Adam Curtis and John Zaritsky to Receive Honours at 21st Hot Docs Film Festival

Hot Docs has chosen English documentary filmmaker and journalist Adam Curtis as the recipient of its 2014 Outstanding Achievement Award. In honour of the award, a retrospective will be screened during the 21st annual Festival, which runs from April 24 to May 4, 2014.

“Adam Curtis blends journalism and cinematic storytelling to critique media and power in society with an unmatched style and complexity,” says Hot Docs director of programming Charlotte Cook. “It’s our pleasure to be able to showcase the work of a master of our craft and to celebrate his incredible contribution, not only to the art form, but to our culture as a whole.”

Adam Curtis is a multiple BAFTA award-winning documentary filmmaker and journalist. Known for his visual style, he favours exploring themes of power and its function in society, allowing viewers to arrive at new perspective on sociology, philosophy and political history.  He’s been closely associated with the BBC throughout his career, and currently writes a blog for the public service broadcaster.

John Zaritsky will also be honoured at this year’s Hot Docs Festival, with the Focus On retrospective. An annual program showcasing the work of a mid-career Canadian Filmmaker, this year the focus will be on Zaritsky, who will be in attendance at the festival.

“To be able to celebrate John Zaritsky is a delight,” said Hot Docs’ director of programming Charlotte Cook. “John is an iconic Canadian filmmaker whose career spans more than thirty years and his work is broad and rich. We are thrilled to be able to honour him at this year’s festival.”

Hot Docs will screen Zaritsky’s ROMEO AND JULIET IN SARAJEVO as part of the retrospective, in partnership with Toronto Public Library’s One Book program. This year’s selected title is The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway. One Book is a city-wide book club as part of the library’s annual Keep Toronto Reading Festival, a celebration of books, running April 1-31.

The full roster of films in the 2014 Outstanding Achievement Award Retrospective as well as the Focus On Retrospective will be announced in March.
