Cinecast Episode 323 – The Porno Monologues

Always a pleasure having guests and it just doesn’t get much more pleasurable than bringing aboard Jim Laczkowski; one half of the dynamic duo of The Director’s Club Podcast. Today Jim brings aboard SPOILER talk to three movies we’ll be reviewing at length: a not quite Days of Thunder movie, a not “eye-rolling” troubled teens film and a not bad for a first time director picture. We move quickly from Ron Howard to Mario Bava to Christian Slater to Joe Swanberg to full franchise Fast and Furious. And for extra kicks we throw in a little bit of “calling down the thunder” when it comes to Kurt and Andrew’s taste in animated films. Quality show this time around – and thanks for JL for helping make it so.

As always, please join the conversation by leaving your own thoughts in the comment section below and again, thanks for listening!

A discussion about Dog Day Afternoon and not one mention of John Cazale – or did I miss it?

You missed it! (I don’t talk about his early death, but I do talk about just how damn good that actor is up on screen! Magnificent performance.)

So my favorite thing about Tokyo Drift is that it follows the basic structure of your classic Martial Arts film, if you swapped out the Kung Fu for Driving & Drifting completely with the obligatory segment when they go off into the mountains so the main character can be taught to drift better.

Also what I will about Justin Lin the most is that in the later films he became absolutely amazing at building character and relationships through action scenes without dialogue. The way character would organically and effortless use their skills together in various ways was really amazing and there is one section where Han saves Giselle in the big central chase in Furious 6 that is like a 5 minute scene that is amazing and all done through action and teamwork.

Yeah the character building throughout the story is seriously genius. Sure it might be a little bit on the obvious and corny side, but the way he introduces new people and phases them out and brings them back and weaves relationships seemingly out of nowhere so they are totally believable and even emotional for the audience.

You guys are reading WAY too much into DON JON than it really deserves.

The film is so sleazy in the first half that I essentially stopped caring what happened to Jon when it started getting somewhat decent later on.

Oh and Kurt, models in Carl’s Jr commercials is NOT a made-up thing: http://www.youtube.com/user/CarlsJr

Every time an obscure sport, sports movie is mediocre my dream of a competitive swimming movie dwindles. As a former competitive swimmer I have a dozen ideas, all of which will never get made the more “Rushes,” there are.

It will be screening a little late to watch in time for the Movie Club, but I just noticed that Possession will be playing at the Bell Lightbox on November 23

I gotta say thanks to Kurt for talking up Perfect Blue so highly. I hadn’t heard of it prior to this and decided to put it in my Netflix queue. Finally got around to it and it was no less than amazing. I loved the heel out of it. I have Paprika on is way now and hope that your praise of that pans out as well.

Tony Damico That is a big part of why we do what we do.  Happy to make other folks happy in this regard.  Cheers.
