  • 69th Annual Golden Globe Nominations

    9

Really none of us give much more than a squirt of piss around here for these nominations and awards show (just look at the nominees for best drama picture to understand why – also apparently My Week with Marilyn is somehow a musical and/or comedy). But c’mon, everyone will be tuning in to see how much of a fool Ricky Gervais will make of all the guests present and not present. Or how much of a fool he’ll make of himself. It’s going to be a load of uncomfortable fun to be sure. But if you’re interested in finding out who takes home the statue from The Hollywood Foreign Press, here are the five or six nominees in each category that have a shot at it this year…

  • Transformers 4 Trailer is Here!

    1

Oh wait, it’s just Hasbro up to their old tricks again. We saw the first trailer for Battleship hit the net a couple of months ago and a lot of people at the time were saying it’s kind got a similar vibe as Transformers. I kind of washed that aside hoping for something a little more interesting, sticking within the confines of the board game. Um… no.

This thing is just an excuse to put out another Transformers movie in 2012 but not officially call it Transformers. You don’t believe me? You will Dr. Jones. Have a look below the seats for the laughability of the fact that Hasbro has the gall to call this anything other than what it is: Transformers Again.

  • Talk Amongst Yourselves

This is gossipy, paparazzi sort of garbage that normally I steer clear of. But it’s Friday and we’ve got nothing better to do – plus I know Marina will dig on it. Bu take a look at this quick video of Keanu Reeves. By all measures I’ve heard the guy is a class act. This fits with that notion. Plus, if the woman was actually hand-cuffed to the pole, he’d stay with her until the subway car crashes to a bloody and disastrous halt; even if it meant his life. Yes, this subway is safe.

  • Introducing “My Criterion”

    5

As if we needed more social media. Even in the movie realm. We already have Get Glue, iTrackmine, IMDb and a whole slew of other apps and sites that let us compile our collections, keep track of lending and brag (or feel inferior) to your friends about all of your awesome titles. Well this maybe more of the same, but it’s Criterion, it’s movie related (generally awesome movies) and looks really nice.

So I got the notice in my inbox this morning that Criterion.com has launched “My Criterion.” Nothing really special or different from other movie sharing sites; but again, it’s Criterion. So since it makes sense to separate these titles from other DVDs on your shelf, I suppose it makes some sense to differentiate this virtual sect of your DVDs (and Blu-rays) as well.

You can make lists of films you own, make notes on them and with the Holiday season upon us, I believe I’ll find the “wish list” section particularly useful (or hopefully family members will find my profile useful ;) ). If you’ve already got a Criterion profile, you can get started by simply adding any title to your “own it” list or your “wish” list. I’ve already gotten a start. Come on over, take a look at my wish list and then send whatever DVD is on that list to the RowThree studios at your convenience. I’ll love you forever for it.

  • Useful Android App for Movie Goers: “Screen Filter”

    4

You know what I hate? Probably the same thing you do: scabies. Oh, and also people who turn on their bright cell phone a few seats in front of you during a movie. Outside of audible talking it’s the single most distracting thing that happens to me in theaters. Now, while I haven’t discovered an app that will simply make these people disappear (yet), I found something that I do find useful so that at least I can still be considerate to those around me during a film screening.

First off, I DO NOT condone texting, emailing, Twittering or really any use of a cell phone during a public film screening. Except one. I like to check the time. Since I have a phone, I rarely wear a watch anymore these days. But in the theater, it’s a little annoying when that screen lights up (even for just a second) to check the time. I’ve always been very discreet about it in the past (though not everyone is) and have never had any complaints. Checking under the armpit or in my coat; which to be honest is still pretty annoying. Well that’s fixed!

I found a free app called “Screen Filter” (in the Android Market) that has solved that problem. It will set your screen brightness down to any percentage you wish – all the way down to pretty much black if you want it to. These settings are far dimmer/darker than your phone’s stock brightness adjuster. You can make several presets and have them show up right on your home screen if you wish. So with the tap of a finger your phone will go to super bright to super dark and stay there until you tap it back to your normal setting.

I’ve found it not only useful for super dark settings like the movie theater, but also I like to read downloaded material at night. Setting the screen to 15% brightness is easy on the eyes. And lastly, it really saves on your battery. Which if you’re an Android user and have one of the newer high end phones, you know saving every last drop of energy from your phone can be a struggle.

Don’t fear friends of Apple (cult members), I found an app similar in the iTunes app store as well. It’s called simply, Dimmer and appears to do the exact same thing. But since I don’t use such a device, I can’t test it to be sure – though it has good ratings. Either way, this has been a really smooth and useful item for me to keep going to public film screenings and take my tech with me. But again, please see the first sentence in paragraph two above!

  • Melancholia Marquee Melarky

    0

Our good friends at the historic Uptown theater in Minneapolis always have a good time with their signage. This one probably generated a lot of verbal question marks, but if you’re a child of the 80′s and/or just love your pop cinema, this is a brilliant one.

  • Cinecast Episode 237 – One T or Two?

    56

Well, Gamble’s Back. But after the Thanksgiving Weekend blow-out there is precious little in the way of new releases, making this show a Mega-sized “The Watch List” episode. Before we go there, we delve into our favourite female performances of 2011 (of all shapes and sizes.) One small observation: We talk a lot of documentaries this episode, and go over a lot of TV series; particularly Matt who was laid up with a sports injury for over three weeks and watched a metric tonne of TV/film/etc. The latest from Errol Morris, Werner Herzog, and another go around with Bellflower. Take it away Gamble.

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening!

  • Talk Amongst Yourselves

    9

One of the greatest movie related comments I’ve every had the pleasure of reading on Reddit…

Brother: “Let’s watch a Christmas movie. I vote Die Hard!”

Mom: “That’s not a Christmas movie.”

Me: “Well it does take place at Christmas, mom. And it does have Christmas music in the soundtrack.”

Mom: “It’s still not a Christmas movie. Where’s the Christmas miracle?”

Brother: “You ask for miracles Mom?”

    Me: “I give you the F… B… I…”

    High fives all around!!

  • Video Review: The Artist

    8

The Artist got big buzz as it made its way through TIFF ’11 and just received five nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards, which led the pack. Nothing but positive vibes about this film coming from pretty much everyone I’ve talked to that has seen it. Here, Cinecast co-host Kurt Halfyard gives The Substream the rundown on this exceptional film that should be hitting theaters in your area very very soon. Some sites are already predicting this film has a shot at taking home the best picture statue at the Academy Awards. Wow! Wouldn’t be a Kurt Halyard review without going a little bit over schedule. Ladies and gentlemen, the 2 (and a half) minute critic:
