  • Cinecast Episode 172 – pixaR

    13

So sedate you could get a lullaby out its dulcet tones, this episode of the Cinecast has the podcasting players considering death and slavery and obsolescence (and Easter Eggs) in the wake of Toy Story 3. (*SPOILERS*) Gamble comes up with his best idea yet: A hard “R” Pixar animated film. The debate ensues whether it should be an adaptation (Watership Down or Animal Farm?) or a straight up original War film a la CatShit1. I hope Emeryville is listening. Jonah Hex is thrown to the wolves – particularly for wasting such an interesting supporting cast. James Mangold’s star vehicle Knight and Day is previewed as being a fun popcorn flick with a saggy final act. Also Day & Night, the Pixar short, (but not Day For Night the Truffaut film or the Curitz film Day and Night or terrorist bombing flick Day Night Day Night) is talked about, confused yet? Andrew takes back his love for Public Enemies and lavishes it instead on Soderbergh & Damon’s pontificating corporate shlub in The Informant. He is diggin naked running men and gory kills from the natives in the Criterion release of Naked Prey. Kurt finally finds a fairly consistent stretch of Lost (Season 3.5 *SPOILERS*) and is in danger of flirting with satisfaction in the show which is eating up ridiculous amounts of his time. Finally, we attempt reader mail to mixed results.

Waxing (on, and off) nostagic this week with glossy summer product. Two remakes from the heady cheese days of the 1980s dominated the multiplex last weekend: Will Smith Jr. in The Karate Kid and flying tanks in The A-Team. Contrary to what we say in the show it does not get very “spoilerific” at all; if you are over 30, these two films are more or less beyond that (your mileage may vary). Gamble has a quick take on the upcoming weekends behemoth Toy Story 3, from the perspective of someone (perhaps the only one) who didn’t like Toy Story 2. Kurt talks at length on The Duplass’ brother’s Cyrus which also opens this weekend in a few cities. Furthermore, in an ongoing behind-the-curve look at pop-cultural phenomenon LOST, Kurt continues to moan about the bad drama and stalling nature of the narrative, but does praise the heck out of the Season 2 closer and the Season 3 opener (there are *spoilers* ahoy in that conversation, be warned). Rounding out the show are DVD picks, a few other tangents – anyone up for Chinese cultural imperialism, or Communism vs. Fascism in 80s trash? How to parse TV awards shows? Ron Mann’s choice of having comic book authors read lengthy portions of their books on screen? Fashion Fan Boys? Oh, and another round of the piracy, file sharing, copyright debate ensues.

  • Cinecast Episode 170 – There is Smelting

    59

A lengthy show this week, mainly due to Kurt finally fulfilling his promise to Andrew to start watching TVs LOST. If you are bored to tears by Lost talk, skip the first half hour of the show. If you are a fan or aficionado, there is a newbies (Spoilerific) take on the first (and a bit of the second) Season. The main review, and a wonderful three-way discussion is had, is Vincenzo Natali’s Splice. There is lots of love for the Cronenbergian slash Frankenstein’s Monster type tale, but also some criticisms. Matt managed to catch up with Get Him To The Greek and offers his thoughts, wherein a Rose Byrne love-in ensues (who knew she was Aussie?) Kurt caught an advance screening of Sundance winner Winter’s Bone and agrees that it completely lives up to the hype (John Hawkes and Jennifer Lawrence are both revelations). Finally, Matt teases Andrew and Kurt with some thoughts on Mr. T and welding montages in the new A-Team movie. Andrew espouses on his theory why Pixar’s Up is a lot like Death Proof and there is some tangenting on Jackie Brown. DVD picks and much, much more.

  • Cinecast Episode 169 – Stone Dildos

    26

Today we are joined by Killerfilm’s Serena Whitney to pontificate on the the latest multiplex horror film, Sex And The City 2. Matt Gamble chimes in with the herding of the drunken and frocked chattel to sold out screenings. Mucho negativity ensues. We also revisit The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, to delve into the films shortcomings and another one of those ‘book to movie adaptation’ discussions. Lots of Movies We Watched, spanning Norm MacDonald‘s post-SNL flop to an obscure French New Wave release. There is also a smack-down of Andrew on his flippant dismissal of The Iron Giant and a fairly lengthy tangent on George A. Romero‘s filmography and orbiting remakes. The whole crew gives their DVD picks, which turns into a limbo game of trying to dodge the slew of Clint Eastwood releases coinciding with his 80th Birthday. Enjoy.

  • Mamo #169: Mamo No Guillermo

    2

Memorial Day weekend comes and goes like the rest of May, with an underwhelming thudding noise. Then, to cap it off there are major changes revealed for the most important fantasy adaptation in the history of filmed entertainment. So we thought we ought to do a show. Also, there’s some more LOST spoilerage near the end, so be forewarned.

  • Cinecast 168 – The Hacksaw Dilemma

    10

Revenge is a dish best served cold. So claims an old Klingon proverb. While probably not technically accurate as to the origin of the phrase, it is apropos of this weeks cinecast. It would perhaps be even more appropriate to say that revenge is a dish served often, and in a versatile and diverse number of ways! Even though that does not exactly roll off the tongue – we present a couple of lists to prove it. Tying in with this weeks top ten is our full (and shockingly spoiler free!) review of the Michael Caine revenge drama, Harry Brown. Though there are only two of us to go back and forth this week, we still find some DVDs to discuss and maybe grump out a bit at dismal outlook on our near future at the multiplex.

  • Mamo #168: Lost Our Lost

    12

In which the Matts depart from moviedom to mark the passing of the television series of the decade.

  • Mamo #167: Nottingwho?

    4

THWACK! That is the sound of an arrow, not so much hitting its target as the next tree over. Robin Hood in theatres, and the reactions are varied. Tons of money overseas, not so much money here, and wasn’t this thing called Nottingham once upon a time? Mamo investigates!

  • Cinecast Epsiode 167 – The Quick and The Head

    35

Nottingham and its denizens are a changed place. For the better or worse is the question which our bickering board of bloggers hash out to vastly different conclusions. Fortunately the consensus for movie of the week is The Good, The Bad and the Weird; of which we all agree is awesome in a Big Trouble in Little China meets Raiders of the Lost Ark by way of the Leone Spaghetti Westerns. Andrew and Matt also got to catch a screening of Spike Jonze’ short, I’m Here on the big screen. DVD releases this week are slim pickings, so instead we take a little more time with the recent viewings segment including Gary King’s latest drama, as well as the 2009 Bill Kunsler documentary, a little tangent on animation and dubbing Miyazaki films, in particular Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and a minute or two on Zombieland… which still, more or less, sucks.

  • Cinecast Episode 166 – A Heavy Maritime Layer

    46

Please give a warm welcome to Dr. James Gillham from Wherethelongtailends.com for providing a counter to our generally favorable views of The Human Centipede (SPOILERS!) – and not always fun being the one guy in the room willing to defend Scarlett Johansson – obviously stemming from a quick review from Matt Gamble on the deep existentialism of Iron Man 2. We get back into the habit of tangenting away from the focus which usually leads to good things but here ultimately ends up going back to the Star Wars saga (yes, again). Retro Hot Docs titles are finally caught up with as well as some (un)decent exploitation films of years past and coming soon. Our DVD picks this week are fairly unanimous, but give way to a nice argument about fat Alec Baldwin vs. skinny Alec Baldwin. Enjoy with a smile.
