  • FAQ about Time Travel

    3

As I am an IT type guy I am a big fan of the British tv series IT Crowd. I love the humour and all the characters. Since first watching it I have become a bit of a fan of Chris O’Dowd (Roy in IT Crowd). Last night I was browsing around the web and I discovered a poster at IMPA for the British Comedy called Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel which stars O’Dowd.

    FAQ About Time Travel

I did some more searching and found the trailer, which looks pretty hilarious. The movie is set for a release in the UK on April 24th. I’m hoping that it ends up being released here in North America shortly after.

Finally, here is O’Dowd in the opening scene of IT Crowd.

  • Screen Shot Quiz #153

    3

Yesterday’s quiz was figured out fairly quickly by Greg. It was Mirrormask. Today’s quiz might be pretty easy also but I figured that I should highlight at least one bad movie during my science fiction themed quizzes that I really enjoy. This is one that I watch when I want to turn my brain off but enjoy some action.

    Screen Shot #153

I’ll post the answer on Monday along with the next quiz.

  • Let The Right One In = Bad Subtitles

    17

I wish I new about this before I had gone out and purchased the DVD for the beautiful horror film Let The Right One In (Andrew’s Review) but since I didn’t I can at least warn everyone else. Icons of Fright just posted a series of screen shots that show how terrible the subtitles for the North American release really is.

Here is an example from Sweden:

    080128_1131-15

and here is the same shot from North America

    let_the_right_one_in-13

Digital Bits has contacted the distributor and Magnet has said they will no longer be releasing the current version of the DVD but all DVDs printed now will have the proper subtitles. Unfortunately there is no plan for refunds or exchanges.

“There are no exchanges. We are going to make an alternate version available however. For those that wish to purchase a version with the theatrical subtitles, it will be called out in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package where it will list SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH.”

This sucks for me and anyone else who has already purchased the DVDs but if you haven’t just keep a watch on the packaging and make sure you get the correct version.

If you would like to complain here is their email address dvd@magpictures.com e-mail address. I would only suggest doing so if you purchased the DVD already and feel that they should provide an exchange.

  • Screen Shot Quiz #152

I am pretty sure that if I had shown a picture of Jeff Goldbloom in a bright red cowboy shirt with big furry white chaps someone would have gotten yesterday’s shot which came from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Today I was planning on continuing the science fiction theme unfortunately I grabbed a DVD off my shelf thinking it was a scifi flick. While walking to work I realized it is more of a fantasy movie. My only excuses are that I was rushed and that I never realized how few DVDs I own that are real scifi movies.

I’ll post the answer tomorrow along with the next quiz.

  • Away We Go One Sheet

    13

The one sheet is now out for Sam Mendes’ Away We Go. Marina posted the trailer a while back. Personally I think this sheet looks a little bit too “Sundance” for my tastes but I’ve enjoyed every single Mendes movie that I have seen so I’m definitely in for catching this one.

Jonas pretty much had yesterday’s quiz from the beginning but was unsure of himself and early this morning Maurice did confirm that the shot was from Immortel. I’ve never read any of Enki Bilal‘s comics but now I’m a tempted. Today I continue with a Sci-Fi theme and give to you a shot that might be hard. There were so many choices of what to choose for this movie as it is one of my favorite cult flicks but I wanted to pick something challenging so I hope I didn’t make it too challenging.

I’ll post the answer tomorrow along with the next quiz.

Update: I think I made this one too hard so I’ll add second shot.

Jonas was correct yesterday. The screen shot was from Battle Beyond the Stars. Today I continue with a Sci-Fi theme in honour of the SciFi Channel changing their name to SyFy which for some reason just makes me think of stir fry.

  • No TADFF/TIFF for Me.

    6

TIFF 09Today was the first day of my new job. It looks like a great job and I’m pretty happy to be doing something new for a while. There is one terrible side effect of the new job and that is I have to wait for holidays to build up once again. I’ll have enough holidays built up by the fall for my regular family trip but I will not have enough for neither of Toronto After Dark nor the Toronto International Film festival. I was thinking I could do Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver but they are all shortly after TIFF and they just won’t work out either. It looks like I might be thinking of Sundance in January but I would like some other suggestions. The festival needs to be in North America and should take place sometime very late in the year or early in the new year. Any suggestions?

  • The Unknown Woman

    5

unknown_woman_onesheetI don’t have a lot to say about the movie that I’m going to go see tomorrow night. One of the theatres that shows Art House type movies is showing La Sconosciuta (The Unknown Woman). The director is Giuseppe Tornatore who also directed Cinema Paradiso which is one of the many movies I have never gotten around to watching yet own.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about this one? The trailer looks pretty interesting. I’ll throw a review up later in the week but until then here is the synopsis and the trailer.

When we first meet Irena, a young Ukrainian immigrant alone in a bustling Italian city, she is fixated on getting a housekeeping job at a nondescript apartment building. Money is clearly not her motivation; she rents an expensive flat just across the plaza where, from her window, she spies on an unsuspecting family living in one of the building’s sprawling apartments. The doorman, smitten by Irena’s worn beauty, gets her a job scrubbing the floors of the building’s vertiginous spiral staircase. It’s there that Irena calculatedly befriends Gina, the family’s maid, and learns more about the lives of Valeria and Donato Adacher, high-end jewelers whose frayed marriage seems on the verge of collapse. Their only child, Thea, suffers from a rare condition that has robbed her of such crucial defense mechanisms as the instinct to put her hands out when she falls.

Stopping at nothing to insert herself into the Adachers’ lives, Irena finally succeeds in taking Gina’s place as maid and nanny to the fragile Thea, with whom she develops a powerful bond. But as Valeria begins to suspect something isn’t right about their devoted housekeeper, Irena’s violent past resurfaces. As secrets from her past threaten to swallow them all, the final strands of a web of murder and deceit come together to reveal the shocking truth behind Irena’s connection to the Adachers.

  • Updated Hunger Poster and Trailer

    9

I‘ve been thinking of doing a post on 6 months after TIFF reflections. I’d look at the movies that I saw and missed and the ones I’ve caught since. One of those movies is Hunger (Marina’s Review from VIFF). As a pure coincidence IFC films just contacted me to ask me if I’d like to update the trailer and poster for Hunger. Well…. yes I would so here without further ado is the official poster and trailer for Hunger. I still haven’t seen it so I can’t really comment on the movie other than saying that it is one that I regret having missed at TIFF last year.

Official Synopsis: In 1981, a deadly serious battle takes place in the infamous H-block of Belfast’s Maze Prison. Republican inmates, led by Bobby Sands (Fassbender), refuse to eat until the British government acknowledges the IRA as a legitimate political organization. Steve McQueen’s commanding direction captures the phsyical details of their struggle. Is it suicide or martyrdom?

Hunger is finally receiving its wide release on March 20th.

  • Haunting in Connecticut Motion Poster

    7

Many of us felt that the poster for The Haunting in Connecticut was somewhat disturbing… well I just have to say the still poster doesn’t hold a candle to the following motion poster. The motion poster is a bit noisy so I put it under the seat.
