The Movie Club returns! Sean and Jay from Filmjunk join Andrew & Kurt from Rowthree (Marina sadly was a victim of the Vancouver Transit System, and Omar was off crimefighting or some-such-superhero activity.) Episode #14 tackles two film involving serial killers and the media, first up with Oliver Stone’s 1994 arthouse-exploitation fusion Natural Born Killers, followed up by Andrew Dominick’s launching of Eric Bana as an A-List star internationally via Australia’s strangest and most public killer, Chopper.

One of our most convivial shows, don’t let the lack of disagreement amongst the converstation deter you, it allows for more time to get into the nitty gritty and the personal tangents around the films.

    Enjoy.

Comments are turned off on this post, so go over to THE MOVIE CLUB PODCAST site and listen or comment there. The upcoming Episode #15 will feature discussion on Spielberg’s A.I. and Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness. We leave it up to you to figure out the thematic connection between the two. Get watching, and vote in the poll on the sidebar for possible films in Episode #16.

    Ripley

An exciting and a little more upbeat (despite its epic run time) movie club hits the fiber optics today as the fanboys and fan girls tackle all four of the notorious ALIEN films in Meeting #13.

All six of the regulars weren’t about to miss this opportunity to talk about one of the more iconic and loved franchises of all time and the intricacies of facehuggers:
    Sean from Filmjunk
    Jay from The Documentary Blog
    Omar from Twitch
    and
RowThree usuals: Andrew, Marina and Kurt.

After listening and joining in the discussion, you might as well get started with some media driven, psychotic killers and prison inmate badasses in preparation for Episode #14, in which we’ll be discussing the crassness of Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers and Andrew Dominic’s Chopper.

  • The Movie Club Podcast Episode #12: My Own Private Idaho & 10 Things I Hate About You

    movieclub12

It has been more than the usual span of time, but several of the regulars managed to get together and record the latest edition of Movie Club Podcast last week. Episode #12 has a smaller, more intimate 4 person panel including Sean from Filmjunk, along with Andrew, Marina and Kurt from Row Three. We talked about two loose adaptations of Shakespeare from the 1990s, both of which featured potentially house-hold name actors that went on to drug overdoes in their youth. 10 Things I Hate About You and Gus Van Sant‘s My Own Private Idaho provoked somewhat similar reactions, yet we turn over the details of those opinions and facts in a variety of ways.

(Note comments are closed on this post, please post comments and discussion over at The Movie Club Podcast website). And vote for episode #14 using the side poll.

And warm up your Xenomorph and break out your DVD box sets, for in April with episode #13 we are tackling the entire ALIEN QUADRILOGY. Different versions, director’s cuts, and all.

  • The Movie Club Podcast Episode #11: Night of the Creeps & Gremlins 2

    0

Here is a weekend treat: The latest Movie Club Podcast is now online. Join a smattering of the regular crew: Jay & Sean from Filmjunk, Omar “Swarez” from Twitch, and Andrew & Kurt from Row Three. (Tragically, Marina was a victim of the Vancouver transit gremlins (or was it creeps?) and was unable to join. Either way we munched on two delicious little genre-mashers that blend horror and comedy with just about everything under the sun: Fred Dekker‘s slightly difficult to find 80′s genre-bender Night of the Creeps and Joe Dante‘s dada-ist Looney Tunes inspired sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

(Note comments are closed on this post, please post comments and discussion over at The Movie Club Podcast website).

Join us in the new year when we plan to talk two quite different ‘youth flicks’: The updated Shakespearean high-school movie 10 Things I Hate About You, and Gus Van Sant‘s My Own Private Idaho.

    Movie Club Podcast

The latest Movie Club Podcast is now online. Omar “Swarez” Hauksson from Twitch, Sean, Jay and special guest Reed Farrington from Filmjunk and myself (the lone Row Three’r with Andrew prepping for Toronto After Dark and Marina recovering from VIFF) discuss Richard Fleisher‘s post apocalyptic science fiction classic Soylent Green and Michael Mann‘s whistle-blower drama The Insider.

    Movie Club Episode 10

Also, to get started early for the upcoming episode #11 (hey, they are both great Halloween flicks) we will be looking at Fred Dekker‘s slightly difficult to find 80′s genre-bender Night of the Creeps and the rapidly gaining cult-status Gremlins 2: The New Batch, in which Joe Dante throws the sappy Chris Columbus writing style of the first one out the window and does whatever the fuck he feels like doing. Be sure to vote at the site for Episode #11′s films in the poll at the sidebar. (Note comments are closed on this post, please post comments and discussion over at The Movie Club Podcast website).

  • The Movie Club Podcast Episode #9: Fucking Åmål & Heavenly Creatures

The latest Movie Club Podcast is now online. Episode #9 where a smaller, more intimate gathering consisting of Marina, Andrew, Sean from Filmjunk and myself discuss Lukas Moodysson‘s teen-life drama Fucking Åmål (aka Show Me Love) and Peter Jackson‘s dark teen murder tale, Heavenly Creatures.

Also, for the upcoming episode #10, which will likely have Jay Cheel and Omar Hauksson returning, we will be looking at Michael Mann‘s whistle blowing drama The Insider, and the science fiction conspiracy-driven Charlton Heston vehicle, Soylent Green. Be sure to vote at the site for Episode #11′s films in the poll at the sidebar. (Note comments are closed on this post, please post comments and discussion over at The Movie Club Podcast website).

