  • Heath Ledger to Appear in New Dark Knight Movie?

    6

So I’ll get right to the punch, it looks like the Joker and Christopher Nolan might have one more trick up their sleeve. The director responsible for very successfully rebooting the Batman franchise is considering using previously unseen footage and cutscenes of Heath Ledger as the Joker in the next installment: The Dark Knight Rises.

Among other “bombs” dropped in past weeks about the new film about how The Riddler won’t be in the movie and it’s not going to be shot in 3D (thank God!), this is probably the biggest. From “a source” being quoted over at
    Paste Magazine:

“The idea is to use these fragments of cut scenes and use CGI to have The Joker appear one last time…Chris wants some continuity between movies and for the franchise to pay tribute to Heath and his portrayal of the Joker…it would only be a fleeting moment in the movie and would only be included with the full consent of Heath’s family.”

Of course we can file this squarely in the rumor bin at this point but if it is true then it’s a pretty interesting concept. Ledger posthumously won the best supporting actor Oscar for his portrayal in 2008. Is using his likeness in the next film kind of crass and only for purposes of getting butts in the seats? Well, yes and yes. I think Dark Knight Rises won’t have much trouble finding an audience so inserting Ledger into the film as a gimmick is kind of off-putting and could possibly backfire on the production at some level; even if, as Paste is reporting, the family is all good with it.

On the other hand if it is something that is integral to the plot then it’s just one more sweet morsel of goodness included in the Nolan cookie bakery. Ok, that metaphor made little sense, but what are your thoughts on Ledger being in the new movie?

  • Oscar Hosts 2011: Hathaway and Franco. Yay!

    0

Though I get less and less excited for the Oscars with each passing year I still find myself discussing the awards show incessantly and always look forward to nominees and announcements surrounding the show. At the very least it’s fun to bash this or that about the actual production of the Awards Ceremony the next day. Almost universally the main topic is how well did the host(s) do with keeping everything fun, fresh and moving along.

This year we’ll be treated to two young hosts dazzling us with their stage presence: James Franco and the quite fetching Anne Hathaway. Both seem to be reaching quite a high point in their careers and both are uber charismatic, charming and easy on the eyes. Both have appeared on the telecast before (not as hosts) and I remember quite fondly Hathaway’s singing and dancing with host Hugh Jackman a couple of years back – to quite positive reviews if I remember correctly.

So I think this is quite an excellent choice the more I think about it. They’re both funny, quirky, goofy, at times quite odd and extremely talented people, they should get the young crowd interested in watching and having two hosts rather than one (as it was last year with Martin and Baldwin) should give opportunity for some light banter and go between. To the best of my knowledge, the two haven’t worked together in a feature film before, but they strike me as a couple that will instantly hit it off with chemistry and pizzaz.

But I think an interesting question is how will this play in to their potential as being nominees (especially Franco) in the same year they are hosting? Will it hurt their chances? Does it matter? Will it be awkward on stage or will they use that angle to their comedic advantage? Should be fun!

So is this is a good fit for the always evolving Oscars or should they just have gone back and gotten Billy Crystal to host again?

  • Star Wars Movie Poster Mash-Up

    1

Seems that all the rage in the art-design, poster world has been doing minimalist versions of one sheets from popular movies. And all across YouTube over the past however long, we’ve seen countless movie mash-ups that intertwines dialogue or the use of creative editing to make up films with a completely different feel to them or as comedy gags or as an entirely different plot with the same characters. I’ve never seen it done with posters to my recollection.

Then skimming around the various art/design sites/Twitters I frequent, I stumble across this series of posters that are simply amusing at first, but quite clever upon closer reflection. Using silhouette shots or familiar logos from the Star Wars franchise, artist Matthew Ranzetta takes these image and mashes them together with titles from other iconic films. Take a look at the posters below. I find the Cool Hand Luke poster design to be quite ingenious.

