Cinecast Episode 394 – Sculpting, Not Puppeteering

Cinecast Classic-style! The same great taste you remember and love. We heed not at the beck and call to assemble with Avengers this week. Mother’s Day is coming, so we need to talk about Mommies. And a Mommy we talk about! Xavier Dolan’s work of wonder, Mommy, is at the top of the heap this week and I can’t think of an episode in which both Kurt and Andrew are as blown away as they are while discussing this picture. From there, the guys talk about “Game of Thrones” (Sandsnakes, Raegar Targatheon, Harpys and Parabolani) and cap off their joint reviews with the not-quite-great Robot & Frank. Quentin Tarantino makes another appearance on the wath list, as does Ender Wiggin, Big Bird and AIDS.

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening!

Sort of funny that Cinecast is the only podcast of the four I’m downloading right now that’s NOT about AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.

I watched I AM BIG BIRD as part of Hot Docs last year. I liked it.

The film will be opening in Toronto at the Bloor Cinema on May 29.

The Mad King (Aerys) and Rhaegar are not the same character. Rhaegar was Aerys son and Barristan Selmy, having served three kings, reckons Rhaegar would have been better than all of them.

As for Barristan, neither him or Grey Worm are involved in any of these ambushes in the books so what happens with them now is anyone’s guess. I don’t know if it has been made clear by the show, but ser Barristan Selmy is one the most legendary knights and fighters in this world. Even at his old age, he’s supposed to be one of the best, so if they take him out like this, I think it’s a bit underwhelming for him to go out to a pack of rebels. I know in one of the early episodes when Cersei and Joffrey “fires” him from the kings guard, he tells ser Meryn Trant and the other kings guards in the room that he could still cut through them and it’s true.

I know nothing, Patrik C.

Well there are a lot of characters to keep track of, and the Targaryens are always mentioned in stories so when you don’t have a face to go with the name, it’s an easy enough mistake to make. This is where book knowledge is very handy =)

Also the implication from all the diverse tales of Rhaegar is supposed to be the nature of myth and that while the common story in the North is that he abducted Lyanna the truth may not quite be that.

Oh and yeah the Moat Cailin shot is just that Brienne mention she knows away around it because they know the ultimate final goal of Littlfinger & Sansa is Winterfell.

So there is no bridging shot. One scene they are meeting the Boltons at Moat Cailin, the next they are in Winterfell…

The show only ever shows Moat Cailin from that hill, no one is ever actually inside it, everyone meets at Winterfell

Regarding the music in Mommy, all the songs are from the mixtape his dad made that he mentions… early on you see Steve pick up the mixtape and the first song on it is Sarah McLachlan’s Building a Mystery, and then midway I think the mother mentions the one song reminding Steve of this trip they all took together in happier times. It helps represent the father you don’t see, gives him a character.

Yes, I recall the first look at that before the Sarah McLaughlin track. THis of course puts MOMMY in good mix-tape double bill territory with Guardians of the Galaxy!

Kurt I was wondering if you’ve ever seen Runaway Train with Jon Voight and Eric Roberts it would be a nice b side for the train themed movie club. Also eric roberts does a bang up pre-forrest gump performance

A triple with Runaway Train was certainly considered, it was even discussed briefly on that last MOVIE CLUB PODCAST episode. There are so many great movies on trains!

SPOILER ALERT FOR GAME OF THRONES

Having finally caught up with Game Of Thrones I’m glad I’m not the only one to think it’s lost its compelling nature. I’m finding the current season to be a little plodding, predictable and lacking in sparkle.

It seemed clear from early on that Dragon Lady was messing up and Tyrion would be her wise adviser. Cersei empowering a Puritan sect just to get her own back on her daughter-in-law was entirely in character and a teensy bit dull.

I think this season needs a Red Wedding, GOT dna type bloodletting event to remove a few of the main characters to provide a bit of unpredictability.

Maybe Tyrion could be advising Dragon Lady gangbusters and turning her fortunes around only for a dragon to sneeze and burn him to a crisp.

The only truly entertaining bit for me was when Tyrion advised someone on how to get even more luck from a dwarf. If the predictability is going to continue maybe they could introduce some humour to help things along.

It’s not quite last season of Dexter bad but it definitely needs a shot of adrenalin, for me.

Plus, am I the only person to think that the writers have decided to replace the zombie woman mentioned on this bog at the end of last season with Cersei’s Viktor Frankenstein adviser bringing the mountain or daddy Lannister back to life? I get the impression that this is meant to be a big surprise
