Well, it’s still a year from now and Batman is in full tilt mode right at the moment; but no time like right now to look ahead to next summer’s giant super hero blockbuster and see what Zack Snyder has in store for us with his take on Superman: Man of Steel.
This trailer doesn’t give us much but we do at least get a glimpse of Kal-El in flight. But mostly it’s a tonal introduction to the movie. Sort of a small town, Americana feel to the whole thing. A blue-collar working man version of Clark Kent and his travels.
Written by David S. Goyer (Dark Knight Trilogy, Jumper, Blade trilogy), produced by Christopher Nolan and starring MICHAEL “I kick ass in everything” SHANNON AS GENERAL ZOD, we give you… Superman 6:
Rounding out the cast are:
Henry Cavill … Clark Kent / Superman
Amy Adams … Lois Lane
Russell Crowe … Jor-El
Kevin Costner … Jonathan Kent
Diane Lane … Martha Kent
Michael Shannon … General Zod
Christopher Meloni … Colonel Hardy
Laurence Fishburne … Perry White

Why the fuck do they want to make a Superman film that is grounded in reality? What an awful idea. Plus it is an origin story and Zack Snyder is directing. I have no hope for this film
Well, at least you’re keeping an open mind.
Ditto. With Snyder behind the camera I don’t think it can be that grounded in reality though
I’ve never found Superman all that interesting anyway to be honest. He’s easily the most boring superhero.
The quality of the Superman tale you have seen / read may be at fault there.
I totally agree that it’s the kind of story given to Superman. In general I don’t find him an incredibly interesting character, but then a story like All-Star Superman is absolutely incredible.
I wonder if this is all the result of Christopher Nolan being involved or just the success of the Dark Knight. Where they think it needs to be very grounded and a bit dark to be a good superhero movie. Yet that worked for Batman because it works for the character and some of the best Batman stories like Batman: Year One were very grounded in reality.
There has been Superman stories grounded in reality, like Superman: Earth One and Michael J. Straczynski’s Superman story called Grounded. I haven’t read those stories but they seem to be divisive stories, where people either love them or really dislike them.
I’m going to take a guess that there will be a similar reaction to the Man of Steel and it won’t fair any better than Superman Returns.
I think taking the All-Star Superman route would be better, not just in a movie I would enjoy more but would be more popular among the general public. However, I can understand when the script and production started in the pre-Avengers time that making it grounded in reality was the only way they thought they could have a hugely successful hit.
Well yeah it is possible to do grounded Superman The first few issues of Mark Waid & Lenil Francis Yu’s Birthright was about Clark finding himself by being a journalist in Africa before making it to the big city.
That story ends with a full on Alien Invasion though so it has both, which I am not sure it is possible to cover all that in 2-3 hours.
Grounded & Earth One are both terrible for fluctuations on the same reason.
The inherent problem with 95% of the Superman stories that do not work is the same as The Flash actually. People crafting the story do not have the imagination to craft a threat that is suitable for the characters current abilities so they must weaken him as their sole means to make him interesting. Instead of taking the characteristics of your hero into account before designing the challenges they will face.
That trailer does a pretty good job of looking un-Snyder until the sonic booms. It sets up a movie that looks interesting but then reminds who is making it and crushes all that in its hands.
I quite liked that trailer (especially the “grounded in reality” part of it).
Will be looking forward to the film next year.
I was unimpressed by the trailer when I saw it online yesterday, but must report that in a movie theatre it is a whole different experience. Gave me chills.
Now, neither I nor any of you should have any expectation that Zack Snyder can actually pull this off – it is wayyyyyy beyond his demonstrated skill set. But who knows, sometimes people spontaneously mutate into significantly more accomplished filmmakers. Wait, no: that was a dream I had one time.
We should all rewatch Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman in preparation!
I saw some writeups in some less than trustworthy forums that Nolan was unimpressed by what he saw from Snyder (can’t recall now if the report said first cut or footage and now I can’t find the source). That didn’t surprise so I wasn’t particularly optimistic about the trailer but I like both of the teasers (though we don’t see much of Cavill). I’m hoping it’ll work out.
