Cinecast Episode 408 – Enjoy the Ineptitude

And so it is that we weed through the dregs that are the end of August. So much so, that Kurt refuses to join us for the beginning of this episode in lieu of getting to hang out with Guillermo del Toro for a screening of an early Hitchcock picture (more on that later…). In Kurt’s absence, Matt and Andrew lament our experiences with Nima Nourizadeh’s American Ultra and Aleksander Bach’s piece of shit known as Hitman: Agent 47.

But what better way to rekindle the passion, than to look back over the past half decade (kinda) and embrace (or berate) each other for our top ten picks for the “best” films of the last 5+ years?

Then we feel the need to at least mention a title or two (both old and new) in the Watch List – A moral panic crime thrillers, Nazi Germany and the latest power-house performances from Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro. So, love and FFs (you’ll have to listen to decode that acronym) all around then, folks!

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening!

On the Dogtooth love: Lanthimos says he hadn’t seen the film but there was a Mexican film from 1973 called El Castillo de la Pureza/The Castle of Purity that is similar in a lot of ways. More people should see it.

I put together a top 50 of the decade a few months ago http://letterboxd.com/ultimo/list/top-50-of-the-demi-decade-2010-14/

This is an exceptionally diverse list, Ultimolee. I don’t agree with all of the choices (and haven’t seen several of them myself) but this is the type of list I like to look through.

That reminds me, I really need to rewatch “The Man From Nowhere” again. Haven’t seen it since it first came out. Not as crazy about Lee Jeong-Beom’s followup “No Tears for the Dead” though.

I’m probably still supposed to be under press embargo, but it’s been about a month now so I’m going to go out and say it – Lanthimos’ English latest, The Lobster, is brilliant. It’s probably not to everyone’s tastes, but I loved it.

I am surprise that Kurt did not include The Counselor in his list.

So Close. It’s in the HMs.

I made that decade list last year it went like this:

No Order

Zero Dark Thirty
Drug War
All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace
13 Assassins
Spring Breakers
Nightcrawler
Upstream Color
Why Don’t You Play in Hell
Carlos
Citizenfour

Excited to listen to this all in a go on my next work shift.

Andrew James

I had SO MUCH fun with 13 Assassins. And I kinda forgot about Carlos. It probably wouldn’t make the top ten, but certainly in my honorable mention list. So great.

13 Assassin, Drug War and Fury Road are all better action movies than Fast Five in the last 10 years 😉 Also Warriors of the Rainbow which is in like 12th or 13th spot.

Andrew James

Nope nope and nope. Haven’t seen Warriors of Rainbow. Though I do like all of the ones you mention – especially 13 Assassins.

Matt Gamble

So is every other action movie made in the last 5 years.

I don’t know if this decision would be considered “prisoner-of-the-moment” because it’s only been 3 months since its release. But in terms of artistic value AND re-watch value, I’d have to say my favorite/best film of the half decade is Mad Max: Fury Road. I think it’s that one movie where if someone says it’s “just okay” or didn’t like it, I’ll pretty much dismiss that person’s taste in films.

I’ve been sitting on Saragossa Manuscript for ages. Now I’m gonna have to suck it up and watch it. Fuckin Gamble!

Kurt

Saragossa Manuscript is excellent. We did a MOVIE CLUB PODCAST on it, paired up with Tarsem’s THE FALL.

I am prepared to accept your apology after you watch it.

I’ve been sent new blu-ray re-releases of both Saragossa Manuscript and The Hourglass Sanatorium to review. After hearing you guys talk about them before I’m very excited to check them out.

Matt Gamble

I know you are in the UK but who is putting them out? I must have these.

David Brook

It’s a small independent label called Mr Bongo Films.

The Hourglass Sanitorium – http://www.mrbongo.com/products/the-hourglass-sanatorium-restored-edition-1973

The Saragossa Manuscript – http://www.mrbongo.com/products/the-saragossa-manuscript-restored-edition-1973-dvd

On the site it says they’re region ‘all’ so you’re in luck. They’re pretty cheap too. If they won’t post to the US let me know and I can maybe post them over for you.

I should love Scott Pilgrim both the comic and the movie but the part of me where that would reside was already filled up by a little thing called FLCL

Haven’t completely thought it out, but a few movies that would could crack my list but didn’t come at all here would be Inside Llewyn Davis, Take Shelter, and possibly A Separation.

Very interesting lists as a whole though.

Andrew James

Need to just buy Llewyn Davis. Deserves a rewatch and I agree it’s great. Nice call on A Separation, I’m surprised I forgot about Incendies.
