Hi gang! We heard the news about Wes Craven’s passing and wanted to honor his memory in the best way we knew how: by pitting his films against each other in a bonus “battle” episode of AFTER THE HYPE.
WHICH OF OUR FAVORITES MAKE THE CUT?
It was tough to pick the best Wes Craven film from our selection, but we did. Listen to the episode to find out which one we picked!
SCREAM – BRYAN’S CHOICE!
Iconic opening with Drew Barrymore. Wes Craven’s “fuck you, I still got this.” Created a new icon in horror. MTV generation. Resurgence of the genre. Felt real again.
THE HILLS HAVE EYES – JON’S CHOICE!
Restraint in key elements. Rape underplayed and the back stories aren’t convoluted. Cruelty to all characters. Villains get the slasher treatment.
LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT – RYAN’S CHOICE!
You get to see criminal backstory. Classic exploitation film. Protagonists gone by half way point. The goofy cops provide relief to keep you going.
SERPENT IN THE RAINBOW – SIERRA’S CHOICE!
Underrated. A true zombie movie. Accurate depiction of voodoo. Nerve-wrecking burial alive scene. Great FX. Mummy tits. Bill Pullman gets punched in the mouth. Dream sequences that get referenced in later films.
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET – CHEWIE’S CHOICE!
Best known for this. Gave us Krueger. Most iconic villain in horror. Beyond other slasher films, Krueger doesn’t wear a mask.
NEW NIGHTMARE – JOSH’S CHOICE!
Important in that Craven saved Freddy. Takes it back to the original idea. Invents meta in horror.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN DOING?
The part of the show where we catch up with what everyone is doing.
