Flyway Pubcast #7 – Sound Unseen Film+Music+ Art Festival

The Minneapolis/St Paul Sound Unseen Festival begins this week so I held off on this interview Matt Gamble and I conducted with festival programmer and co-directors, Jim Brunzel and Vilay Dethluxay. As a tie-in, Jim has helped with programming at Flyway for the past couple of years as well as founding The Defenders series which Matt takes only one serious issue with.

So we talked all about music and movies and venues and programming and beer and food and secret locations. Enjoy.

Flyway Pubcast #6 – Jeremy Wilker (Death to Prom)

We can’t have a Flyway Festival without some local talent showing off their goofery! Long time friend of Flyway, Jeremy Wilker is back this year and he’s back with his won film! Death to Prom (no, it’s not a zombie movie) was all shot on location in Minneapolis and is a feel-good tribute to John Hughes, with a 2013 updated feel and social issues. “What if Duckie was gay?”

Matt Gamble and Andrew sit down with Jeremy to talk costume design, stealing shots without a permit and how this whole crazy story came about – oh yeah and an awesome closing credits sequence.

Flyway Pubcast #5 – Mark and Mauricio (Styria)

Wince Flyway always breaks open during October, there’s always a slew of darker, creepier films that roll into town for the weekend. One such film is Styria, about an alienated 16 year-old, Lara Hill (Eleanor Tomlinson), who accompanies her art historian father (Stephen Rea) to an abandoned castle across the Iron Curtain in 1989. From a car crash outside of the castle, emerges the beautiful and enigmatic Carmilla (Julia Pietrucha). Lara secrets her away and the two are drawn into an intoxicating relationship. But when Carmilla mysteriously disappears, Lara’s psychic wounds erupt into a living nightmare that consumes the entire town of Styria.

Co-producers and directors Mauricio Chernovetzky and Mark Devendorf sit down with Matt Gamble and myself for a little chit chat about what’s it like working with Stephen Rea, how he’s totally outdone by their lead actress, what it’s like shooting in Hungary and whether or not their movie should even be considered a “horror” film – which it totally is.

Flyway Pubcast #4 – Frederick Thornton (Pearblossom Hwy)

Winner for this year’s best narrative feature at Flyway Film Festival, Producer Frederick Thornton drops by our ever-increasingly inebriated table to talk about his award winning film, Pearblossom Highway. On a personal note, I checked out the film and definitely have it as one of the best movies I’ve seen all year. Absolutely captivating.

Flyway Pubcast #3 – Chris Kelly (“Chasseur” and “Ink”)

We spoke with writer, actor, editor, director Chris Kelly at Flyway a few years ago when he was in town with his amazing fantasy/sci-fi picture, Ink (which is now available on Netflix. He’s back this year with his quite extraordinary short picture, Chasseur.

Flyway Pubcast #2 – Rick Vaicius (Flyway Founder/Director/Programmer)

Wix years have gone by and The Flyway Film Festival has really started to come into its own. Lots of things have changed, lots of things have grown, lots of things are booming. But many things haven’t changed too. One of those things is Rick Vacious – leader for this tribe of indie film makers and lovers. Despite just about to lose his voice, Rick sits down with Andrew and Matt at the Friday night party to talk about some of these big changes this year and in the coming years.

Flyway Film Festival Kicks Off Today

I probably won’t remember most of the “Pub Casts” Matt and I will conducting over the weekend at this year’s Flyway Film Festival; so stay tuned for those because they will be fun. Here’s a little spiel I guess I did last year to help promote the festival. Apparently it was a “blast.” If you’re interested in seeing me actually putting my mouth on Matt Gamble’s face, there is this video as well.
