I’m not a Beastie Boys fan, but 47 is way too young to go. Very sorry to hear this. I was at Lolla the year they were supposed to be headlining but had to cancel because of his health. I got the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in exchange, which was good for me musically, but what a terrible way for it to have happened.
Of course on the movie related side, he also is the founder of Oscilloscope Laboratories which brought great titles to DVD like Wendy and Lucy, Dear Zachary and We Need To Talk About Kevin among many many others.
I didn’t even realize that until people were mentioning it on Twitter. Good on him for that; Oscilloscope picks up some of the very best films for release.
This one hurt a lot and made me audibly gasp and say ‘what the fuck!’ on a crowded streetcar. I think given the release changes around Hot Sauce Committee led us to believe things were going OK.

I wasn’t aware of the connection either. A terrific legacy, in the unlikely event that his other terrific legacy were somehow invalid.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the Beasties, but there were songs and music videos I enjoyed (i.e. Fight For Your Right. Sabotage, and Intergalactic)
License to Ill was indeed the first cassette tape I ever bought as well, Andrew! It survived 3 walkmans. I still have the tape at home.
