The first thing that crossed my mind when I spotted the Matts at the Scotiabank Theatre last night was “How many times has Matt Brown already seen this film?”

I stayed off social media for about a week before seeing THE FORCE AWAKENS and I am quite happy that I did. Now, for the torture of trying to avoid talking about the film to other people (particularly my girlfriend, who decided to wait until seeing the film, despite going to an marathon of all the films on Thursday).

It was hard to know who was more crazy. Me… or everyone else. I was laughing at prognosticators making predictions of $1 BILLION domestic gross for Force Awakens. Now I am humbled. Opening Weekend of around $250 million can have HOBBIT multiples. Multiples of 3.6x (Unexpected Journey) gives us $900 mil. Multiples of 4.7x (Battle of the Five Armies) gives us $1.175 BILLION.

As you said, the question is whether this movie connects to the YOUNGLINGS! There is no competition for 8-year old eyeballs for like 2 months. Also this movie is connecting with female audiences more than ever in the franchise. Female audiences and under 25 gave this an A+ Cinemascore. May the Force be with us all.

Neither of my kids were overly impressed with the film, but had a good time watching it.

Who would with a Sith Lord sitting next to them?

Actually, they sat a seat or two down from us in the partially fully cinema (close enough for willem to loudly whisper, “It’s a Trap!” when Ackbar showed up on screen.

(I wasn’t giving out negative vibes when I was watching it, it’s fast paced and beautiful to look out. LJ was equally unimpressed, if you ask….Abrams in hindsight is a bugger.)

I also assumed they wouldn’t want to disappoint their Vater. 🙂

The opening weekend is already being downgraded to $220 million as Saturday matinees haven’t been as big as they thought they would be. I think this movie will be hugely front-loaded. Star Wars is a series known for it’s big reveals since Vader first told Luke that he is his father. The prequels didn’t have those twists or reveals but going backwards instead of forwards that is partly expected. Disney with it’s secrecy have made it very clear that the new movie has some big twists, that people should avoid until they get into the theatre. As a result I think there is more of a pressure for fans to see it as quickly as possible.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the movie will be hugely successful, but I don’t think this $1 billion dollar domestic gross is attainable.

Oh, it’s definitely front-loaded but it’s no Deathly Hallows II. Let’s not forget this opening week box office number is just icing on the cake. The real movie-going season starts from DEC 25. Even if it doesn’t make a BILLION, it’s going to do some damage to James Cameron’s pride.

It just made $40 million this past Monday, destroying the record of the top Monday gross of $27 million from Spider-Man 2. I take it back and think it has a good shot at beating $1 billion.

My social media feed is filled with people going to see it 2nd, 3rd, 4th time. I don’t remember when people have been this crazy about a movie.

In regarding when can spoilers from the movie be openly talked about (so ignoring spoiler tags), I think Monday is way too soon.

It’s the holiday season, people have a lot of commitments, work parties, get together with family & friends and all sorts of stuff. Not everyone can fit in a screening this weekend. It doesn’t take much just to add a spoiler warning before talking about a spoiler. That on social media (Twitter, Facebook) spoilers should be avoided for some time.

Also I’ll be surprised if Hot Toys make an announcement next week. Disney have been very specific about there being several waves of toys for The Force Awakens and that they would be avoiding spoilers in the first wave. That Hot Toys likely had to sign something from Disney to avoid such spoilers until a certain time and I doubt barely a week in is when that contract allowed. Especially looking at the lengths Disney has already gone, pushing the premiere and reviews to the week the movie debuts.

HO HO HO. $248 million is the magic number. I get bonus points. Breakdown :: Thurs (57m), Fri (62m), Sat (68m), Sun(60.5m). Great Word of Mouth – no doubt.

Matt Brown Says that this is J.J. Abrams’ best “simulation.” And Price says, “…transcends being a simulation and just becomes a movie. I think it would be easy to be dismissive what he was able to accomplish here. I think in some ways he was able to go beyond… ”

Exactly what I think too. This is without doubt the best J.J. has ever been. This level of CLEAR Visual Structure he could not accomplish before.

** The prologue – at night. The Epilogue – at day. The 1st act – Orange desert. The 2nd act – Green Jungle. The 3rd act – Blue Snow. Done even better than CHRIS NOLAN who mastered this style of visual structure in Inception, Interstellar etc.
** INTERIOR and EXTERIOR sequences are timed and changed beautifully. DESERT – Spaceship Corridors – JUNGLE – CANTINA – RUINS – Slick metallic Interiors…
** MAZ KANATA (short) at High Angle, SNOKE (giant) at low angle. Maz at left giving force advice about LIGHT side to Rey, Snoke at right giving Force advice about dark side to Kylo.
** First time Rey faces Kylo among trees during daytime and GREEN. Last time Rey challenges Kylo among trees during dark and BLUE. J.J. even mirrors the SWAMP-LIKE (CAVE) atmos from EMPIRE STRIKES BACK when KYLO REN appears to Rey (like Vader).
** That One-shot of TOP GUN Piloting by POE as he takes out all the enemies surrounding FINN is just incredible and fun.
** The STORYTELLING POV switching is incredible. From POE’s POV of destructive Storm troopers at the beginning to FINN’s POV.

I can go on and on.

I have seen the movie only ONCE and so many images just got burned into my brain. I wanted to hate the movie but I could not.

– This is an interesting thing to note. Thanks for pointing it out.

– I didn’t notice this on my first viewing as I was focused on Finn. But yeah, I followed that X-Wing through the entire shot in my subsequent viewings and you’re right, it’s fantastic fun!
