• Trailer: Evil Dead

A few things to keep in mind before you watch the trailer for the Evil Dead remake. For one, it’s produced by both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, who both have said that they have been a part of the process from beginning to end. Secondly, they’re dropping the trademark Raimi zaniness and going for a more straight horror. Despite being a fan of the original three, I haven’t really been following production on this much, as the whole idea of it hasn’t really interested me.

As for the trailer, it does seem that the movie has some distinct Evil Dead-ness to it – but it most definitely being given the modern horror movie makeover. For some, this will be an instant turn off. I remain cautious, but mostly indifferent. I know my Evil Dead trilogy sitting on my DVD shelf isn’t going anywhere. I do appreciate that they changed the character names, so there is no Ash and maybe that’ll make it easier for Evil Dead fanatics to swallow. But it remains to be seen.

The film hits North American theaters on April 12, 2013. What are your thoughts on this first trailer?

With zero campiness and without a charismatic Ash-like lead, I’m not sure I really care to see this.

  2. Matt Gamble says:

The trailer seems to imply they are going to play the tree rape totally straight. Which seems like a bad idea.

I like each Evil Dead movie better, as they upped the comedy factor. Army Darkness remains one of my favorite movies with such a great mix of horror and comedy that only Shawn of the Dead has gotten close to.

That said, I think mixing horror & comedy is a hard mix to get right and I’m not sure I would trust a new director to pull that off. Straight up horror is easier for someone new to pull off in my opinion.

That said, I’m definitely curious about Evil Dead and perhaps it might make a semi-decent horror movie, but I doubt it will be anywhere as good as the original 3 movies. However, if the new Evil Dead movie makes a ton of money, perhaps it might convince Sam Raimi & Bruce Campbell to give it one more go with a proper Evil Dead 4.

If they’re playing it totally straight why is Diablo Cody involved? I’m neither excited nor offended by prospects of a reboot and the trailer doesn’t sway me much either way.

  5. Andrew James says:

What Robert said. I watch this and feel like I’ve seen enough. Whatever.

I don’t know if its just the trailer or the whole movie. But what we are shown feels aggressively unpleasant to me. If the Evil Dead remake is an exercise in extreme gore like Human Centipede 2 or Hostel I’m not interested.

On the plus side, it doesn’t feel like a phoned in Platinum Dunes remake. But that is not saying much.

I like the idea that there’s a new group of people instead of simply having someone come in and try to do their own version of Ash. That at least shows some level of ambition rather than trying to make a beat for beat remake, only glossier.

Obviously it still looks familiar, but there’s at least the potential that there may be interesting avenues to explore. You have Diablo Cody and apparently one of the female characters is supposed to be the main character, that suggests some interesting avenues to me. At least if it isn’t a humorless version without any filmmaking passion.

It’s been close to 20 years since Army of Darkness and Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi haven’t gotten screwed over by the producers, and, in fact, are producing the reboot. I don’t particularly feel more possessive of the franchise than those two. So, I figure, if its bad, I don’t have to see it and can just turn to my DVD shelf, and if it’s good, bonus!

Agreed. That was a smart move on their part, having a new group of people. Really, I’m surprised that they didn’t just make this in the same universe as the other Evil Deads and just come up with another story. This is, essentially, the third time that this story is going to be told after all, even if its different name this time around.

looks like shit. just make a fucking evil dead 4 while bruce is still young. i don’t get it. there’s enough “serious” horror movies out there. go watching fucking paranormal activity or insidious if you want shitty horror movies like this. oooooooooo… look… scary half-dead chick walking on all fours. fuck you, Raimi, you piece of shit.