  • The Movie Club Podcast #8 – Short Cuts & I ♥ Huckabees

    Movie Club Podcast

Movie Club Podcast 8The Movie Club is back, bigger than ever and digging into films where ‘everything is connected’ (hey! Lily Tomlin has a major role in both films even).

Also, we have expanded the roster and connected another continent into the Club. Joining the usual suspects: Film Junk‘s Sean Dwyer, The Documentary Blog‘s Jay Cheel, Row Three‘s Andrew, Marina & Kurt is Twitch‘s Omar Swarez who linked up live with us early (early!) in the morning from Iceland. We talk about Robert Altman‘s smoothly flowing Short Cuts and David O. Russell’s deceptively complex I ♥ Huckabees.

Vote for the films of Episode #10 as well.

  • The Movie Club Podcast #7 now up! – The Ice Storm & C.R.A.Z.Y.

    3

movieclub7Here we are again digging deep into two films with the usual suspects. Sean Dwyer from Film Junk and The Documentary Blog‘s Jay Cheel joins Row Three’s Kurt and Marina (Andrew takes a break this week, forced by a spotty internet connection and an addiction to the whip and fedora). Ang Lee‘s fabulously downbeat The Ice Storm is discussed for nearly an hour, and it is followed up by the Canadian instant classic coming-of-age film C.R.A.Z.Y. from director Jean-Marc Vallée.

  • Ang Lee Visits Woodstock

    0

WoodstockMaybe this is old news, but in preparation for this week’s Movie Club pocast focussing on Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm, I happened across this little story on Lee’s next project: Taking Woodstock.

Apparently quite a popular novel, “Taking Woodstock: a True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life” is the memoir of author Elliot Tiber; a closet gay man who works as a hotel manager/interior designer and his role of inadvertently setting in motion events that causes the greatest musical festival of all time to come to fruition.

I’m not a huge Ang Lee fan. I like this and I like that, but then there’re a few clunkers in the filmography as well. A “hit or miss” director for me. Despite what I may think of any one of his particular films, I respect the man greatly for trying different things and crossing genre lines – something not many directors are willing to do. I like directors (and actors or all artists) who take chances and challenge themselves. Retelling the Woodstock story would certainly qualify as something new for Ang Lee.

According to IMDb, this is still in pre-production, but we can look forward to this sometime in 2009.

  • Movie Club Podcast #6 – Roadkill + Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

    0

Roadkill and Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!In lieu of a Cinecast this week Kurt and Andrew took part in the monthly movie club with fellow movie snobs, Sean Dwyer from Film Junk and The Documentary Blog‘s Jay Cheel. Although tough missing Marina’s female perspective this month, but nonetheless getting to the meat of Canada’s own Roadkill from director Bruce McDonald and more black and white goodness with Russ Meyer’s Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. Suffice to say we all had a ball with these films, especially Faster Pussycat! and it shows with one of the most spirited conversations yet.

Details and podcast download (or stream with the widget) over at the Movie Club Podcast website. And be sure to drop your own thoughts into the comment section over there and be part of the conversation!

If you are keen to plan for episode #7 (which will appear some time in late May) we’ll be tackling some bit more upscale fare with Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm and some more (French) Canadian cinema with Jean-Marc Vallée’s C.R.A.Z.Y.. And be sure to vote on the sidebar poll for what films to do for episode #8!

  • Movie Club Podcast #5 – Cannibal Holocaust + Freddie Got Fingered

    1

Movie Club Podcast #5There is no Cinecast from the Third Row this week because Andrew and myself joined fellow Third Row sitter Marina Antunes as well as Film Junk‘s Sean Dwyer and The Documentary Blog‘s Jay Cheel for our monthly MOVIE CLUB discussion. On this episode we get to the meat (daddy would you like some sausage?) of the matter with the misunderstood grindhouse classic Cannibal Holocaust and make some interesting comparisons to Tom Green‘s much maligned Freddie Got Fingered. Despite the non-entertaining nature of the films up for discussion, this may be our best Movie Club Podcast yet.

Details and podcast download (or stream with the widget) over at the Movie Club Podcast website.

If you are keen to plan for episode #6 (which will appear some time in late March) we are trying to climb out of the exploitation basement transitioning from Russ Meyer’s mammary spectacular Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! to the debut film of cult Canadian director Bruce MacDonald, the rock ‘n road female empowerment gem Roadkill. And be sure to vote on the sidebar poll for what films to do for episode #7.

  • Movie Club Podcast #4: Lady in the Water + Funny Games

    0

MovieClub4There is no Cinecast from the Third Row this week because Andrew and myself joined fellow Third Row sitter Marina Antunes as well as Film Junk‘s Sean Dwyer and The Documentary Blog‘s Jay Cheel for our monthly MOVIE CLUB discussion. On this episode we dig deeper than most into M. Night Shyamalan‘s Lady in the Water and make some bizarre comparison’s to Michael Haneke‘s 1997 version of Funny Games. An unusual episode even by Movie Club standards, if you enjoyed the previous Row Three feature on “Breaking the Fourth Wall,” it should be a real treat.

Details and podcast download or widget over at the Movie Club Podcast website.

If you are keen to plan for episode #5 which will appear some time in February. Just for valentines day, we decided to do highly romantic classics Cannibal Holocaust and the equally surreal Freddie Got Fingered. Yes, it’s all about classy cinema on The Movie Club Podcast. Also, vote for films (as varied as Dirty Harry to Dumplings) to discuss on episode #6.
