  • Strippers Stage a Comeback in White Tiger: The Story of Rick and Roddy

    RickAndRoddyMovieStill

This little project has been trucking along at the bottom of my radar for a little while now but I admit that my interest was more out of curiosity than expectation. That was true until today when I saw a new trailer for the film which explains that it’s the story of Rick and Roddy, the most famous twin male strippers of the 90s. They’ve been out of the limelight for a few years but they’re ready to stage their big come back. Potential? Definitely!

Directed by AJ Meadows, White Tiger: The Story of Rick and Roddy stars Scott Hutcheson as Rick, one half of the stripping duo, along with a few other individuals I don’t recognize. Admittedly, I didn’t laugh out loud at the trailer but it did give me a few chuckles, especially the bit about having purchased new g-strings.

Not too much information on the film which has recently wrapped but it looks promising. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

  • Beautiful Trailer for Tom Ford’s A Single Man

    3

    ASingleManMovieStill

Somewhere in my mind, I took note of the fact that noted designer Tom Ford had left behind the fashion world for film. There had been rumblings of his debut A Single Man, being good but it wasn’t until the film’s turns at Venice and Toronto that the rumblings turned to shouts.

The subject of a bidding war between the Weinstein Company, Summit and Miramax (a war the Weinstein’s eventually won), A Single Man recently played to an adoring crowd at Toronto where the film received a standing ovation and much praise. The story of an English professor trying to move on with his life after the death of his lover, the film stars the fabulous Colin Firth as the professor and Matthew Goode as his lover with Julianne Moore and Ginnifer Goodwin thrown in for good measure.

Firth has already taken acting kudos at Venice for his performance and all signs suggest that he may be a shoe-in for Oscar consideration. If the trailer for the film is any indication, I expect the film may also be looking forward to some awards love come early next year. It’s a gorgeously cut trailer which tells very little of the story but suggests a somewhat magical world full of love, beauty and tragedy.

I expect that with the awards buzz, the Weinstein Company will look to get the film out for distribution before the end of the year. I can’t wait for the opportunity to see it.

Trailer is tucked under the seat.

  • Galifianakis & Roberts On Board for It’s Kind of a Funny Story

    3

ZachGalifianakisNews of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s Sugar (our review) follow up It’s Kind of a Funny Story have already excited my little heart but this recent news out of Toronto is sure to catch the attention of a few others.

A story of teen romance set against the backdrop of depression, drugs and a mental institution, the film has cast a few roles and though no lead has been announced, news today is that funny man of the moment Zach Galifianakis has been cast in one of the main adult roles while Emma Roberts, a young up-and-comer who made an impression with her great performance in the under-seen coming-of-age tale Lymelife (this one’s worth a look for the The Ice Storm fans in the audience), will play the romantic lead of Noelle.

Curious that we’ve yet to see an announcement on the lead role of Craig but I expect this will be made clear in the next announcement.

  • Soderbergh’s Liberace Biopic Forges Ahead

    0

LiberaceIt feels like I need a tracking spreadsheet dedicated to Steven Soderbergh. To say the man is busy is an understatement; he’s downright prolific and though some projects are falling through the cracks, others are just getting started.

We already know that his next project is the martial arts actioner Knockout but it looks like Soderbergh will follow that up with the previously announced Liberace, a biopic about the famed performer.

According to Collider, Soderbergh recently told a French newspaper that they had already done wardrobe and costume tests with Michael Douglas who will play the titular role of Liberace. Matt Damon is also signed on to the picture in the role of Scott Thorson, Liberace’s longtime companion.

Soderbergh insists that Douglas “amazed” him though I still can’t see the actor portraying the role of the flamboyant performer. Could this be a possible run at Oscar for Douglas? Sure sounds promising.

  • Ridley Scott to Take On Vampires

    0

ThePassageBookCoverIf you follow the book world, you may recall that in 2007 new comer Jordan Ainsley’s 400 page manuscript for a new post-apocalyptic vampire trilogy started a bidding war between publishers. Onlookers scratched their heads wondering how on earth a guy no one had ever heard of had managed to secure a publishing deal worth approximately four million dollars. When word finally surfaced that Ainsley was the pseudonym of PEN/Hemingway Award-winning author Justin Cronin, the publishing world seemed to breathe a sigh of relief that the book world was not falling apart at the seams. Now one of the books that caused so much hubbub is at the centre of another big project, this time a film to be (potentially) directed by Ridley Scott.

