I have not listened to the cast yet, but I will tonight. I re-watched The Force Awakens today, Star Wars day. Here are my thoughts.

My opinion remains the same from when I saw it in theaters. The film is well made from a technical standpoint. Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo are great characters.

But the film has so many references great and small to the original trilogy that your enjoyment comes down to how you feel about those references. To me it crosses the line from homage into crutch.

Among the many references I noticed in my first two viewings, I picked up another one this time. Chewie growls at BB-8 and sends him running the other direction, just like the remote droid in the Death Star in episode IV. I’m a Star Wars fan, that stuff is in there for me. But when the film is chalk full of OT references, it stops being cute and starts to feel tired.

TFA feels bound to follow OT conventions. Though understandable from a commercial perspective, I find OT slavishness disappointing.
