I understand that there is some Hollywood rule out there that all Hero-Journey-Blockbuster(tm) trailers have to look alike. I understand that if you have Harrison Ford (Even his crotchety not terribly engaging current self) in your movie that you might as well use his voice to sell your movie. What I do not understand is whether Gavin Hood aims to preserve the tone of Ender’s Game, very much from a young (if extraordinarily gifted) child’s point of view, instead of indulging in noisy action blockbuster familiarity.
Two things: Haliee Steinfeld (the young lead from the Coen’s remake of True Grit) goes a fair way in confirming her acting ability with nothing more than a single glance on screen. And, it is delightful to see Viola Davis back in her Solaris science fiction mode; she should be in more science fiction films.
The boys, including Ben Kingsley in Mr. Nobody styled facial tats, are less compelling, as are the explosions. You’re mileage may vary.
Resident culture snob.
