Cinecast Episode 496 – Poverty Porn

Cinecast fans clamoring for a 3+ hour show… you get what you asked for. We have got tons of good stuff to talk about this week! To start it off, Kurt has been badgering Andrew for weeks to catch Good Time (SPOILERS!) and it finally made its way to Minneapolis; it’s dy-no-mite! Next up (not) a side project from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wind River (SPOILERS!) which very much takes a lot of its cues from director Taylor Sheridan’s other screenplays, Hell or High Water and Sicario is one of the year’s best. Also, Renner and Olsen knock it out of the national park. Lastly, in terms of theatrical releases, a smaller production starring Ben Mendohlson and Rooney Mara that is based off of a two-act play is quite riveting and discussion-worthy. Check out our talk on Una when you get a chance. Oh, and if you haven’t heard, “Game of Thrones” season 7 has ended… in a big way. Due to listener requests, we engage. The Watch List hits every avenue. We’ve got rape fallout in the 50s, angry trucks, multiple Jeff Daniels, multiple Noomi Rapace, snipers and a singing and dancing Roy Scheider… and a lot more.

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening!

I think I mistakenly mentioned that “The Guest” is A24. I don’t believe it is. Someone on LetterBoxd made a full list:

I would say there’s one major element to the story that I completely ruin in our discussion. 1000% go check out the movie and then get back to us. It’s one of the best of the year!

Definitely looking forward to Wind River. Have not listened to this episode yet but I’m hearing that Good Time is Robert Pattinson’s best performance to date? That might actually be saying something.

Yeah he’s on fire post-Harry Potter/Twilight! Good Time will very likely be on my year-end top 5.

I thought both Wind River and Una were really good, I didn’t expect that much from Una as it only got a release in small Independent cinemas over here. I’ll be honest and saw it at home which I kind of regret now but most of my money has been spent on a Meville retrospective we’ve had in Manchester the last few weeks.

I know it was touched on in the episode, but Orphan Black is great at having the multiple characters played by the same person onscreen at the same time. Whatever your views on the show (I started losing interest after season 3) Tatiana Maslany is fantastic in it and you fully believe that all the characters are different to each other.

I think Taylor Sheridan owes a bit to Silence of the Lambs with Sicario and now Wind River. Sicario very much had a Clarice/Hannibal Lecter vibe between its two lead characters. In Wind River, when that knock on the door scene happened, I immediately thought of the Clarice doorbell scene. Sheridan just used the editing choice as a flashback. It was a good twist because it made me sigh and I thought Bernthal was playing another bad guy.

Good catch. That door knocking scene is almost exactly like the Clarice scene in SotL. It’s been a long time, I need to watch that movie again.

UNA is in regular release now. Folks should check it out, then report back to this archive episode for our discussion herein.
