New Release Pick of the Week

We Need to Talk About Kevin
One of the most powerful and overwhelming films I’ve seen in a long time, and easily one of the best films of 2011. Tilda Swinton is always amazing, but this is probably her finest work yet, and Lynne Ramsay is definitely a directorial force I hope to hear much more from in the future.
2011 UK. Director: Lynne Ramsay. Starring: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller.

Catalog Pick of the Week

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers blu-ray
An above average noir film, as you might guess from Barbara Stanwyck’s presence in the cast – she makes even average things more than watchable, and that’s not even necessary here. This film is also notable, though, for being Kirk Douglas’s film debut, and though he’s supporting here, his on-screen presence instantly skyrocketed him to stardom. Cool to see stuff like this starting to hit blu-ray more and more.
1946 USA. Director: Lewis Milestone. Starring: Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott, Kirk Douglas.

Instant Watch Picks of the Week

With some slim pickings on the new Instant Watch releases this week (that will likely change in a couple days, as new additions tend to go live on the 1st), I delved ahead a little bit, and found that Instant Watcher is saying that Lost in Translation, The Killer Inside Me, and Perrier’s Bounty will be added tomorrow, May 31st. I can’t verify that, and I can’t link to the pages until tomorrow, but those are solid films (well, I haven’t seen Killer Inside Me) so hopefully it’s true!

Lost in Translation
The film that made me a Sofia Coppola fan for life, and I haven’t regretted it yet. A simply lovely film about alienation, stagnation, and feeling like an outsider, with great performances, gorgeous cinematography, and a subtle moodiness about it that makes it add up to even more than the sum of its parts.
2003 USA. Director: Sofia Coppola. Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, Giovanni Ribisi.

Expiring Picks of the Week

Edward Scissorhands
With Dark Shadows out in theatres, what better time to revisit the original Burton/Depp collaboration (still one of my favorite Burton films of all time) before it expires.

Oh my God! The American DVD art for GOON is so generically photoshopped! Well, the Canadian DVD is probably photoshopped as well, but it’s a better representation of the film.
