-nostalgia-engines(tm) and a whole lot of early cinema history enshrined in a Martin Scorsese ‘kids film.’ Enjoy this double-digest episode of the show: It’s time to start the music, it’s time to light the lights, it’s time to talk death, depression and the urgent need for knowing our history on the Cinecast tonight.

  • After the Credits Episode 105: December Preview

    0

And we’re back! It’s been a particularly busy few months but the crew, Dale (Digital Doodles), Colleen (Mary Ostler Wood Butchery & Other Stuff) and I have finally found the time to gather at the new Burnaby studio to record a show. December has much to offer, including a load of Oscar bait, but among the dramatic gems there are also a few mindless bits of entertainment and at least one title that left us scratching our heads. Spielberg… what are you thinking? Listen on for all of the juicy details and stay tuned for another show (it’s true, you can hold your breath if you like but it’s completely unnecessary) in the next few days. Did someone say Whistler?!?

  • Movie Club Podcast #23: Crash and Crash

    0

The FilmJunk crew has bowed out this week; but do not fret. Other exciting guests have entered the fray to help make the Movie Club Podcast go back to what it was originally intended to be: an always rotating panel of movie buffs and bloggers. This go-round sees the likes of RowThree favorites Ryan McNeil of The Matinee and Jim Laczkowski from The Director’s Club Podcast. Which Crash is your crash? Are you a lover of both, dismissive of both or somewhere in between. The sexual nuances of David Cronenberg’s 1996 Cannes award winner are teased out, while the subtleties of Paul Haggis’ Oscar winner are actively searched for. It’s a Thanksgiving Crashtacular, your mileage may vary!

The Movie Club is as much for the listeners as it is the contributors. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section over at the Movie Club Page. (Comments are turned off on this post.) The Next Episode will be recorded probably sometime in January (maybe, but do not hold us to that; regularity is not our strong suit!) and the films on discussion will be Paris, Texas and Southland Tales.

  • Mamo #228: Much Ado, Take Two

    12

Failure and calamity repeatedly confounded our efforts to record this show, but no longer! Mamo 228 is finally here, discussing (in no particular order) Joss Whedon, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Snow White, Snow White, The Hunger Games, Breaking Dawn, Norm Wilner’s readership, the Row Three commenters, the Internet in general, Happy Feet Two, The Muppets, Steve Whitmire, and Jim Henson’s soul. If we’re still alive when you’re listening to this, the show was a success.

  • Cinecast Episode 235 – Clint’s Notes

    30

Our quickest show in some time: Gamble mangled his ankle and is on the DL and Kurt is suffering from an energy sapping cold. But we soldier on folks, we soldier on. Like good little Cineastes, we check out the yearly offering from Clint Eastwood. This time it is a puffy Leonardo DiCaprio making out with the man in the bad latex, Armie Hammer (sans CGI twin) across the annals of twentieth century America in J. Edgar **SPOILERS**. This segues into our first “VS.” segment, where we debate “Eastwood the Actor” vs. “Eastwood the Director”, and struggle with the thin line in between those distinctions. We also check back in with quality Brit-Creature-Feature Attack The Block **SPOILERS**. In The Watch List we get our music on with Bill Condon’s Dreamgirls and Jean-Marc Vallée’s Café de flore. A little bit of philosophical waxing on the nature of the Space and Time rounds out the show.
