Mamo 2014 #337: Porn Me King Call Vogel

Remember the days when a movie like Jack Ryan would come out, do whatever business it would do (or not do), and we would get together and analyze the project in depth in terms of why the audiences were (or weren’t) responding to it? These aren’t those days. A potpourri episode of Mamo ensues! Ryan! Bats/Supes! Marvel! Ebert! Armond! Time Bandits! And more.

JACK RYAN was very generic….but I liked it.

Me too! It was an old school type spy thriller, complete with Bad Russian Man. I’d be happy to see them do a second movie though by the looks of it, that’s unlikely to happen.

Thor 2 made $632 million worldwide, which is Marvel’s 3rd top grossing movie after Avengers & Iron Man 3. So I would be quite surprised if they didn’t make an Thor 3. Yes, they don’t need to keep making Thor movies, but it feels like there is still so much untapped potential in what they could do with a Thor movie. Also with the way they ended things in Thor 2, I would be surprised if there isn’t some sort of continuation.

As for the Jack Ryan, despite mentioning last MAMO that the Jack Ryan movie was coming out soon, I really thought it was a month or two away. Despite being somewhat aware of the movie, no one that I brought it up to was even slightly aware there was another Jack Ryan movie in the works, let alone that it had just come out. I don’t know what kind of advertising campaign they had, but don’t think it was any good. Not that people are begging for another Jack Ryan movie, but it helps if people know that your movie exists.

BTW, I highly recommend checking out FROZEN while it’s still in theatres. The film is NOT about the snowman.

Can you give us a heads-up which years you’ll cover in the do-over oscar podcast?
So far you only mentioned 73,83 and 93 (whats with the 3’s btw?)
I’d really like to watch all the (nominated) movies before listening.

At this time the episodes planning to be recorded are ’73, ’83 and ’93.

I believe there’s a second batch being recorded later in February, for ’77, ’96 and ’02.

FROZEN has grandeur, seriously fucking great grandeur ….. for the first 5 minutes. Then it goes to pot. It’s all just kind of Disney proving that they can still make a Disney Musical, with out much in the line of ‘NEW’ favouring an approach that could be described as SOLID (a late movie twist of sorts is not that daring or even particularly interesting.)

But the first 5 minutes. That’s solid stuff.

On the ‘just STOP, WAIT, and make a better movie’ –> SKYFALL is perhaps the BEST example of this. That worked out.