  • Irvin Kershner: 1923 – 2010 [RIP]

    1

Looks like it’s one of those weeks. Just on the heels of the sad passing of Leslie Nielsen comes word of Empire Strikes Back director, Irvin Kershner leaving this world at the age of 87 after battling illness in his Paris home.

Some other notable titles Kershner sat in the director’s chair for included James Bond: Never Say Never Again starring Sean Connery and Robocop II. He also directed the great George C. Scott in Flim-Flam Man and a whole slew of other great actors over the many years Kershner was working in the Hollywood system. Of course he remains the director most famous for helping to create what the vast majority of Star Wars fans consider the best in the series: The Empire Strikes Back.

“Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.” Rest in peace, sir.

  • Apollo 18 Teaser Poster

    0

In the latest Cinecast (epsiode 191), Kurt briefly mentions a love for the Criterion, “to the moon” documentary, For All Mankind and thus ensues a discussion about how the human race has stopped caring about further adventures to our closest celestial neighbor.

But now word is spreading about this little film being produced by Night Watch/Day Watch director, Timur Bekmambetov, titled Apollo 18. I know essentially nothing about the film, but this new teaser poster gives us a pretty good idea.

  • Nicolas Cage Loses His Shit

    2

I think for the most part we’re pretty big fans of Nicolas Cage within the third row. Lately, Cage fanatacism seems to have reached some sort of pinnacle of hipster status. I tend to find such things grating and eventually lose interest in said subject (the latest zombie craze is a good example). But I don’t see myself ever losing my fanboy love of Nic Cage. I don’t love every movie he’s involved with, but I’m almost always willing to at least give them a chance. If for no other reason than I’m likely to get something as awesome as this mash-up of his freakouts in every single movie he’s ever been in… almost.

Thanks to Harry Hanrahan for putting together, yet again, this wonderful little mash-up and thanks to Pajiba for giving us the movie breakdown that you see in this batshit crazy clip.

  • Hathway Does Holmes

    3

I missed this weekend’s episode of SNL and I’m really sorry I did. Not only was one of my current favorite crush’s hosting (Anne Hathaway), but she does a nice job of taking some loving jabs at Katie Holmes in this mock interview from Miley Cyrus. Normally I don’t follow the gossip show but since the hyenas at SNL Productions don’t allow any of their stuff on YouTube, we have to settle for this clip. It’s worth it though.

  • Duncan Jones’ “Source Code” Trailer is Here

    10

Welcome to Friday Night Videos here at RowThree. Tonight we’re featuring Duncan Jones’ sophomore effort, Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but two things strike me right away. 1) awesome. 2) looks like a slight variation of “Quantum Leap” meets Groundhog Day with Tony Scott’s Deja Vu replacing Punxsutawney Phil.

The premise appears to revolve around a military installation that is able to send a person into the shoes of a man who died in a train explosion over and over again until he is able to discover who the bomber is. Check out this fairly interesting trailer below…

  • Willy Wonka Slash Tron Mash-up

    0

Topless Robot always managing to find the most bizarre and yet strangely fascinating movie/nerd related items floating around the internet. Today seems to be no exception with the uncovering of a fan made trailer for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (just released yesterday on Blu-ray) with audio from the new Tron movie. These mash-up thingies seem to be all the rage with the kids these days, but what fascinates me is the mind behind these things. What kind of person wakes up one day and decides they’re going to collide these two films together in a mock trailer? It’s warped, but somehow amazing at the same time.

  • A Wagonload of Stills and a Trailer for “Cowboys & Aliens”

    7

Oh God oh God, pleeeze tell me Harrison Ford finally kicks some ass in this sci-fi gunsliger picture! Now granted this is from the director who brought us the likes of Iron Man and Zathura (neither of which were particularly inspiring), but LOST co-creator, Damon Lindelof, helped out with the screenplay. So I’m keeping my hopes up that this is as full of awsome as it looks.

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Daniel Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford).

But as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents – townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors – all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Besides what we get in the stills/trailer, the film also stars Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano and Keith Carradine.
