Mamo 457: OWN’d

Mamo!

Welcome back to Mamo! Join us for a far-ranging discussion that starts with Donald Trump, Devin Faraci, and complicity in rape culture; wraps its arms around Ava DuVernay’s 13th and Queen Sugar and the proper use of one’s “power list” capital; and gets, generally, into where we are right now.

I’m going to say that I have no sympathy for Devin Faraci’s social circle, at least the circle that knew him as something other than via over the internet. This was a social circle that by all accounts had a laugh after he sexually assaulted a woman. A social circle that seemingly thought so little of his drunken loutishness that they never thought of holding an intervention. They used to have videos of Faraci getting drunk and discussing movies, sometimes with uncomfortable looking female guests, back in the Badass Digest days of the website. Heck, Tim League still hasn’t publicly fired Faraci even after more revelations today. There has been a ton of enabling and bending over backwards for Faraci by that social circle over the years just because he can string some sentences together in a compelling manner. That social circle should be feeling uncomfortable today.

I’ve met Faraci a couple times. Both times were awkward experiences, where he didn’t seem to be actually listening to anyone talking to him. Now maybe I caught him on two “off nights” (separated by a year or more). Maybe. He also banned me from BadassDigest.com (before the rebranding to BirthMoviesDeath) for calling out some of his bullshit on Zack Snyder’s SUCKERPUNCH (I wasn’t a fan of the movie nor in Faraci’s particularly sycophantic writing on the film). I did occasionally read his stuff, and these recent years have felt like a bit of overcompensation, the never-ending quest of hits and traffic, but, then again this might be hindsight talking.

He was never a particularly great ambassador of online movie discussion, and I think, as Robert mentioned above, some of his behaviour was known, if not well documented, in the wider ‘movie nerd’ community.

I kinda felt sorry for Billy Bush for getting suspended until I saw this today on John Oliver.

His Canon Podcast is a frustrating listen. I often side with Faraci’s movie opinions, but his argumentative methods are so boorish that I subsequently relate to Amy Nicholson (whose film tastes don’t typically gel with mine). He does seem quite hypocritical regarding feminism vs. the SJW movement.

Not admitting guilt, but “not attempting denial” I guess is progress, especially when it’s just he-said/she-said and zero proof (that we know of). In our cynical world, any lawyer will tell you to “deny, deny, deny” when you’re guilty, but there’s no a shred of proof. So good for Devin? Nah..fuck that guy! The way he carefully worded his response is suspect. I think he remembers.

I must say it’s quite uncomfortable to listen to middle-aged men have an open conversation about consent. We were all in our teens & 20s during the 90’s/early 2000’s. Starting to wonder what Nuremberg post-Nazi Germany must’ve been? Most males acted more like Billy Bush than The Donald in that tape. It was a different time. In that respect, I hope Billy is eventually forgiven (if that’s all he did) or we’re all gonna have to hide out in Argentina as pig farmers.

I feel much better listening to a couple white privileged guys talk about race. That’s entertainment 😉

And another creep/shitstorm on the twitter-blogger-front: CHASE WHALE. Having done several rounds of the festival circuit, I fully expect the flies to keep dropping for bad/drunk/douchebag behaviour at film festivals.

That twitter account is no more. I’m glad I looked it up because I ended up finding tons of articles on Devin & the scandal. Variety, THR, Indiewire, etc. Had no idea he was this big a deal.

If what he saying is true, this could be a Oldboy typer scenario for him– Does not remember the act, but it ends up ruining his life. Terrible predicament for one to be in.

I always got the sense that he was more interesting in being smug and condescending than in actually providing good analysis. The Josh Barro of film criticism.
