Mamo 450: Christ II – The Revenge

Mamo!

JESUS IS BACK AND HE’S READY TO KICK ROMAN ASS! And other sequels no one asked for. As think piece writers in general catch up to what Mamo was saying eleven years ago, we discuss the latest brace of underperforming (?) number twos, plus Warcraft, Star Trek, and the return of Mel Gibson.

On China, one needs to remember that China takes a huge slice of the box office revenue. Still good business, though.

Let’s say a well respected, creative director made Passion of The Christ. Same reaction from you guys to that film and news of a sequel? I’m curious.

Yes – it’s the vision of the film itself and not the filmmaker that I have trouble with.

Passion of the Christ is an incredibly well made film. And certainly a difficult one to make and watch. Zero need for a sequel though. Unless it’s a Justin Lin / Christopher Nolan co-created feature about Jesus battling for three days in the dusts of hell to escape. That would be bananas.

I haven’t seen it, but can certainly understand that there is craft there, Gibson (for all his many faults) has a great command of cinematic language. That said as a director he’s consistently off model in terms of the choices he makes, at least for me.

“off model”

Can you elaborate/clarify? Not being snarky, genuinely not sure what you mean.

His storytelling choices often don’t work for me. Braveheart is at least an hour too long, passion focuses on gore and suffering instead of history and context. It’s not about how he depicts, it’s about what he chooses to focus on that turn me off to some degree.

This was the MAD TV Terminator parody that I was reminded of. I’d watch it.

The Greatest Action Story Ever Told.

I wish Mel Gibson was the one remaking Ben-Hur.

As someone whose Birthday is May the Fourth your condemnation of the Star-Wars-ification of that day warmed my heart.
