  • Complete Metropolis Blu-ray DELAYED

    5

This week’s DVD of the week on the Cinecast would’ve (should’ve) been a no-brainer choice this week. The complete Metropolis was to make it’s first-time appearance on your home television screens as of today. There is a print traveling the country and I for one am pretty stoked to finally see this thing, but it looks like I’ll have to wait just… wait for it… another whole week. The excruciating seven more days Kino is forcing us to wait is due to some sort of coding:

[Metropolis] was supposed to be locked to region A. However, due to a miscommunication, the first pressing of Kino’s release was not region coded. Kino Video has admitted the error and assured that future pressings will be region-A locked.

Insert discussion on bullshit region coding here if you must. Whatever. I’m so excited to see Metropolis in its (almost) entirety I can hardly stand it. More than 25 minutes of footage has been reintegrated into Metropolis, from single shots to whole sub-plots and action sequences. The result is a film that’s finally as coherent as its images are iconic. And from what I’ve read, the Blu-ray transfer and ensuing extras are immaculate.

  • Colin Farrell: Get Your Ass to Mars

    0

Colin FarrellThis household (at least the female contingent) is a happy one this morning with news that Colin Farrell has been asked by Sony Pictures to play the lead role in Columbia Pictures remake of Verhoeven’s 80′s new classic, Total Recall.

Here’s a case where I can see the argument for a remake. Sure the original is a fun ride with some memorable moments in a pretty interesting story originally penned by master, Phillip K. Dick. At the same time, it feels a little dated watching now.

What concerns me isn’t the prospect of a remake (which I think might be pretty good time at the theater). What concerns me is that they’ve brought on board some pretty mediocre (at best) filmmakers for this reimagining: Len Wiseman to direct. Notable for such films as Live Free, Die Hard and Underworld I & II. To write the script Sony has hired good ol’ Kurt Wimmer. Yeah, the awesomeness of Salt, Law Abiding Citizen and The Recruit is still rattling around in my head.

Other interesting casting rumors for the Schwarzenegger role were Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy. All three of these prospects sound interesting to me, but with this assortment of film makers at the reins, as of now I don’t hold out much hope or have much expectation; which is a real shame since I think this could’ve been a pretty heady and wonderment-filled project.

  • First poster and synopsis for Steve McQueen’s “Shame”

    4

Not so long ago it was announced that for his follow-up to the excellent Hunger (review) English director Steve McQueen would be re-teaming with Michael Fassbender for a relationship drama titled Shame.

There was little more to go on when the project was first announced but Collider has uncovered a few more details about the plot which doesn’t really give us much more than what we already knew, and a beautiful one sheet.

The official synopsis, still vague, reads:

Brandon is a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After his wayward younger sister moves into his apartment, Brandon’s world spirals out of control.

From director Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.

I’m much more intrigued by this one-sheet which is a little mysterious and a touch creepy. I can’t wait to see some video from the film – Shame is high on my list of titles to see in 2011.

  • How bad is it really? Trailer for Ondi Timoner’s “Cool It”

    8

    Bjorn Lomborg

Hot on the heels of Mike’s recent “5 Hidden Treasures of 2010″ post in which he highlighted this film, the time seems ripe to highlight the trailer for what certainly looks like one of the must watch documentaries of the year.

The global environmental crisis has, of late, been overshadowed by the financial crisis but that doesn’t mean that docs (and movies) aren’t still being made with an environmental message. What’s sad is that the message is one of doom, gloom and the coming apocalypse. Yes, things are bad, but how bad are they really? Director Ondi Timoner presents another side to the argument by focusing her documentary Cool It on Bjorn Lomborg, an academic and environmental writer who authored the controversial book “The Skeptical Environmentalist.”

Timoner follows Lomborg as he travels the world exploring the real facts and true science of global warming and its impact and the result may not be what we might expect, especially if we buy into the An Inconvenient Truth‘s the sky is falling, end-of-the-world scenario. I can see how some might think that Lomborg is doing a disservice to the push for change but we’re entitled to the truth – or at least both sides of the story.

Mike sings its praises and I love Ondi so this is a no brainer. Cool It opens November 12th.

The Trailer is tucked under the seat.

  • Tarsem’s Snow White

    1

Everyone ready or excited for a whole lot of ‘fairy tale’ films after the monster success of Disney/Burton’s Alice in Wonderland? Catherine Breillat’s Sleeping Beauty (Marina’s Review) has been touring the festival circuit this year, and there are Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretal pictures in development, currently.

Now, Tarsem Singh can split audiences, one has only to listen to our lengthy Movie Club Podcast on The Fall to get the idea, but the man has a knack for visual flair, and that is just what your big budget fairy tale movie needs to market to the masses, and I’m sure that is what Universal is aiming for. Singh is currently working on the post-production of Montreal-shot big special effects extravaganza, Immortals, which is set for release in 2011.

Are you ready for a lot more Tarsem? Are you interested to see the man tackle the Brothers Grimm with Snow White?

  • Just in time for Christmas: Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-Ray Titles

    3

Sin City Steelbook Blu-Ray CoverWith Blu-Ray only recently making an appearance in my household, we’ve been reluctant to re-purchase some of the titles we already had on DVD but once in a while, something comes along to encourage a re-purchase. Add the upcoming holiday season in the near future and there are definitely a number of titles in this new Alliance release that I’d be more than thrilled to add to my collection.

The Steelbook Series features 12 titles (two of which, No Country for Old Men and Gangs of New York, were release on September 28th), most of which worthy or a purchase, particularly if you have, for whatever reason, not yet added these titles to your collection.