It’s not written in stone but word is that screenwriter John Logan (himself a bringer of both great and awful) is adapting the first book in Ainsley’s trilogy, titled The Passage, for Scott to direct. This project should make genre fans happy as it’s a story which features a non-romantic vampire. Set in 2016, the story revolves around a U.S. government project gone awry that affects a group of experimental subjects (condemned inmates plucked from death row) by turning them into highly infectious vampires.

I’m not familiar with Cronin’s work and “The Passage” isn’t due for publication until June 2010 but I’m curious to see what his story has to offer. Even if Scott passes up the opportunity, this story has potential to be a great film. Fingers crossed it ends up more like 28 Days Later and less like I Am Legend.

  • Norton Plays with De Niro in Stone Trailer

    1

Director John Curran is all over the map. Of his previous films, I’ve only seen The Painted Veil but that period drama is night and day from his new film Stone, a drama starring Edward Norton, Robert De Niro and Milla Jovovich.

Adapted by Angus MacLachlan (of Junebug fame) from his own play, it’s the story of a convict (Norton) who tries to manipulate his parole officer (De Niro) by using his wife (Jovovich). Admitedly, had I read this synopsis with no names attached, I would have passed it over but with Norton on board and Curran behind the camera, this is a must see.

I liked Curran and Norton’s previous colaboration and am willing to give this the benefit of the doubt. I only hope the film is better than this trailer suggests otherwise, it’s going to be a long and painful watch.

Stone is scheduled for release sometime next year.

  • First Look at Andrew Niccol’s The Cross

    0

    TheCrossMovieStill

Few filmmakers make an entrance the way Andrew Niccol did. Gattaca may not have broken box office records but the film was widely loved and for me, remains one of the most beautiful and favourite films about the near-future.

Niccol hasn’t exactly been slipping but his offerings since that 1997 classic have been few. I found S1m0ne a miss but loved Lord of War and yet, I found myself hoping that perhaps Niccol would return to sci-fi. My hopes were lifted when earlier in the year it was announced that he was working on a new project, a sci-fi project titled The Cross about “a man seeking to cross a mysterious border, something no one else has achieved.” Vague stuff but intriguing none the less.

The film starts Orlando Bloom in the lead as the man on the run and the fantastic Vincent Cassel as the guard every foiling his plans. Olga Kurylenko also stars in the film likely as some sort of love interest. The original announcement of the project was very vague but our good friends at Quiet Earth have uncovered both an expanded synopsis for the film and some concept art.

    First up, what’s it about?

Mylar (Bloom) and his younger brother Castro come to a town to cross the border in search of a better life. The two travelers, full of hope, all too quickly realize that their journey leads them to an inescapable world full of doom. The enigmatic border is strictly enforced under the command of a guard, Guideon, who prohibits anyone from ever leaving. Castro doesn’t make it alive past two weeks, but Mylar defies all odds and becomes the first to successfully cross the border. And he also becomes the first to come back… all for the love of a woman, Vera. Mylar must now devise a plan not only to set himself free, but all of his fellow citizens as well. But perhaps crossing the border is not the answer. Perhaps the key lies in altering the border and whatever it may represent…

If it sounded promising before, it sounds even better now and taking a look at these images, I can’t help but get all giddy.

  • Paranormal Activity Looks Awwwesome

    1

ParanormalActivityMovieStilThere’s been a lot of talk lately about Paranormal Activity. The small indie horror has been screaming it’s way across the web and though it keeps popping up, I’d managed to avoid the trailers until a new trailer started making the rounds with the common response of “looks awesome.” I had my misgivings. A movie about a haunted house? Really? Are we back to that? Then thinking about it I came to realize that it’s been a while since we’ve seen a good one and frankly, horror films of late have been more about the gross than about the scare so heck, why not. I checked out the trailer.

Somewhat reminiscent of everything from The Blair Witch Project to White Noise, this low budget film sets up a semi-realistic premise in which a couple thinks their home is being haunted so they set up a camera to capture video of what happens while they’re asleep. What’s most impressive about this low-fi trailer is that it manages to be effective in building tension and if the praise is accurate, horror fans are in for a treat.

Paranormal Activity is scheduled to play Fantastic Fest and I’m not sure if the September 25th release date I’ve seen kicking around is accurate but it certainly looks like a movie to keep on the radar.

I prefer the original trailer over the newly cut and distributed one which features most of the footage from the original trailer intercut with crowd reaction from a screening.

Both trailers are tucked under the seat for your viewing pleasure.

  • Kidman Has A Sex Change (Of Sorts)

    0

NicoleKidmanTomas Alfredson became a household name, at least among genre film fans, with the release of Let the Right One In. The film of young love between a vampire and a little boy was both gorgeous and touching while never feeling forced or falling prey to the melodramatic romance present in another vampire/human romance.

