Cinecast Episode 472 – We’ll Wait

This week’s main feature has much ado and The Mary Sue is going to be none too happy about it. A Cure for Wellness is a bit divisive for your co-hosts this week though we do manage to find some middle ground on some issues. Another Scientology doc – don’t roll your eyes just yet – will be hitting theaters in a limited run over the next few weeks and Andrew and Kurt hash out the interesting film making process in My Scientology Movie more than the subject matter itself. While Kurt played catch-up with last weeks discussion on John Wick: Chapter 2, Andrew visited The Great Wall in his new favorite theater in Minneapolis.

On The Watchlist, Kurt points out that Xavier Dolan is somewhat of a kindred spirit to Pedro Almodovar while Andrew sings the praises of Julieta. And everything comes together in the annual praise of Stanley Kubrick’s anti-war comedy-horror-recruitment-tool Full Metal Jacket.

Sit back and enjoy (Sniff your fingers if you must) it’s going to be a full one.

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening!

A good complement to My Scientology Movie would be the Channel Four/CBC joint doc Scientologists at War, which also highlights Marty Rathbun’s vengeance against Scientology tactics. It keeps getting kiboshed in Canada due to licensing but def worth a watch.

Nice to know! Watching Scientology movies and reading extended magazine-features on the subject is a hobby of mine.

All compelling reasons to watch ACFW if you love cinema.

There are periods in this episode where I could barely hear Andrew. Something wrong with his mic?

It was a software quirk that he fixed midway with a reboot. Sorry about that.

I had no issue with Ruby Rose in JOHN WICK 2, since I viewed her as this film’s version of the silent James Bond villain.

She’s actually an Australian model turned actress, who has become quite prominent after joining the cast of Orange is the New Black. She’s also in the new xXx and Resident Evil films.

Oh, and thought that THE GREAT WALL was pretty, but extremely dull. I’ll take the LORD OF THE RINGS films over this any day.

Watched it again. Never a dull moment. Always something new and interesting visually, aurally and creatively and the fighting is always at B-level fun.

Even the storytelling bit in the middle with the ink drawings was a nice break and tied in well with the closing credits.

The CGI looks good and the warrior-woman thing was great because it never had to call attention to itself.

I’m with Andrew on this. It’s certainly got its flaws – the plot is ultra-generic and the dialogue is super-cheesy, but as B-movie entertainment it’s great. There’s very little downtime, some great visuals and exciting action set-pieces. I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would.
