Read the Argo review in the TorontoStar has gotten my hopes up that the same conversation will take place on the show and Kurt will go off about America.
Yeah that article is a little weird. Canada is definitely sort of glossed over, but I never got the impression in the movie that Canada is totally overlooked or actually did nothing. It seemed clear (in the film) that the US gov’t was working closely with the Canadians to get passports, tickets, clearance, etc. etc.
After sending you that picture of Murray, I’m now thinking it’s actually from the set of FANTASTIC MR. FOX.
Ooops.
(still, great pic!)
I think you’re right. Actually, I think there’s a whole series of these out there.
OK, maybe not a whole series, but here’s another that is similar:
Argo is a crowdpleaser, a very eager-beaver crowd pleaser of a movie. It’s hard to fault it for wanting to be a good old fashioned Hollywood movie.
It doesn’t always work (note the car-chase on the Tehran airport runway is insane overkill) but it’s compelling enough stuff and I’m sure a big-hollywood filmmaker (excluding David Fincher with Zodiac) didn’t want to mount a story about Canadian’s pushing paper (with big stakes, mind you), which I’m sure hits closer to the truth of the matter.
We already had a Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and a Zodiac in the past 5 years (neither of them making crazy-profits), and despite the fact that I love that those films were made and how they were made, I don’t expect there to be a commercial spot for that type of filmmaking all that often, so Affleck makes a Hollywood movie. That’s completely fine, but not nearly as memorable or interesting to me personally.
Love those Murray/Anderson pics – and hey! Tomorrow “Moonrise Kingdom” comes out on DVD!
