Cinecast Episode 344 – I Hate Metaphor

Nothing too flashy this week, just spoiler talk as “True Detective” season one wraps up in all its celestial glory and our 1984 Project continues on with Neil Jordan’s fascination with lycanthropy; or is it the female menstruation cycle? Either way, Stephen Rea’s head floats in a bucket of milk and Angela Lansbury talks about the bastard children of priests in The Company of Wolves. Matt Gamble shouts out to listeners on some needed feedback for the porn parody pardox while Kurt dives into François Truffaut. Andrew flirts with Prohibition and Keanu Reeves sitting in a director chair. For movie tech geeks, Criterion stumbling a bit on their transfers is also discussed with World on a Wire. Next week will be and Wes Anderson.

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening!

The optimal solution to Matt’s dilemma is to have James watch the pornos with his mother and have her guest on the podcast.

Ah! Should’ve waited til May for the Revenge of the Nerds talk. Hits Blu-ray on May 6.

As I recall, Revenge of the Nerds is a well structured movie with distinctive characters and jokes that land, that’s impossible to defend these days. I don’t know if it was very defensible then.

One of the things that pleased me about TRUE DETECTIVE was that the thread that broke the case was present in Episode 1, just something that they overlooked.

Andrew, have you seen Boardwalk Empire? Sounds like it would be a good companion piece to Prohibition. Thanks for mentioning the doco I will be checking it out.

Good to hear some talk about The Company of Wolves; it was one of the films, along with Blade Runner and Brazil, that I watched repeatedly on VHS when I was 14. Stunning film, I loved the overripe nature of it; the fairytale feverdream quality.

The episodic nature is due to the fact that it’s based on Angela Carter’s collection of short stories, The Bloody Chamber. Like the film, the book attempts to bring out the underlying sensuality and themes of sexual awakening in folk and fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood, with a feminist slant. It is 100% about sex (as are the original fairy tales).

Although I have the DVD steelbook, I rarely watch it now due to sheer over familiarity. I kinda wore out watching it when I was a teen. That said, it’ll always have a place on my all-time top ten list. No question.

I think David Warner’s contribution to the film is also worth a nod (and Brian Glover) (and Danielle Dax!).

I have not listened yet but I didn’t notice anything wrong with the World on a Wire transfer.

Taking into account that it was

a) Shot for TV
and
b) Shot in 16mm
