A select few movies are able to tell a beautiful sad story in such a way that they truly touch the viewers heart. The Year my Parents Went on Vacation is one such movie. Cao Hamburger delivers a heartwarming coming of age tale with a social study of a multicultural society that is in a state of flux.

The Year my Parents Went on VacationThe film tells the story of Mauro (Michel Joelsas), a 12 year old boy who is left by his parents on his grandfather’s door step in 1970 Brazil with the instructions to tell everyone that they have simply gone on vacation. Mauro and the audience are not directly told that they are leaving him because they are political activists and all that Mauro is able to learn is that they will return in time for the World Cup. His parents leave and he heads up to meet his grandfather. Mauro soon discovers that his grandfather has passed away and he is now alone. Mauro is taken in by the neighbor of his grandfather, Shlomo (Germano Haiut) and the other Jewish tenants of the building. Mauro slowly comes to terms with his new life but he is convinced that his parents will return so he is not willing to fully integrate himself into the new community.

I was up too late watching a movie and I want to write a review but I’m busy at work so I’ve got no time for hints on this one. Good Luck.

  • Tropic Thunder in Theatres Two Days Early

    0

We just heard through the grapevine that Tropic Thunder is set for release on August 13th now instead of August 15th. Personally it seems a bit strange to be pushing movies forward unless there is a holiday or if the movie has been really hyped up. Given that, I’ll still be there on opening night to catch this one. Everything I’ve seen from Tropic Thunder has me pumped for this one.

Sorry for the poor quality screen shot on this one. This one is from a movie that is about as kitschy as you can get and you’ll probably only find it in bargain VHS bins.

This one seems like a really easy one if you have seen it. It is definitely a movie that doesn’t get the recognition that it deserves.

  • Here are the Cronenberg Movies

    1

Here is how the voting went down for the Cronenberg movies that Dave and I will cover. Our next five podcasts will cover Eastern Promises, Naked Lunch, Crash, Videodrome and finally The Brood. We will then do a sixth podcast that discusses our general feelings on the movies we watched plus also any other Cronenberg movies that we feel like mentioning. I’m quite happy with the picks although I really would have liked to dive into A History of Violence a bit more than Eastern Promises but I’ll save that for the sixth podcast.

Once we hit Crash we’ll start the next round of voting on which director to cover.

  • Mad Detective Trailer

    1

Apple just posted the trailer for Johnnie To’s latest film Mad Detective. I’ve already seen it and I was not the biggest fan. I have a feeling that my lower opinion comes simply from it being different than what I expected. I’m planning on revisiting this in the next couple of weeks. If you are a fan of To check it out and if you are not a fan then you should be. Go check out Exiled and I guarantee you will be.

Check out an even higher quality trailer at Apple.

I think I’ve seen this movie once back in the 80s. I recently picked it up in the bargain bin and almost watched it while on the ride back from Calgary. Can someone tell me if it is worth watching?

I had a hard time picking a screen shot for this one that wouldn’t be a total give away. I hope I managed to make this a bit challenging.