The limited edition Steelbooks go on sale on November 2nd and “feature never before released artwork” along with all of the goodies that were included in the previously released DVD versions of the films. As for the titles, they’re a pretty impressive list of flicks, with the exception of one (how did Law Abiding Citizen make it on the list with the rest of these titles?), the majority of which could make my Christmas wish list.

The titles are Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2, Sin City, Memento, A History of Violence, Traffic, Hot Fuzz, Shawn of the Dead, Pan’s Labyrinth and the aforementioned Law Abiding Citizen.

    I love the holidays.

  • Chaos Reigns in Lars Von Trier’s Sci-Fi Downer ‘Melancholia’

    5

    Melancholia

So how does one follow-up a film as grand and grotesque, praised and despised as Antichrist? If you are Lars Von Trier, you think bigger: world annihilation, and that’s just the prologue.

With his next project, Melancholia, Von Trier is taking a stab at hard sci-fi (if Antichrist was his ode to Tarkovsky, Melancholia may very well be his Solaris). Few details are known about the story aside from Von Trier’s announcement that there will be “no more happy endings!” Cheating the audience of any apocalyptic suspense to the proceedings, Melancholia reportedly starts with the destruction of the world only to work backwards and show characters on the eve of their inevitable demise. Said to be a cold war fears revision of the filmmakers’ own childhood anxieties, this bleak entry into the doomsday canon is sure to be as uncompromising as his previous film. Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg (seriously, how much agony can one woman endure?!) and Kirsten Dunst (huh?) as sisters, and Kiefer Sutherland, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgard and Stellan Skarsgard as whomever else.

After Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life and Todd Field’s Blood Meridian this is easily one of my most anticipated films in the coming years.

  • More than just ads. VIFF 2010 takes marketing to the next level

    0

    VIFF 2010 Banner

Every year I take great joy in sharing with our readers a slice of what we VIFF attendees get to enjoy for two weeks in the form of festival trailers. Though the trailers are always fantastic (have a taste with 2008s attendee reels and 2009s batch of odd yet very real movie moments) the complaints are always the same, especially from folks that see a lot of films: there aren’t enough of them and we have to see the same one over and over again!

    Not this year.

Oh no. Always ones to push the envelope, VIFF is going all out this year. The folks at TBWA who are behind the great material from the previous years, decided that they were going to do things a little differently this year by creating their own short film. Titled The Warden, the film has been divided into 16 parts and each part will play during one day of the festival. At the end of the fest, attendees will have seen one full short film. Convinced that festival audiences are smart cookies, TBWA has also revealed that the parts will not be shown in order and the first scene, which is already online, is actually the closing scene of the film.

So what happens if you miss a day or two? You can catch up. The instalments will be available for viewing at http://www.thewardensixteen.com/.

Now, I can’t tell you what the short is about because I don’t know but if the first clip is any indication, it’s not going to be a laughing matter.

  • Sally Menke RIP

    3

Editor Sally Menke, long-time collaborator with Quentin Tarantino, was found dead in Beachwood Canyon, LA this morning. She was reportedly out hiking with her dog and sources suspect she got disoriented and collapsed due to the extreme heat experienced on Monday in the region, sending her off the edge of the ravine where her body was found. She was only 56.

She had edited all of Tarantino’s films since Reservoir Dogs and had earned two Oscar nominations through the collaboration. She avoided the limelight, but was well loved for her work with the director. She said of her profession, “editors are the quiet heroes of movies and I like it that way. We have a very private relationship with our directors, mostly conducted in very dark rooms.”

An editor myself and great admirer of her work, my condolences go out to her friends and family.

  • Polanski on to Green Pastures…

    PERFECTION

This news absolutely just made my day. According to reports around the web today, notrious (and amazing) director, Roman Polanski, has nabbed some names for his upcoming film, God of Carnage that absolutely make me wanna sing with joy.

Four Oscar winners will come together with this Oscar winning director. Ready? Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and Matt Damon. Presumably these four will come together to form two couples in the premise of this adaptation from an apparently fairly popular Broadway show:

Yasmina Reza’s play follows two sets of parents whose worlds collide when their sons get into a fight at school. The meeting at school goes awry when the couples begin attacking each other’s parenting skills, and eventually marital problems come under scrutiny.

Currently in pre-prod., filming is set to begin sometime next year. Obviously it will have to be filmed in Europe because… well you know, but the setting within the world of the story will still be set in Brooklyn, NY. Should be interesting.

This movie just raced to the #1 position of my most anticipated film of the next however long it takes to get here. Thoughts?

  • On the Road with Andrew’s iPod Making Triumphant Return to the Cinecast. Probably.

    22

I used to do a segment on the Cinecast entitled “on the road with Andrew’s iPod” in which I reviewed a different, usually shitty, movie each week that I had watched on my iPod while driving or bussing it to work. That segment was usually met with either a lot of head shaking or laughs or both. Since I’ve quit my job where I got the free digital copies, that segment has pretty much disappeared. But the good news is that segment might be coming back!

If the rumors are true, I’ll be able to pick up an iPhone this January with my Verizon account and with that comes the new feature of streaming movies from Netflix on their instant watch function and the brand new Netflix app released by Apple. The new app was announced in June and went live today! There’s a quick video at the previous link showing a little bit of how it looks, but if you haven’t seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yet, maybe it best to avoid!

The new iTunes available app costs zero and will work for anyone with an iPod touch or an iPhone and a Netflix account with at least the $8.99 package or higher. I’m pretty stoked about this news. Not everyone is as excited about it as I am though…
