I’ve been working on this 80′s Pop playlist for the better part of 8 years. I would say it’s pretty much complete with every major 80′s pop hit there was. If it’s not on here, it’s probably because I don’t like the song or just don’t know it.

    Thought I’d share.

If you’ve can come up with one I don’t have on here, please let me know!

“I Wanna Be Sedated” by the Ramones is from 1979.

I’m generally someone who listens to full albums not set lists, however ages ago when I get make a mixed CD, I put together a “Not quite the 80′s, 80′s mix”. Basically it was a mix of songs that often found on 80′s compilation album and are considered part of the 80′s culture despite being released in the late 70′s. There’s been cases, where I’ve seen over half of music of 80′s compilation album wasn’t from the 1980′s.

      So songs like:
Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure’
      Psycho Killer by Talking Heads
One Way or Another by Blondie
      Rock Lobster by the B-52′s
      London Calling by the Clash
      Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones
(Or just about any of the singles from those bands)
      Heroes by David Bowie

Also on the other side of the spectrum, Friday I’m In Love by The Cure, is often considered an 1980′s single despite coming out in 1992.

I like a lot of music, but the late 70′s and early 80′s with the punk and early new wave is one of my favorite musical eras.

You are missing a lot of great 80′s Pop hits. Some of them include:
New Order — True Faith; Blue Monday; Bizarre Love Triangle
David Bowie — Ashes to Ashes
Pet Shop Boys — West End Girls; It’s a Sin
Tom Tom Club — Genius of Love

    Joe Jackson – Steppin’ Out
New Order — True Faith; Blue Monday; Bizarre Love Triangle
David Bowie — Ashes to Ashes
Pet Shop Boys — West End Girls; It’s a Sin
Tom Tom Club — Genius of Love

It also depends on how you define “pop”. Would you classify The Smiths, The Cure, The Stone Roses as pop. Your list seems to include hip hop in your definition.

Mostly it’s just stuff I listened to on the local “pop” station growing up. I LOVE those three bands you mentioned but for some reason I don’t count those as “pop” – at least in the context of this particular list.

Yep, there are a few missing classics I’m sure, but it’s tough to get them all in. I’d get rid of Genius of Love from Antho’s list and swap it for the superior work of Talking Heads (from which Tom Tom Club was formed). Some of their best work was from the 70′s, but Once in a Lifetime would sneak in.

I’m not sure why you’ve got Sam Cooke in that list though – he died in the 60′s! :)

My favorite pop hit of the 1980′s is David Bowie’s Modern Love :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaFvitDHMag

Leos Carax’s Mauvais Sang forever owns the song with this scene:

Juliette Binoche looks stunning in this film.

I have a playlist for every decade from the 1950s onward. The rule I have for each is ONE track per artist/band per decade (solo tracks by former band members etc allowed), all personal faves. They are all still a work in progress, but here’s how my ‘awesome ’80s mix’ is currently shaping up:

  7. One of the more fun aspects of my job is getting to create the playlists for our floor’s holiday “parties” (aka snacks or desserts in the afternoon). Been working on one for Halloween, and I’ve been enjoying listening to it so much I thought I’d share. It’s a mixture of comedy monster songs, themes from horror movies, pop/rock songs with Halloween or monster-related lyrics (both modern and classic), and TV theme songs. And a few random ghoulish sound effects for good measure.
