Cinecast Episode 341 – The Pleasure Port

Perhaps the reboot of RoboCop (beware of SPOILERS!) isn’t quite as horrible and unnecessary as we all feared. Perhaps it’s chock full of good ideas updating its presence for the new millennium… or perhaps not. Matt Fabramble crosses international borders to join the Cinecast this week to discuss. We also Lynch the sci-fi fantasy cluster-feck that is Dune, in our ongoing 1984 project. “True Detective” keeps on trucking as well and continues to excel. Kurt and Andrew tackle the nature of time itself and the various dark dimensions swirling about humanity. The Watch List includes a whole lot of debauchery with sex masters and gigolos, hot Helen Hunt, crying on the inside and the best looking black and white film ever made. Oh, and apparently we’re not done hashing out LEGOgate. We’ve done it before and we’re destined to do it again. And again. And again. And over again.

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening!

I also recant. “The Straight Story” is the most unLynchian of Lynch’ films (that I’ve seen).

The Straight Story and Elephant Man stand out for me, both beautiful pieces of humanism.

“why did they flash the piece numbers on screen?”

Pretty simple. It’s the same as Kato and Daredevil or Neo or whoever looking into the world, seeing it differently. A Master Builder sees what they have to work with. Iit also works as a visual setup so when Emmet finally develops the abilities they can use it as visual shorthand to know he has realized his Master Builder ability. And it’s also just a joke about the lego boxes and their piece numbers.

Got it.

Oh and btw, since you called it out 😛

The Kragl research, I knew all the references off hand except one. I am not particularly proud of knowing the Big Bang Theory one.

But I’ll turn it around on ya – how did YOU know those examples? I immediately assumed on reading that post back then that you did a quick google of “release the kraken tv quote”.

I know, I know. It’s fun to tease.

Enjoying your discussion of True Detective these last couple of episodes. Wondering tho, what’s your take on Marty’s “bad” daughter. It seemed pretty clear to me that she was molested as a young child. And is there a link between her, her grandfather and the murders?

Kurt Halfyard

Whoa. I wouldn’t think that at all, I think that is more to underscore Marty’s misogynistic rages and bad parenting.

Sean Kelly

No, I don’t think she was molested. However, I believe it was briefly mentioned in episode 4 that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and saw Marty with his mistress.
