Was it that a take on Black Widow wasn’t ready? Or were the rumors correct in that Isaac Perlmutter, Marvel’s CEO was holding such a movie back? As the rumors suggest that he also had a hand in why the Marvel women characters were missing in merchandise, beyond a few figures in the collectors market, because he didn’t believe it would sell. As Perlmutter had a background in the toy business going back to 1990. Joss Whedon was asked about the lack of Marvel women and Black Widow movie last December as part of the Q&A at Oxford Union. He said something along the lines that he pushed for it and that Kevin Feige was on board but it was tough time getting the bean counters on board. Whedon smartly didn’t mention Isaac Perlmutter ny name, but it sounded like it was him.

Now what has changed recently? As of last August Kevin Feige no longer reports to Marvel CEO Isaac Perlmutter. Feige now reports to Disney Studio Chief Alan Horn and is now able to say put a Black Widow movie into the schedule if he wants. Also recently the Inhumans movie got knocked off the schedule and once again going off of rumors, it was that Isaac Perlmutter wanted an Inhumans movie and gave Feige Captain Marvel if he would put Inhumans on the schedule.

These days just about anything is printed in entertainment news without verifying it. So perhaps this is wrong and Marvel was really waiting for the right take. However, based off of stories of Perlmutter it sounds like him.

And now today there comes an interview with Shane Black where he says the villain in Iron Man 3 was supposed to be female, but that he got a memo saying that villain wouldn’t sell as a toy and had to be changed. Shane Black also says that it’s not Kevin Feige but Marvel corporate. Shane Black doesn’t say that it’s Isaac Perlmutter, that he never was told who made the decision in Marvel, but when the interview brings up Perlmutter it sounds like he agrees.

I know nothing about the conversation going on here… just chiming in to say the villain switcheroo thing in Iron Man 3 was genius. Still my favorite Marvel film. Carry on.

Iron Man 3 and its villain switcheroo actually marked the point I started getting tired of the Marvel Studios formula.

With the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy, and to a lesser extent Avengers: Age of Ultron, the entirety of Phase Two was not at all as compelling as Phase One and I fear Phase Three might be going down a similar path.

Don’t get me wrong, I still plan on watching the films, though I’m starting to get a lot more critical of the direction they are going.

Interesting you feel that way. For me, that was one of the moments that a Marvel movie was actually doing something different and interesting. Well that, and there’s barely any Iron Man in your Iron Man movie. Up until then, all of these Marvel movies were basically the same, boring structure: Guy/gal gets a power, struggles with personal demons, throws around a bad guy for 45 minutes, the end. That gets old.

Having Clark Kent* just pal around with a ten year-old kid for the better part of your movie only to discover that the villain is a stoner who has no idea what is going on made that movie fun and interesting.

*Yes I realize I mixed universes here, but I did that to make a point.

I’m talking about this interview.

Basically Guy Pearce’s character in Iron Man 3, Aldrich Killian who turns out the be the Mandarin was supposed to be a woman. Marvel had the script changed so that Killian was a man instead because of worries about toy sales. It sounds like the switcheroo with the Mandarin would have still happened in the script, just that a woman rather than a man was going to be behind it all.