I had originally missed these news but Alfredson has signed on to another delicate project, this one just as interesting if not genre based. The director will be taking on the task of bringing to the big screen the story of Danish painter Einar Wegener. If you’re not familiar with Wegener, you’re not alone. Though successful, Wegener doesn’t seem as known for his work as for his private life, a life which was quite colourful. You see, Wegener was the first man to undergo a sex changer operation to become a woman, a procedure which he endured in 1931 at a time when the procedure was still experimental.

Screenwriter and playwright Lucinda Coxon is adapting The Danish Girl from David Ebershoff’’s award winning novel of the same name which provides a fictionalized account of Wegener’s life, a life which will be embodied by Nicole Kidman. Kidman is an obviously talented actress and though she has seen her share of bad make-up and noses, I have a hard time picturing her as a man which leads me to guess that perhaps a large part of story takes place after the operation, focusing on Weger’s life as Lili Elbe.

The film will start production soon and will precede Alfredson’s previously announced spy project.

  • Redford Vs. Spielberg Over Lincoln?

    0

RobertRedfordThere’s nothing like a little competition to get the blood pumping, especially when that competition is between Robert Redford and Steven Spielberg.

For some time now Spielberg has been working to put together an Abraham Lincoln epic but the film has been placed on hold due to budgetary and location problems and though Spielberg isn’t giving up on the project, someone else has stepped in and will apparently beat him to the punch.

Recent news is that Robert Redford has his own Lincoln film in the works and though this one appears to have different scope, focusing primarily on the events which unfolded after the assassination of the president and the individuals charged with the murder.

Redford’s The Conspirator is scheduled to begin shooting next month with James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn in leading roles. Wright Penn has been cast as Mary Surratt, the only female in the group charged with the president’s death while McAvoy has been cast as Frederick Aiken, a war hero who reluctantly defends Surratt.

Spielberg insists that his film is very different from Redford’s and is even putting up a good front saying that he believes Redford’s project will “compliment” his project but it’s never easy to have two similar projects. All will be well if Redford’s film is a success but what if it fails? What happens then to Spielberg’s project? That’s yet to be seen and considering that the project is now on the backburner, it could be years before we see Spielberg’s vision.

I’m curious to see both since it sounds like they are quite different but at this point, I’m happy to see that Redford’s film will be the first out of the gate. How do you feel? Is there one you’d like to see more than the other? Is this somewhat of a Redford/Speilberg smakcdown?

  • Perhistoric Parasites Invading Your Home, Soon

    0

    TheThawMovieStill

Earlier in the year we posted a trailer for Mark A. Lewis’ The Thaw. The film stars Val Kilmer as a professor who with a group of students, uncovers a Woolly Mammoth which also happens to carry a prehistoric virus capable of killing everything. The trailer looked promising and I had expected that it would see some sort of theatrical release, however small, but it looks as though that’s not going to happen.

News today is that Lewis’ film will be making an appearance on DVD and Blu-ray on October 6th, just in time for Halloween. Definitely disappointing as it does look more interesting than the latest Saw installment but at this point, I’m just happy to report that we’ll have a chance to see the film at all.

To go with the news of a DVD release, there’s also a new redband trailer and it looks mighty spiffy.

  • First Look at Egoyan’s Chloe

    0

ChloeMovieStillFollowing it’s premiere at TIFF, Atom Egoyan’s newest film started to generate buzz; Not too surprising considering he is a Canadian sweetheart premiering his film in Toronto. Sadly, the first round of reviews have not been particularly positive. A review is forthcoming from one of our Toronto correspondents but until then, take in this reaction from The A.V. Club’s Scott Tobias:

Chloe (09 Egoyan C): Lipstick on a pig. Egoyan tries to polish material unworthy of him.Seductive surface (two words: Mamma Mia), but dopey.

Doesn’t sound particularly optimistic which is a shame for Egoyan whose last few films have been lacklustre.

Chloe stars Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson as Catherine and David, an apparently happy and successful couple making their way through life among Toronto’s well to do. When David misses his flight home and his surprise birthday part, Catherine suspects that he is cheating and so she hires an escort named Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) to seduce him and see if he falls for the bait.

It sounds like an interesting enough story full of drama and potential emotional eruptions and though I expect Egoyan keeps a tight reign on the performances, I’m a little worried about the lukewarm reception.

A trailer has yet to make the rounds but earlier today a clip, the film’s first, found its way online. It features Catherine and Chloe in what appears to be their first meeting and as expected, we have Moore quietly falling apart on camera. The short clip shows promise.
