Cinecast Episode 450 – My Hot Dogs Got Cold

Andrew and Kurt are Bourne again. And while both of them preferred the status quo (Bourne swam off into the moonlight, all was right with the amnesiac super-spy). It was 2007 when Matt Damon said he had no interest in coming back to do any more of these, but the power of Greengrass compels you! The power of Greengrass compels you!

So, here we are with the fifth film in the Bourne franchise, nearly a decade after Bourne popped up on the grid. Some of the principle cast returns, Greengrass is of course back with his shakiest of cams, and there is a whole slew of new and interesting actors added to the mix. Did the new film hit the mark or did it simply squander all the moolah and talent it had going for it? We discuss.

Then it is off to Montreal where Kurt gives the full recap all the films he caught and various sundry adventures he had during his ten-day gallop through the mega-sized genre fest. A small watch list includes Andrew finishing Netflix’ “Stranger Things” and Kurt revisiting the middle chapter of Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy. It is a monster-sized show, but one we think you will enjoy. Have at it!

Thanks guys for reading out my mail! Making that list didn’t take that long to be honest and I also have to thank ultimolee for his efforts as he’s made it possible for me to create that archive in the first place.
Also thanks to Kurt for his Romania report. You should now celebrate by watching some Cristian Mungiu movies!

The missing episode might be related to the Lonely Place to Die. You promised a donor to review this film and some other one.

We have to do a ‘we promised things but didn’t do them’ episode: TYRANNOSAUR, THE LONELIEST PLANET would be the two titles you are thinking of…but there may be more.

Kurt and Andrew, have you watched any Mungiu films? I watched BEYOND THE HILLS today which is outstanding http://letterboxd.com/howiemunson/film/beyond-the-hills/
I was joking about Mungiu after the Romanian trip but seriously, that movie even exceeds 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS and 2 DAYS and would make great conversation for sure. Huge recommendation!

I’ve only seen 4 Weeks…, and liked it a lot, I should go through his other films.

He’s doing the Malick and doesn’t direct that much unfortunately. So it’s kind of easy going through his filmography. Very much looking forward to GRADUATION… I bet you might catch it in a festival.

A few of my thoughts in regards to Fantasia:
– I agree that The Lure is quite great (it ended up being my favourite film of the festival)
– Kurt’s enjoyment of We Are the Flesh somewhat disturbs me.
– I think Kurt took Trash Fire a bit too seriously, since the film is obviously meant as dark comedy and religious satire.
– Kurt missed one hell of an entertaining Shaw Brothers film
– Probably my hidden gem of Fantasia would be an indie drama called Some Freaks, which was the final film I saw (and I ended up putting it in my top three).

As I do with all the Festivals I go to, I put together a Letterboxd list of all the films I saw – http://letterboxd.com/spkx/list/fantasia-2016/

Is THE LURE a remake of the silent film from the 20s? Maybe Kurt mentioned this and I missed it.

LOL! No.

The Polish title of the film is Córki Dancingu, which roughly translates to The Daughter of a Dance

Interesting. They both have the same title and loosely the same plot of a “love triangle” and involves strippers/dancers/flappers.

There’s no love triangle in The Lure.

Here is a trailer for The Lure. There’s no subtitles, but you should get an idea what the film is about. – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y2N6Q4dbdY

Here is another (more NSFW) trailer that was made for Sundance – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKBMAAqZ7no
