Team Mamo recaps the year 2016 in movers and shakers as the pop cultural landscape is wracked by celebrity deaths, digital doubles and orange-faced idiots. I’m not a fan of the US President elect. And it would be scary if the current president had a kill list over the years and no one even flinched.

Has someone else problems with downloading new episodes in iTunes?

Disney just scored a $50Million dollar pay-out because Carrie Fisher died before completing filming on Star Wars Ep.IX. Wondering if they will massively change the script, or just recreate her digitally, as they’ve already put their toe in that water with Rogue One.

The day Carrie Fisher died I already had plans to see Rogue One with some friends. It was quite intense seeing her on the screen for her cameo. Even more so for my friends who hadn’t seen Rogue One until then.

So yeah, coming out of the film I was already thinking about whether they will use her in Episode IX. I’m going to guess ILM had to do a number of digital 3D scans of her in present age before de-aging her and for a younger Princess Leia. So I imagine ILM are already further ahead in making a digital General Leia Organa, than they were with Tarkin and Peter Cushing where they had to start from scratch.

Apparently the backup plan that ILM had for Tarkin if the digital Peter Cushing was too bad was to have him as a hologram as that would hide uncanny valley effect.

With that in mind, perhaps the way to do Carrie Fisher’s final Star Wars scene would be for Leia to send a final hologram to Luke, to bookend Episode IX with A New Hope.

Actually, I’m pretty sure they used another actress for a stand in for the Leia in R1 (maybe I’m mistaken?). I don’t think they did 3D scans of her and then de-aged her (again, I could be mistaken).

With that in mind, perhaps the way to do Carrie Fisher’s final Star Wars scene would be for Leia to send a final hologram to Luke, to bookend Episode IX with A New Hope.

This is an awesome idea. Somewhere in IX, just have a hologram of Leia, “Help us Luke; you’re our only hope!” Beautiful.

Looked it up and you’re right. It was Norwegian actress Ingvild Deila who played the part and then they used the same process as Peter Cushing using footage from A New Hope. I had wrongly assumed that the “de-aging process” had been used so many times in other movies with actors, that they would have gone that way with an actress who was alive and willing to work with them.

As for what Leia would tell Luke via hologram, I think using the exact same line as the hologram message for A New Hope would be a bit too on the nose. Still I like that idea and it being a way around the uncanny valley.

I’m also curious if ILM are paying attention to the criticisms of their digital Tarkin. Or are they and Lucasfilm just looking at the Box Office and considering it a success.

Happy new MAMO! Definitely as listener it’s always nice to find out there is a new MAMO episode available.

Especially after you guys a while back announced that there would be fewer episodes which then resulted in a month and half break between episodes. Every new episode is a happy surprise that the podcast is still going.

The Trump campaign had been advertising on pretty diverse TV programs all year it just targetted the ones with the correct thematic content.

Specifically targetted even.
